So, qualifying statement; I'm a country guy at heart which is why I wouldn't choose to live in Melbourne, I prefer open spaces to concrete jungles filled with thousands of people in a hurry, still a brilliant city otherwise as the undesirables are just a small percentage of that, since any major metropolitan city will have such elements, let alone a multicultural one. And even in my own world, we've been robbed, friends have been stabbed, for some reason we have a gun store right next to a bank, and someone tried breaking into my window and was met with an axe to the face because you shall not pass or you will be made to earn it.

But I mean hey, we're not in France and needing to enforce martial law any time soon yeah? Must be doing something right?

As someone who travels from the NW to the SE (Sunbury to Box Hill for those who want to Google) E-W lessens traffic because people in my situation would not need to drive through a section of Melbourne, effectively linking major road to major road instead of say, going past the zoo or down Mt Alexander road to go past the zoo. There'd still be off ramps to spit into the city on approach, but the idea works in concept since you direct the flow of traffic to intended destination when you need to bypass a major population centre.

They did it on the Hume, so instead of having to down to Riddell, Lancefield, Kilmore, Seymour and etc to get to Nagambie, I can instead spit out onto the Hume and bypass all these towns, or driving to see the sister in Wagga, I can also drive down the Hume until just beyond the border.

Currently, we drove that a few weeks ago, took 1 hour 40 odd to get to Violet Town (170odd km's).
My current drive to work is 1hr 10ish and that's 1/3 the distance (60ish km's)

The issue was that in order to do this you effectively screwed over quite a few people (ie; the crowd who moved near Essendon airport then complained about the noise, only no airport and instead "hi, we need to demo your house for a road") and it wouldn't really solve much because it'd only direct a bit of traffic, and it was signed and sealed when it should not have been, and it woulda been paid by us the taxpayer.

Libs also changed zoning permits let's not forget, so Guy as current OP leader is laughable since he oversaw quite a few illegal and dangerous building construction as planning minister.

But yeah, rocket science locally at least as seat with originally Liberal, population went from 8k to 20 odd k, land got sold, buildings closed, 2 lanes into town. Libs got told to piss off, Labor got in, 4 lanes into town, 4 lanes out of town, electrified rail and oh hey presto infrastructure improvements and now we have less people starting fires in woodland areas because they be bored.

The guy 'mouse' who was killed by the young man a year or so ago near the Yarra was offered accomodation. a few years ago my daughter volunteered to feed the homeless into the early hours of the morning and would tell us that for some homeless it was their choice. You can only access accomodation if you were clean. Sadly some people couldn't walk away from the drugs

Politics can be so divisive. We (humans) seem to hold onto our political leaning as avidly as we support our favourite sporting club.
I have read that there is a tendency for the vast majority of people to fall into one of two general psychological categories (conservative or liberal).

Oddly, here in Australia the conservative party call themselves "Liberal Party of Australia" and the more liberal party is known as "The Australian Labor Party". The Liberal Party have formed a coalition with the Country Party which is now known as the National Party.

Both parties believe in the basic freedoms we take for granted, freedoms of thought, association, speech and religion.

The Liberals believe in minimising government to reduce taxes and prevent "red tape".
They believe that businesses and individuals create wealth and opportunity.
They tend to make ideological decisions not based on evidence.

The Labor Party tries to ensure a fairer distribution of the wealth. It believes in providing strong safety nets for all members of our society in order to reduce poverty and increase opportunity for all. It utilises a large government infrastructure to provide these services. The so-called "red tape" is often to prevent the powerful from exploiting the people or the resources we share.

I believe that we need both parties to hold power in alternation. Labor brings innovation and provides infrastructure that really does good for the people of Australia and even other parts of the world. The Liberals cut government costs by reducing staff and services, forcing government to become more economical.

One thing that confuses me is that historically, the National debt (as a percentage of GDP) always increases while under Liberal government and remains quite steady under a Labor government and yet the Liberals try to present themselves as better economic managers.

If left unchecked, the Liberal government will create a super rich elite, a smaller middle class, and genuine poverty with little concern for shared natural resources. Privatisation of traditional government services will end up making them cost more so fewer can use them. The poor subsidise the wealthy. The unchecked Labor government will create a much larger middle class, less poverty and less extreme wealth. Spending on government infrastructure and services will require higher taxes. Private innovation is not as high a priority. Restrictions are put in place so that the unscrupulous don't cheat. The wealthy subsidise the poor.

You are still missing the point - the police are amazing and are doing the best job they can even with their hands tied behind their back. Melbourne is a great place to live and I've lived in 3 other countries in Asia and UK/Europe as well as travelled to 40 other countries so I've seen quite a bit of the world. However not all is well here - I particularly noticed the change when I came back from overseas in 2010. I dont like the nanny state and the over political correctness and especially the fact that our bail/remand laws are too lax amongst other things. Oh no we can't do this as 6 people over there might be offended. Well I'm offended that you're offended!!!

If it isnt the Govt's fault whose is it? You are probably one of those socialist leftie greenie types - well good luck to you then because all is not well. How about the lack of infrastructure for the last 30 years which has resulted in traffic jams that have added at least 15 minutes to peoples' journeys in the last 15 years? How about Daniel Andrews paying $1billion to get out of a project that eventually we will have to build anyway to cope with the increase in population? Just to be clear I'm pointing the finger at both sides over the last 25 years. The last decent premier we've had is Kennett and the last decent prime minister we've had was Hawke/Keating.

Oh but the statistics say everything is trending down so it must be the case....

Did I feel guilty walking past the train station entrance up where st kilda road meets the city, (it's on the left....never good with names, just remember where stuff is) and some homeless dude drops his pipe because he is falling asleep whacked as....in front of the coppers, who didn't see it I don't think?....no I ****ing did not feel guilty.

The desal was a money tree, i worked there for 6 months and made 3 x the annual avg wage for doing absolutely nothing.

Projects need to be managed better and independently.
