You've said it multiple times.
You are wrong.

Say it a million times you will still be wrong. You are worse than wrong. You are a wrong smart-arse.
And... You are allowed to use cars without pedals and steering wheel in Texas.
-------------------------
As of 28 August 2014, according to Computer World Google's self-driving cars were in fact unable to use about 99% of US roads. As of the same date, the latest prototype had not been tested in heavy rain or snow due to safety concerns. Because the cars rely primarily on pre-programmed route data, they do not obey temporary traffic lights and, in some situations, revert to a slower "extra cautious" mode in complex unmapped intersections. The vehicle has difficulty identifying when objects, such as trash and light debris, are harmless, causing the vehicle to veer unnecessarily. Additionally, the lidar technology cannot spot some potholes or discern when humans, such as a police officer, are signaling the car to stop. Google projects plan on having these issues fixed by 2020
----------------------

I don't have any more recent information on the issues as of now.
LMAO. Uses data from 3.5 years ago. Says data is still accurate and relevant. Good one. Maybe you could at least try finding something from this year? How about Elon Musk' speech talking about how his cars are capable of driving on a road without a driver? That was this year for reference, I know that must be hard to comprehend though.

Elon Musk is literally in the business to sell cars, of course he is going to say that.

Anybody enjoy watching Black Mirror on Netflix here? Some interesting takes on futurism in that.

Driverless vehicles are coming. There is a generation of kids who can't wait for that technology to come on, warts and all. The really interesting thing is to predict how it will affect social attitudes. Will future generations be less inclined to actually own cars? Will parking meters and wardens become a thing of the past? Does drink driving morph into something else?

Of all the futurist thinking, I think driverless cars is almost universally acknoweldged as a reality. Some are obviously more skeptical than others. What about AI and medicine? Predictions are that machines will be so good at assessing our health that by 2050 households will own machines that check-up on our health daily and provide feedback.

I think I will be ready to move on if I ever have to walk into a room and talk to the walls as part of an employment interview or performance review. God help the first machine that fires me.

Uhhhm I actually think automated cars is just lateral thinking for Elon Musk. It might be the segment of his business that is most connected with the populace though.

Doesn't he have rockets that can launch and land themselves? I think I read somewhere that he sees space travel as a multi trillion dollar industry and is preparing his technologies to deliver that. I think he has got one eye on real estate on the moon. Serious.

Elron Musk is a blowhard. Ford and GM and nearly every other established car manufacturer are far further advanced than Tesla. GM is predicted by many to be the first to market.
Tesla are still learning how to make mass produced vehicles and have plenty of problems doing that.

Electric motors don’t wear like internal combustion and don’t need brakes. The future is bleak. I will have to spend time with my Missus if I don’t have my business.
this is true but the tolarances are a lot finer so where historically you could get 20000 hrs out of a transmission before you would overhaul it to maintain the sensitivity of the sensors and the ensure the readings are spot on the maintenance procedures will need to be kept tighter a human opperator can live with a clunky transmission and push it to almost death with automatic driven trucks the computer doesnt like it when there is any kind of fault.. also the other down side at the moment is the sensors need to be calibrated regularly im sure both these items can be fixed but as a business i dont think anyone is in too much of a hurry to do themselves out of work to maintain the equipment

funny how when people dont understand something or are scared of what the advancement will bring they revert to petty name calling and personal attacks on the driving force behind them... worth noting Eddison had a similar issue with people attacking him because his discoveries were scary... Michael Faraday was discredited by his peers for his upbringing when his ideas were leaving them behind.. even Newton was called a satanist when he released his discoveries ... the modern day we have people doing the same to Elon Musk...
obviously GM and Ford are sceptical of Telsa its not in their interest to embrace a competitors ideas

Ford purchased the biggest manufacturer of laser radar. It wasn't cheap. They didn't do it because they were sceptical of Tesla and their optical systems. Many independent observers have also expressed doubt that Tesla can devise a workable system without similar technology.
But hell , must mean i don't understand it.

Michael Faraday was a scientist.
Elron Musk has similar scientific credentials to myself, but he's an entrepreneur.

