If you hate that imagine how much I hate reading "should of" and "he's shoulder" and terrible spelling of basic words despite everyone having auto correct. I can get that it's a footy forum, but it physically makes me wince reading all these low-level errors - maybe because they're so common.
As long as you do realise that not everybody is educated to the same level and some people purely and simply cant spell very well and have shizenhousen grammar.
Dont take it personal if somebody is an idiot

That's interesting: I've found auto-correct causes bigger problems and often inserts wrong words or apostrophes in, especially when typing with an iphone or ipad and I have a much higher tolerance threshold when it comes to writing issues on forums where people type quickly accordingly.

Also working in English in a Swedish company has sent my level of tolerance for written English through the roof. I barely see errors anymore, I speak and read Swenglish. :D

I reckon the headline sums up Aussies pretty well in general. We are all experts with no basis here....Melbourne cup, every Melbournian has the form guide out talking about horse racing like they train horses them selves then spend 35 minutes at the TAB trying to feed incorrectly filled out tickets in to the machine. Every election we become experts at politics and know everything about economics. We spend 10 minutes anywhere and we think we're locals.
Perhaps, but the article more refers to campaigners like me who spend a few months in Japan teaching English in our little ex-pat bubble and feel licenced to impart our profound wisdom on the entire culture to anyone who will listen. I have actually referenced the famous hammer-nail phrase a few times myself while explaining Nihongo culture, so you could say that the article hit home. I thought it was funny, and very accurate. (no offence meant to you in particular, George)

But I think we all think we are experts on a place after we've been there a little while, especially the more culturally distinct places.

I also believe that sometimes folks with "fresh eyes" can see something with more clarity than those who've been looking at it their whole lives.

It's worse for me, occasionally I reread my own writing and think who the **** wrote this incoherent error riddled shit pile. I type quick and don't read as a i go, not a great combo.

True.
I'll raise my hand and admit I'm not exactly what you'd call a " highly educated man" .
To be honest my grammar " ain't too goodly".
And I'm always being pulled up by the 'Grammar Nazi's' for mistakes. And to be honest I FARRKEN HATE IT:mad::p
As a highly educated man (if I may say), that grammar nazi crap drives me crazy. it's rude and elitest. Besides, it shows a complete lack of respect for people who have other forms of expertise. It's a footy forum for heaven's sake, not a peer reviewed journal.

For the most part, most people are an expert, or really good at something. Now, often that may not be spelling, and it may not be an area that I or others are usually interested in. But guess what: not many people are interested in 17th century toleration of religious minorities in England (my PhD topic), so who am I to judge.

We're experts on the St Kilda footy club, and a fair bit besides (as this and other threads attest) . As long as you get your point across, who gives a stuff about spelling, etc.

The safest place I've ever worked and lived, from a purely security aspect, was in was Tehran. Seriously. No alcohol was probably a major reason, as was the fact if you were considering acting up, there was the religious police to deal with as well as the rank and file coppers, who all seemed to be armed with automatic weapons. So if you could put up with those factors, the pay off was that it was relatively safe to walk the streets at any time. Penalties for offending were savage as well. An interesting study in trading civil liberties for safety. Personally, I'd much rather live here. That would also apply if you are a woman.......
Some historians argue a similar thing is why the Reformation never caught on in inquisitional Spain.

Firstly, I'm talking about basic stuff like the examples I gave, things that you learn when you are 9 or 10 years old. So even if you didn't get enough English lessons as a child, most people should have read enough by the time they become adults to notice the correct grammar/spelling and copy that.

Secondly, my little brother didn't finish school and can't write for shit, but he's no dumbass and has done much better with his career than I. I don't equate writing poorly to being an idiot, but it annoys me in the same way others get ticked off with bad drivers, for example.

I feel that person could have done better there, why haven't they learnt that simple rule yet? It's frustrating.

Yeah, that's why I said the headline. Not great reading from a self confessed pedant. ;) I do think it's easier to gain more insight from being an outsider, you pick up things outside your norms. Anyway, I really love Japan and it's great place to visit, I like my space and wouldn't want to live in a big city there.

The funny thing is the old 20th culture of salary man conformity is changing pretty rapidly. There is a distinct individuality cult in the youth ( a lot looks exactly like what others do...but then that's subcultures all over the world).

