I was 9 years old when we won the flag, and turned 10 the following week. Was there at the G on the great day with my Dad....sadly no longer with us.

I turn 59 next week funnily enough. I will turn 60 a week after we celebrate the 50th anniversary of our flag. There's some Maths for you!

If you had told me then no more flags until at least after I had turned 60.....'well i wouldn't have believed you'!

I shake my head thinking about it. We should have AT LEAST 3 flags i reckon.

Now to debate which 3!

How exactly did that finals system work? Why did Fitzroy get a second chance to win?

Back then the minor premier had the right to challenge for the premiership once the finals were done. The old timey "double chance" if you will.

I stand corrected, but it was something like this. As Minor Premiers they had the right to 'challenge' us after the Preliminary final. Which we won. If they had won that would have been it. So in effect we had to win two grand finals to win the 'Major Premiership'.

I remember a poll on SS about 2003 asking how many Premierships we would win by 2010. I put 3. We had just done all that recruiting and drafting. Things looked bright!

The most important month of the year is almost upon us.

We've been discussing hypotheticals, rumours and desirable trades for the best part of 12 months.

We've had reliable contributors BrianSpeaking, stavro#4 and Moorabbin Ghost providing us with an insight which has fuelled a barrage of posts during times of drought.

Unfortunately for me, I booked a trip to Oktoberfest and Europe during what could be a hugely defining period for the club in its next tilt. I will no longer be able to follow the thread with the same vigour and addiction that I have over past year.

Here's hoping by the time I get back to Australia, we've landed Carlisle and Freeman for peanuts, kept Pick 5 and set ourselves up for a massive assault in 2016.

In Bains and Trout, we trust.

Unfortunately for me...hahaha I'm sure being served mountainous steins of froths by voluptuous Bavarian beauties will make up for missing the action here.

Try to fit a bit of culture whilst you're there, (assuming you're <34) . Try Neuschwanstein, Berchesgarden, and I think Dachau, (very sobering but worth it)

97, 05 & 09
97 we got out coached on GF day. A blind robbers dog saw what Jarman did the week before.
05 we were at our scoring best, just a couple too many injuries. To think a guy who'd later become a club legend, killed us in the last qtr of that prelim.
09 we were clearly the best team but fluffed our lines in front of goal early. We should have been 5-6 goals up at half time.

Interesting to note that 3/4 time in 71 we were a few goals up on a team with as many flags as us and the Dogs. What a sliding door moment that next 30 mins was. Further hurt by the fact their best player ever (Matthews) would have been zoned to us if he lived on the other side of the road and one of the coaches that bore them such fruit in the 80s was our messiah.

My memory of the 1991 was that gblett and Geelong got an armchair ride by the umps in that final at article park, we didn't lose by much, and should have won

I don't know how it is possible that 1 club can have such bad luck
