When the Saints got Betfair sponsorship, they had a free Saints top if you placed a bet with 2:1 or better to the value of $50.
It was 09 or 10 and we had Essendon. I figured they had the wood over us even though we were good at the time, and put a bet on the Bummers at 2 to 1.
Won 50 and got the Saints top. Never made another bet since.

Yeah the thing I don't like about the saturation is all the kids watching.
Yes a lot of people say " they aren't forcing you to gamble". And this is true as most sensible adults can think for themselves.
But this is gonna be our first generation of kids who grow up with gambling adds shoved down their throats constantly. They will grow up thinking it's the norm to bet on everything and anything at any time you want via your mobile phone.
That worries me as a parent of young kids.

i think the worst part is when you get a "trusted" individual like Nathan Brown come on spruiking the bets you can make ... fair enough companys putting their odds up as a referance but when you have an "expert" talking up the value of placing so and so bet and saying things like "the smart monney is on..." this is moving away from advertising and informing of odds and into a whole other rhelm of manipulating ... i recently heard a betting agency advert telling me to the effect of "you have the team colours you know the team song now chuck your support behind your team with blah blah blah sports bet and blah blah blah money back blah blah" pushing this idea that you are supporting your team by putting a bet on for them... im sorry but for kids especially thats setting up a very negative mindset

Great for their maths. Be a parent and tell him gambling can be a waste of money or if sensible a bit of fun.

how is it great for their maths ?? in the old days when odds were displayed 5/1 or 11/1 then yeah math comes into it but now days the betting agencys realise that they need to dumb it down to make it easier so they put it as a dollar value... again a manipulation to make it easier to part with your hard earned ... as an adult its your choice to bet but i wouldnt call it "a bit of fun" and if sensible is a loose comment what determines sensible ? by all means allow betting but it shouldnt be advertised the way it is

Well I don't watch any ad so I don't care what they advertise but if they listen to you then it shouldn't be a problem. I gamble weekly and my daughter may never have had a bet in her life. She still knows what the odds are or who is favourite. Hasn't helped her maths to much though but I still think it can be good for their maths.

the thing is the adverts are not just in the ad's ... you watch the footy show and they are advertising having a bet , you watch the pre-game show they talk about having a bet... they do live crosses to the bookies for the last minute bets... you litterally cannot avoid it

They definitely should not be encouraging the kids to gamble. As if they dont have enough bad examples in front of them. Thankfully the tobacco adds have stopped. It is time the government stepped in and took control of the gaming adds.

Not sure how old you are but it is important because my mates are of a similar age and our kids have grown up with the increased advertising but strangely those kids who bet general come from a betting family and those who don't come from a non betting family. The ads seem to have no effect on who does and doesn't bet. The same with the young guys at the footy club I'm involved in. The ads are the problem IMO. When I was young the only way to be was at the races or at a TAB. Now you can bet on the internet so you could be about 10 years old if you wanted to. Also most TAB are at pubs and from what I see the more you drink the more you bet. Also there are apps that again can be set up by a 10 year old. The ads aren't the problem. Its clearly the ease on how you can bet. Having said that I don't see in my circle any evidence that there is anymore people with problem gambling than before the ads.

Sorry I didn't realise betting a few dollars can kill you. And it isn't luck to not know people who are dangerous gamblers because 95% aren't. I would suggest its very common.

thats like saying a little bit of Meth is just a bit of fun but if you push it too far its dangerous .... you say 95% are not dangerous gamblers but what is considered dangerous gamblers.. the University of Sydney report into gambling in 2009 reported that about 160k australian's suffered from significant problems from gambling while thats less then 1% of the adult population of australia when you factor that a large percentage dont gamble and of those that do an equally large percentage with problems never report the fact that they have problems its a pretty significant issue . 2010 stats show Australians spend over $18 billion per annum on gambling or $1500 percapita. This amount
is considerably higher compared to other countries such as New Zealand ($495per capita), Canada ($393per
capita) and U.S.A ($325 per capita)..
as you say most people can have a punt and not get into trouble from that but the question worth asking is who the advertising for gambling is targeted to.. given the tone and the language used in the adverts and the message they are pushing the adverts are geared to the lower iq spectrum of the population they are geared more to the lower ecconomic demographic the people that realistically would not have the disposable income to support gambling hence why the betting agencys make it so simple to get on to the betting apps.

as i said before i have no problem with adults making decisions on how they spend their money but i do have a problem when there is no avoiding the constant prompts from gambling agencys to gamble especially when kids and the most vunerable are exposed to the prompts...

i am against gambling .. i work hard for my hard earned and the idea of giving it to a sport bet agency on the premis that its a "bit of fun" doesnt compute with me but to eaches own i dont care either way how you spend your money , what i do care about is manipulation tactics gambling agencys use to lure customers in . what i do care about is that a 10 year old kid cant watch a game of football either at the game or on TV or online without being prompted to place a bet.. last season I remember reading a statistic from a person online who from curiosity sake counted how many times during the half time break an advert or mention of betting was made , on that particular game it was over 30 prompts to bet .. let that sink in OVER 30 in one half time break , that moves advertising away from the "brand awareness" or "brand promotion" area into a whole new level saturation , that saturation is not targeting you for your $50 a week bit of fun punt that type of saturation is ingraining a culture of betting into the population it is drawing in weaker willed and the easily influenced and there is no escaping it at all .. there is no opt out it is there force fed to us all consistantly and while you are right most of us can tune it out its saturation makes sure that those who are not strong enough to tune it out are never missed..

but i doubt you will understand cause in the world according to plugger66 its just a bit of fun..

I don't mind gambling, have a William Hill account and punt on footy, UFC, Rugby and NFL. I don't spend beyond my means and am responsible, having said that (and I used to think very differently) the gambling advertising has gone wayyyyy too far, kids in school discussing the odds now when I was a kid (and I'm only 30) you talked about your favourite player. Seriously some friends have primary school aged kids and their son was talking to me about how Richmond can win back to back flags because odds wise Sydney is much shorter, when I was his age I was saying no one can stop the Saints cause Stewie Loewe is amazing.

I understand and generally agree that people are accountable for their own actions and I don't have much sympathy for people who piss away their money gambling but when kids are discussing the odds and have the idea of gambling so normalised they grow up having no understanding or realization of the risks involved in it. That's an issue.

Leafy green world. I earn about 60K a year mowing lawns. I still owe plenty on my house and have to look after my daughter on my own. At least we got it out of you. Your against gambling. And I certainly understand but I'm glad you resorted to having a go at me personally. I didn't bother doing that to you because I always realised it wasn't about the ads but about gambling in general. I still stand by $50 a week being bugger all for most people, Some would spend that on coffee. I choose to spend it on gambling and then I have my takeway which is another $100 a week and another $100 on grog. I believe you only live once so spend it how you want to. Nothing to do with some imaginary leafy green world as you call it. And yes for most people it is a bit of fun.

I don't have any stats to back up my theory (although I'm sure someone else probably does) just as you don't, but kids quoting the betting odds to me indicates that punting on sport has become completely normalised and the inherent risks that are associated with gambling will be much easier to ignore.

Consider if you had well known spokemen spruiking how great smoking was during the game, sure its still a parents responsibility to educate their kids to the risks but it would be so much harder to when its being normalised so much.