He must have made more money from selling the least number of cars than anyone ever.

I think they have done one or two landings yes but this is a far far far cry from any sort of travel industry.

Truth is we will never have a real space based travel "agency" as long as we use chemical rockets in the same fashion. They are INCREDIBLY dangerous to use, require immense amount of land to be launched from (so in other words, inconvenient location) and are incredibly expensive.

That isnt to say that someone wont come along and invent a rocket engine thats considerably different and make it work but at the moment its all just marketing wank and thats the issue I have with Musk, a lot of his projects have validity but some are just bullshit that people lap up due to the image.

A fair bit of twattage happening in here.

And I thought I was good at doing this.

Frankly I do not care if Musk is 90% marketing and 10% science.

Entrepreneurs make things happen. They are the ones with the vision, capital and the ideas.

There's a lot of broke scientists and inventors out there.

With the Musks of this world, nothing advances. People like him are the conduits between idea and implementation.

One thing Australia lacks is people like Musk.

People should look up the definition of inventor and entrepreneur... And then distinguish between the two.

The reason his ideas get lapped up is that they inspire... No different to JFK aspiring to put man on the moon.

Of course a lot of ideas don't come to fruition. But unless you push the envelope, you don't advance.

As far as the hype goes... It's constant publicity that attracts the brains and money to get this done.

Typical Aussie attitude. As soon as someone comes along and gets successful, we have to cut them down.

Yeah that was the premise behind that doco "who killed the electric car" they said Ford or GM or who ever it was realised that making cars gets you a few thousand dollars but the servicing and parts will make you many times that over the life of the car. Electric motors don't need transmissions and brakes and oil and filters and plugs and on and on. You wonder how they make enough out of the cars if that's the case. Musk seems to have decided removing workers from the manufacturing process makes it cheaper in the first place.

Yeah. I love his enthusiasm for futurism. I'm obviously a grumpy old man and just see some dystopian nightmare at every new invention but I have to say Musk definitely puts his money where his mouth is, he's different to most modern entrepreneurs who just skim money off everything that already exists. He genuinely goes out an innovates for better or worse. Even when he just streamlines existing products he's still improving and upgrading. Apple started the same way, they didn't invent computing but they made it more user friendly and accessible.

Someone already started making them cheaper. We were late to the party so Turnbull has decided that as about the only first world nation with no space program, he might start investing in it too late.

So your starting argument was that automation and driverless cars won't happen or atleast isn't going to happen in the foreseeable future.

But in your effort to discredit tesla you've provided evidence of a major car manufacturer purchasing technology that will increase the automation in their cars.

Why would a company invest so much in doing that if it's as you claimed not going to happen or won't happen for a long time because the technology isn't good enough? Are you suggesting Ford are investing millions in technology that won't help it?

Mate you're going around in circles. It's not about the topic. It's argumenting for the sake of wanting to be right rather than the topic it's self.

Spot on. When you distil it right down be it a scientist or what ever someone has to have the balls to implement the change.

Takes a lot of time and effort and in most cases a lot of capital.

Need more people like him. I fear we are falling away in that regard here

The car companies don't make the money for the servicing etc, that's the dealer.
They do have massive markups on spare parts though, and absolutely love the drive for "genuine parts" in insurance claims.
I think Australian car parts in Australian cars ( RIP ) are typically around 800 to 1000% markup at the retailer ( 10% off for trade ) .
Some of the imports seem to add an additional middle man profit and end up with 4000%.

In Tesla's case it makes sense for him to Automate as much as possible. The Automation simply gets added in to all the other investment that will eventually be considered a setup cost.
At some point when their operation becomes profitable , its harder to justify the capital cost of increasing automation.

I said it was still a long way off.
I suggested that Freeway trucks would be amongst the first to use such technology, way before you lot get to use it to get your trip home from the pub.

I now suggest that the Taxi's in Singapore will be beautiful clean things that run without a hitch, while the ones in Melbourne are covered in graffiti, there's something sticky on the seat and OMG why has it taken me to Sunshine and stopped.

Turnbull has quickly produced the plans.