There are no excuses for not learning good

I have met plenty of adults during my lifetime who cant read. Let alone get grammar down pat, even the basic stuff.
Im not having a crack at you Austinnn as i think you are a great poster and a very popular regular on this Saints thread.
Just trying to say not everybody picks up on their own errors.
Anyway lets move on:thumbsu:

Whilst we're on this, can I get a show of hands of people who actually consider reading manuals for things they purchase?

Pet peeve, someone contacts angrily about how we're making things difficult, then under direction turns to page 4 to find said instruction, abuses some more and leaves.

You kinda feel bad wishing that said customer drills something into their hand or builds something that immediately falls to pieces whilst others giggle.

Everybody is educated in something, most of the time. Plumbing, parenting, Happy Day episodes, something. :)

i just ignore it ... honestly my spelling and lack of grammar is more to do with the speed im typing inbetween doing other stuff ... i really cant be arse proof reading for an internet forum ... i think most people get what im getting at without too much issue

Just be so annoying that no one ever pulls you up on your grammar. It's genius laziness.

Happy to move on, but just first:

This conversation has caused me to ponder the nature of my frustration, and the comparison to bad driving helped me to recognise that I instinctively see it, not as a lack of education, but as carelessness.

So at that moment, I'm thinking "How could this guy not have noticed this simple mistake?" not "Why doesn't this guy know more?"

All these careless whispers on this internet forum, someone call George Michael.

That attitude shits me, it's like taking a plane in your underwear.

But whatever, takes all sorts to make a world.

BTW, Gringo is right, St Trav you make so many mistakes that I wouldn't even know what to start correcting first, so I don't even bother.

BTW2, you'll notice that I very rarely do pull anyone up on bad grammar or spelling, so I wouldn't say I'm a grammar Nazi, just a grammar member of the German public who voted the Nazis in.

Bad driving I can understand.

110km zone, entering at 80 or sub speed you are practically hoping that people, including yourself are paying attention or you are pretty much straight dead or critically injured, same as if you were entering at 110 and there was someone doing 140, which is sadly a daily occurrence on the route I travel to work.

I mean, all it takes is one person to screw up and you have a situation like I had on the Tulla in, stopped in traffic, and car up the back end pushing you into car in front. Everyone doing the right thing except 1 person and it screwed 5 lanes of traffic and at least 4 people.

Far greater consequence for screw ups than misspelling or parsing different phrases.

i own it though .... most of the time im multi tasking with 3 or 4 things going at the same time .. at the moment ive got a 3516 engine going full bore in the room next to me testing the fuel burn at full throtle... when i do things in an official capacity for instance any of the comunications to do with the Western Saints then i do slow down to make sure its correct but the rest of the time its just scatter gun go ...
i know i used to annoy the hell out of people on SS back in the day but meh if the only thing you can complain about is spelling then im going ok

You've never been annoying dude. You are one of the nicest guys on either forum. I was speaking for my own system of dealing with the pedantic folks. I'm pedantic and irritable about grammar but have low standards for myself. It must be some kind of psychological disfunction that makes me subconsciously self loathing.

maybe its a part of getting older ... maybe its in part our diet .. maybe its the non-personal interatctions we have now days .. maybe its the climate both political and physical .. maybe its our access to information.. maybe its our need to have our opinion vocalised and accepted .. or maybe we are just being conditioned to be less trusting and that in turn brings up differant emotions based on our environment for us it brings anger , for the americans it brings sadness/hopelessness for the Singaporeans it brings feelings of inadequacy and nervousness... Maybe the dutch have got it figured out ???
I'm seeing it more and more with my work these days. It's crazy.

People settle on a house then it's back on the market after 3 months.

Old couple selling. Husband is 75 with cancer. Turns out it's a divorce. I mean WTF?

Anyway, I think there are many reasons why. Not so much because we are getting older.

Constant fear.
Marketing which promises instant magic solutions.
Obsession with material possessions.
Giving a shit and getting angry over things that don't matter.
Helicopter parenting.
Personal definition of success.
How we are judged by our peers based on financial status or what work we do.
A sense of disconnect as the world changes at a rapid rate.
Information overload.

The list goes on and on.

People's lives are so over complicated it's not funny.

Too much focus on the me and not enough on the we.

There's too much media that tells you if you don't have the life you want then it's someone's fault, so we blame others and abdicate our responsibilities to society.
