Is anyone else as satisfied as I am at the Swans last seconds win over Essendon?

I have no allegiance to either team (in fact I dislike both) but would normally favour Bombers over Swans based purely on the great service Goodard has given us in the past. That tiny effect was overruled when I realised I had tipped Sydney. I do like to pick a team when I watch a match or I lose interest rather quickly - so Sydney got the nod of who to follow in this by the smallest of margins.

The umpiring in this match was erratic and despite the 18 - 18 split of frees, seemed to ignore a number of blatant frees that I would have paid to Sydney. Many of these decisions came late in the match and they seemed to greatly aid the momentum that Essendon was building. I thought I was witnessing a manufactured win - one where the umpires had such a direct influence on the match result that I was getting angry.

Then Sydney stepped up and snatched victory from the umpires and I felt a degree of joy.

I wondered if there actually is corruption. What if bookmakers had paid the umpires a good wad of money to direct the match like they did. How would we even know? How would the AFL know?

I don't think anyone can rule it out - the corruption part. They are amateurs officiating a supposed professional competition. Until the officials are part of that professional standard the query of corruption will always remain. Especially as they continually defend bad calls that blind Freddy can see are just plain wrong. Bringing them into the professional fold will go a long way in the public eye of them being seen to do the right thing - especially if they are shown to admit to bad calls and are trying for continuous improvement. At the moment it's just 'that's the right call, move on' and frankly, is sheer arrogance and irresponsible.

Its plenty of money. But a lot of them are highly paid Lawyers etc and umpiring is their little hobby on the side.
a) Lawyers love to be able to put their own little spin on interpretation of rules.
b) They will never get enough to quit their day job.

I'm not sure that its the full time or part time status that is the issue though.
I've got no confidence that they are governed by a body that actively reviews their games and seeks to stamp out poor trends and tendencies.

I do have more confidence that some of the newer umpires coming through, such as retired AFL players are a better demographic.
( No doubt some legal professional will be able to come here and put enough spin on things to convince everyone i'm totally wrong ).

We had 2 myki's, use of the past tense is intentional as despite using both within the past month and a half, both are now listed as expired, and for the pleasure of now owning expired cards I get charged a $6fee to get a new one + the top up and who gives a toss about the $15 that was one one card and $12 on the other, that's now in the ether because the cards got killed.

And they wonder why people fare evade with this bullshit system.

My family of 5 at one time would use the train occasionally on weekends. Very occasionally. Two of the kids needed a Myki for school busses , so that $12 is gone. Do i pay an extra $18 on top of the cost? In reality we simply no longer use public transport. One of the kids had a defective card it had cash on it but wouldn't read. We had to fight for 6 months to get the cash back.

I often use rail transport if i travel overseas.
I've been on the trains in Singapore , London, and Hong Kong. All of them are vastly superior to the Myki crap which apparently had to be designed from scratch because you couldn't buy an automatic ticketing system.

The system i saw in Singapore in the early 1990's consisted of a small plastic card ( more robust than a Myki ). You paid to put money on it including a deposit, it deducted the fare at the turnstile. It told you if you had used enough to cut into the deposit. You then paid money to put more credit on it or gave them back the card and they gave you the remains of the deposit in total.

If someone tells me they are coming to Victoria as a tourist i tell them to go anywhere else first unless they have way more money than they need.

So.....

Yes .... screw the myki system.
( i can't see how its even legal to expire the card and keep the credit ).

In my experience school principals are the worst umpires. They make Lawyers look warm and fuzzy.

But say you start a male. Then you change into a female.

You can't really play aflw because it's basically unfair, you have greater physical scope etc.
