Australia Day. Say it out loud and let it sink it.

It is one day, just one day, that celebrates that I'm Australian, you're Australian, they're Australian and it's a bloody great country to be in.

Are they not Australian? Is the colour of their skin more important to them than celebrating that we're all Australian, we all love the joint and we're, most of us anyway, proud to be here.

So yes, I will be meanspirited to ones who claim this as invasion day, because to me, that means they are stating they do not wish to be Australians, they wish instead to be identified as indigenous and an exclusive Australia that only involves them and not us immigrants or sons of immigrants.
Agree how great this country is but is there not a date that wouldn't be so jarring to our indigenous brothers and sisters.
It is not up to you or I to tell them how they should feel.

WHAT!!!
My Grandfather died for that Anthem*
I love our song. And that almost mythical 2nd verse that 97% of the nation has never heard is my favourite part:D

* ok, Grandad may not have really died for that flag or anthem.
He actually drowned in a vat of beer while working at C.U.B in a work place accident.
Embarrassingly there was video surveillance footage of him climbing out for a pee 3 times then jumping back in:oops::oops::p

There isn't another verse is there? Back in the 1980s they used to play God Save the Queen at school assembly. This shit isn't too bad in comparison.

This piece on why #AustraliaDay is a day of mourning for Indigenous people is a must-read

Nic Naitanui added .... What an intriguing piece. Do yourself a favour and have a read. So much insight

I think it's disingenuous calling it "invasion day" as its an attempt to undermine the origin of settler Australians, many of whose ancestors did not choose to come here either.

That said, this date specifically does represent a massive change for indigenous people that resulted in considerable bloodshed and tragedy occurring to them and is meanwhile a date that represents the founding of Sydney, not this national as a whole.

Frankly I say bring on the republic day where we can celebrate an actual day for all of Australia and its peoples.

I'm sick of having Australia Day lessened by the minority left groups and living in the past aboriginals . If you do t want to celebrate Australia Day then don't . Go back out to the bush you apparently love so much just the way it as back in 1788 and leave us to get on with things . We don't make a fuss on sorry day even though most of us never did anything g against the indigenous . I grew up In Kalgoorlie w.a . So before anyone hammers me or anything I have gone to school and lived with these people and this is what my opinions are based on .

Right or wrong some of these people see it as a day their people and culture began to be systematically destroyed and killed by foreign people. Something that didnt stop occurring under jurisdiction of law until 50 years ago and continues to live on in day to day culture.

I dont agree with Australia day being necessarily as terrible as some people make it out to be and I still think we should celebrate a more inclusive holiday but I damn well have the empathy to understand WHY some people are pissed off about it. For someone who supposedly grew up amongst indegenous people you sure dont seem to be willing to see any other point of view.

I'm not saying how they should feel, moments in history hold different emotions and responses to each of us, what I'm saying is that invasion day is insulting and demeaning to pretty much everyone that came after 1788. Day of mourning is fine for instance, it's the same day, the people calling it that merely aren't also being insulting in the process.

Oh well be insulted and demeaned if you must. Invasion Day it is
Aborigines felt insulted demeaned, shot, posioned ; dispossed and stolen.

Bit different to some invaders feelings being hurt

They weren't exactly nice to each other before that day though either.
They still aren't.

I'm quite happy and proud about the country that has evolved in Australia.

What are yous suggesting. Some altruistic Englishman should have convinced his colleagues to leave the country for the indigenous?
Play the sliding doors game and tell me what you think would have happened.

Would you be pissed off if another country came to Australia and took everything then celebrated it??

What do you expect.
Do what Peter Garrett the great politician suggested and "give it back"?
Say that happened.
How long would it stay given back.

People can sook all they wan't but lots worse has happened in this part of the world and if it was an invasion, well they could have been invaded much worse and more often.

I expect people not be ignorant w***ers and say things like 'go back to the bush' & 'it could've been worse'. I honestly cannot fathom that people actually have this attitude towards the situation. It's ****ing embarrassing.

Good for you. Glad you are happy

I am suggesting the country was invaded and the indigeneous inhabitants were shot, poisoned, dispossessed, and stolen.

Aborginal soldiers fought and dies for the country and weren't even recognised as citizens until 1967.

But they get special treatment don't they?

Wow- you are right across this.

They are sooks and they should be grateful that the whites that came and shot and poisoned them and dispossessed them were good for them in comparison to some other unknown invader.

Straya F@@k Yeah!!!!!

I don't know if anyone saw this on FB recently. Pretty sad......

It might make a few realise why it pisses off the Indigenous Aussies.

When they say invasion , it's not like they took over anything that was of note . Was there buildings, industry, trade or commerce . No there was nothing and over time a nation was created . They were here first but walking around getting nothing done is not progress.
Thanks for coming England I like what you've done with the place

But who says we wanted all that crap?

Our people were very happy to be left alone no matter how worse of we were, gotta remember there was no sickness, no cancer when it was just us, everything was natural.

I always hear about this "closing of the gap" crap, what is being done about it by our high & mighty government? Nothing..

So I would say we would have been better of if they stayed in England.

Agree to disagree, that's enough on the subject IMO.

I'm estimated to live until I'm 65 because I'm Aboriginal, do you know how much that ****ing sucks?

There always has been cancer
I agree with your point of view, just want to point out that you that while a lot of diseases were brought in by Europeans, in general cancers (except cancer of cervix due to HPV) are just unavoidable occurrences within a population.
