....I am happy and willing to share my country and all it offers with anyone who comes here with an attitude like CursingFijian ....prepared to adopt our way of life and be happy to be here.

..not like some who only want to cause trouble. I do not offer a welcome to those people at all, imo they can bugger off back to where they come from.

We have enough troublemakers of our own without any more who arrive and bring their hate-filled, criminal way of life with them.

If you call welcoming someone who has graced our shore with his presence and has a cheerful, happy to be here attitude, patronising, then it's you who has the problem mate, not me.
how is it your country though ?? what because you were born here somehow you are more important then someone not born here ?
and what constitutes a trouble maker ? in the 60's those protesting conscription were seen as trouble makers .. if you ask Pauline Hanson a lady in a burka is a troublemaker ...
this is the main issue i have with the so called patriots .. who the hell gives them the right to say what is welcome and what isnt welcome ? the whole thing of if you want to be an immigrant you gotta be cheerful and eternally grateful for being allowed in gives me the shits... Australia has a set of laws that everyone has to follow as long as you follow those laws you can be a grumpy bastard all you like ...

macMum is quintessential boomer. its like the best of hits are coming out. surprised there hasnt been a "**** off were full" or "fit in or **** off" post yet

...and because he is, I say welcome to this country.............and yet you call it patronising. Ok.

....and who said anything about the white australia policy? I didn't.

here's the thing, as soon as theyre an australian citizen you have no right to say if they should be here or not. they're entitled the exact same rights as you are. you're not some special case/have more power

Who the hell gives protesters the rights to want to stop Whaling?
Who the hell gives protesters the rights to want no nuclear energy?
Who the hell gives protesters the rights to want the refugee's removed from detention camps?
Who the hell gives anyone the rights to want gay marriage recognised?

:D

If you and I are born here....it is our country. We are Australians. Fact. If we were born in America, we would be classed as American and that would our country. Fact.

If someone was born somewhere else in the world, they are not Australian, therefor it is not their country.....until they move here to live/work and make a life for themselves and family ..

All this because I welcomed CursingFijian to my country. Yes, my country......Fiji was previously his country, if I went there and he welcomed me to his country, I wouldn't think he was being patronising, I'd think he was being friendly, as most people would......except those with a chip on their shoulder.

..not sure what your problem and attitude is all about, but it is very off-putting tbh.....you really seem like you want to argue about something for the sake of arguing. Making a mountain out of a molehill.

....anyhoo, I really don't care what you think..

...as long as CursingFijian wasn't offended or think I was being patronising.

I'm starting to think it's best if I stay off your board, I seem to aggravate a few here:(

All the best for 2018....will be watching/cheering loudly for the Saints. Cheers

Lol.

We decide who comes here and how they come?

Maybe we should bring back the white Australia policy?

Migrants built this country.

I call him a good, hard working person.
Doesn't any country with an immigration system decide who and how many?.

My wife was born in Qatar. Her parents were living there when she was born during to her dad's work. She and her family are as French as the croissant and have no links to Qatari history or culture save for the four years they spent there.

Being born somewhere doesn't allow us to be the gatekeeper, surely. But maybe I'm being disingenuous. I know what you (Macmum) meant.

Everyone dissing Macmum's notion of citizenship is theoretically right, but if you follow that theory to the end, you remove all borders and allow anyone to drive the place you live in in any direction they like without defending your territory, which would be a brave new world for humanity. We are close to that now, but there will probably always be resistance or backlash and the ugliest face of that is nationalism.

Our current immigration intake is a government run Ponzi scheme designed to stimulate some economic growth.

Victoria and NSW take the majority and believe me plenty of people are noticing the pressure on the states infrastructure.

Many people on both sides of politics agree it is unsustainable at present levels and would like to see immigration levels returned to a more sustainable level.

Gee macmum is getting a belting for a rather innocuous comment that cruising liked.

Many think that blocs like the EU are on the way out and nation states are the future.

I read a good article by Paul Keating on this recently, who knows its just another opinion piece.

Of course migrants built this country or are you suggesting that the Anglos hadn't done much with the place until the Italians arrived ;).

A few years ago i was speaking to a guy who had immigrated with his wife from Iran.
He was kind of despondent because the Australian government had indicated that their skills were needed in Australia.

His wife was qualified in a specialist field in the Automotive Industry. :/ She could not get work at the time, now there is not even a chance.

This is bad for the Country and its bad for the immigrants who are the victim of poor execution of policy.
This guy didn't want to come here and have his wife unemployed or working in a supermarket. His credentials , while high are also something that may limit his prospects in Australia.

There is a good chance they could have immigrated to a number of other countries and lived comfortably in the upper middle class.
As it is , they will struggle.
If they are disgruntled, I don't blame them.

How much of this goes on?

Our Government seem to think that the trained people create the jobs, but we need the industries.

back the train up i dont have a problem with what macMum said initially to CF .. i do have a problem with the follow up comment saying "

Yep once your in that's it, no if's ands or maybes.

My youngest son has friends from all over the place, he thinks it's strange if I even ask out of interest where they are from.

That's the future or will be so long as we keep the country running, hard times have a way of bringing out the very best and the very worst in people.

it reminds me a bit like that lamb ad from years ago where the mum ask the girl asian do they cook lamb like this where you are from and she replys "from Ballarat"....

a couple years ago i went for a job interview with a company when part way through the interview the guy interviewing me commented how good my english was .... i responded "i would bloody well hope so as ite the only language i speak" ...
there is no cookie cutter aussie ... we come in all shapes and sizes in all kinds of colours and religious beliefs ... some people just find it hard to grasp that

You don't like macmum bitching about immigrants.
She doesn't like immigrants bitching about aspects of australia.

You're happy for people to bitch about stuff as long as its stuff you agree with.

The same thing that gives you the right to disagree with them. We are a free country. Same thing that allows churches to demand that people live by their laws even if no one else wants to live by them any more.

Nuclear energy by the way is more expensive, dangerous and leaves spent fuel that ends to be stored for huge amounts of time. It's terrible, I was in Japan when they had the Fukushima disaster. That is a long term problem for the whole world because Japan wanted a stable energy source.
