What exactly did Stringer get away with?
Breaking a restraining order & organising dates/shags with girls in year 11 (last year) that were doing an AFLW skills coaching with some Bulldogs boys

Do not want that campaigner anywhere near our club

The guy is a tool. Not condoning what he did. However, I'm not a pitchfork kind of guy.

He did nothing illegal... just stupid.

There are plenty of other rumours that are illegal.

My first Saints scarf is in the post, and I will wear it this winter. We get proper winters here, unlike you guys :p

Conversely your summers are very mild, and filled with rain most times. Small sample time of 4 weeks though. :p

Would still take it, as 40+ is shit.

That's because the Earth's orbit isn't circular.

During northern winter the Earth is actually further away from the sun than when it's our winter.

The orbit is off centre.

All orbits are elliptical but its the Earth's tilt that determines the seasons. European winter is colder because its much closer to the poles. Melbourne is on a similar latitude as Greece, hence a similar summer climate but is exposed to Antartic winds considerably more hence the windy cold winters that even Germans sometimes complain about.

My understanding was that the north pole is further from the sun during their winter whereas the south pole is closer during ours.

It's the land, the northern hemisphere has a greater land mass, the Southern Hemisphere has significantly more ocean and much less land. Water heats up and cools down more slowly than land.

That's why the Southern Hemisphere is milder than the same latitudes in the north.

The Antarctic is the exception it's colder than the artic.

I think we are discussing different things.

There is as a doco on the ABC a while back.

If you look at it from a horizontal view with the sun being in the middle, then when the north pole is tilted away from the sun (winter) it is actually a longer distance away from the sun.

The opposite occurs with the south pole.

Hence northern winters are colder. Then you have all the other factors that you mentioned.

What confuses me is that on that logic, northern summers should be warmer.

I now have a headache. :)

Hmm, I originally thought this too. Wikipedia to the rescue:

Compared to axial tilt, other factors contribute little to seasonal temperature changes. The seasons are not the result of the variation in Earth's distance to the sun because of its elliptical orbit.[5] In fact, Earth reaches perihelion (the point in its orbit closest to the Sun) in January, and it reaches aphelion (farthest point from the Sun) in July, so the slight contribution of orbital eccentricity opposes the temperature trends of the seasons in the northern hemisphere.[6] In general, the effect of orbital eccentricity on Earth's seasons is a 7% variation in sunlight received.

Orbital eccentricity can influence temperatures, but on Earth, this effect is small and is more than counteracted by other factors; research shows that the Earth as a whole is actually slightly warmer when fartherfrom the sun. This is because the northern hemisphere has more land than the southern, and land warms more readily than sea.[6] Any noticeable intensification of the southern hemisphere's winters and summers due to Earth's elliptical orbit is mitigated by the abundance of water in the southern hemisphere.[7]

Check out the alternatives to the mercator projection too. The Mercator map has all the countries projected on to an orb so lots of the countries sizes are completely out of whack. Especially ones furthest from the equator. Greenland is bigger than Africa on a globe but Africa is actually much bigger.

Obligatory:

Peters FTW

Anything over 25 degrees here is considered a heatwave. Over 40 would mean instant death and the end of civilisation.

My personal fav was the cab counting in miles to destination and immediately thinking "oh shit, I can't do mental maths after 23 hours. I'M SO F...."

So the refreshing 20 odd degrees was fine if unexpected.

Yeah it's a pretty interesting subject but on a basic level it's the difference in land mass.

I cheat, my eldest did a minor in atmospheric science at Monash so I just ask him.

Yes its facsinating, there are some good sites that show you the size of the various countries as you change latitudes.

Just a bit of a gripe from Snake this morning.
In regards to that oxygen thief Sebastion Kennett who was arrested last night after the hit n run in a stolen car that killed an innocent woman.
I hate how today's paper has called him a "hoon". It's a stupid word that just trivializes people's actions.
He isn't a " hoon" he is a car thief and a murderer.

He's a disgrace but don't think he's a murderer, just an irresponsible stupid selfish campaigner that ruined plenty of lives including his own.

Gotta disagree mate.
You steal a car and speed in it then crash into somebody and they die.
That's murder everyday of the week to me.
It wasn't a acidental car crash on the way home from the shops.

Not for me to interpret Australian law, but I'm assuming it would only be murder if pre-meditated, and a manslaughter charge is the most that could be applied?

Yeah I wasnt talking about how the courts will judge him.
He will probably get slapped with a wet lettuce leaf .
IMO opinion he is a murderer no matter how he is officially charged.
But we are all entitled to our different opinions on here:thumbsu:
