What's everyone reading at the moment?

I really need to get back into my reading, it's dropped off in the last couple of years.

I've just started reading Sapiens and it's fascinating stuff.

I loved Sapiens, it's a really interesting read. I just finished a Danish book called We the Drowned which was okay, then a book by an Aussie about a murderer in Iceland called Burial Rites which I quite enjoyed and now reading Alias Grace by the woman who wrote the Handmaids Tale, I'm struggling to get into that a bit.

Before that I read A Little Life which I absolutely hated and some think is an amazing book. I can't say I have ever read a less enjoyable book. I went through a three book run of Donna Tartt before that with the Goldfinch, The Little Friend and some other one I have forgotten the name of. They were all great.

I'm reading Norman Finkelstein's book Image and Reality of the Israel-Palestine Conflict. All his work is excellent.

Sounds good mate, is that new?
It isn't his latest; his new book is a study of Gaza. If you're interested in the situation in the middle-east, I would recommend all his work. Finkelstein is an excellent scholar on the subject.

Big Footy. St Kilda Trade Thread. Gripping stuff. Twists on every page. Can’t put it down.

Some friends just came back and said it was a lovely orderly place with fantastic people that just wanted to feed you and get you to meet all their relatives. They didn't mention any social issues so I guess it depends where you go. They moved around but couldn't comprehend how different it was from what we see on TV.
Pretty much my experience as well, gringo. I'd love to go back, just for a holiday. I can thoroughly recommend it. The strangest thing I found was the mass demo when petrol rose 6c to 8 c a litre. The people took to the street in outrage. They love a public demo, many times to their detriment. Far more modern and cultured than is portrayed in the western media. Also agree about the people. Very friendly and hospitable, although I don't think many had much of a clue about Australia. We did have a reputation for working hard, which helped.

well, there was alot of love for Josh Kelly, but he stayed faithful....or did he??? Find out in the sequel: A Tryst With Kelly - 2019

We have had a few dashing knights ride in that looked like saviours but were secretly emptying the coffers...Sir Pelican of Hawthorn and Sir Baines of Footscray.

Blitzed: Drugs in Nazi Germany

and

Behemoth: A history of the factory and the making of the modern world.

I try to lighten out the reading with novels but the older I get the more critical I am of fiction, for me there's a real issue in the quality of story vs the quality of writing, can't quite get the two to match. :(

I saw there was a doco on SBS about the drugs in the Nazi party, I meant to watch it. I have seen some stuff mentioned but not the data compiled in one place. Interesting how narcotics are often fed to soldiers.

Now here's something to hyperventilate about, justice Kennedy has announced his retirement from the supreme court.

Trump and the republicans will push through his nominee locking in a true conservative majority.

Kennedy was a Reagan appointment but was an unpredictable voice.

This will potentially have more impact on the US going forward than Trump as President ever could.

Expect cries of outrage and much huffing and puffing from the democrats but it won't change who gets appointed.
