Sadly, journalism is dead. It's all about ******* clicks. :-( Sad, it is so hard to find news stories without the bias.

Sadly , many cant see the difference and just react to what they are presented with. We are becoming captives of social media driven algorithms- the masters of those algorithms who dont give a shit about their destructive influence. Even politicians are becoming enslaved .

Here’s another monumental fu** up by the Federal Government. The conservatives have always hated superannuation (except the scheme run for their benefit). This article is about the fraud committed in relation to early access of super. The moronic comments by the junior minister in this article are epic for stupidity.

There will be more articles written about the deleterious effects of this poor policy decision. Robbo was against it as soon as it was announced and the outcomes for people who accessed their super savings will effect them for the rest of their lives. To think that people have accessed this money for gambling and alcohol is mind boggling. The ABS said that some had accessed it so they had savings. FFS!

I strongly discouraged my peers from withdrawing super. I ran a calculator online and if I withdrew $10k it would cost be about $250k by retirement age. Considering I’m already 2 years behind due to maternity leave and I just would have been shooting my self in the foot.

Adhering overly stringently to ideological consistency can sometimes be counter productive. But, there are conduct thresholds which need to be respected; and when crossed justify making a stand in more ways than merely words. Our ongoing commercial relations with China make it even more important to communicate displeasure when necessary. If this isn't one of those times when it shouldn't be business as usual, then I don't know what would.

I totally agree with this.

How do you do that though? Its important to note, that the federal gov were complaining about this pre covid and the conspiracy theories regarding 5G are pre virus too.
The Chinese record on human rights and what they are supposedly doing to their Muslim minorities are good reason to use leverage to try and make positive change, But we have known of this for a long time.

A virus spreading the world, unless proved sinister in its release isn’t a reason to punish anyone, imo anyway. A certain US politician saying it was released on purpose, purely to try and shift blame for a poor response that has cost thousands of lives and a government desperate to not lose dominance in a region, are spreading fear to suit their political agenda.

No such thing as a free lunch though. There will be strings attached and "obligations" . DA doesnt have the resources to know these things - that is why there are federal agencies that investigate the geopolitical ramifications . Their judgement was that we shouldnt be entering into these agreements and DA went behind their back- that is not acceptable IMO.
Australia has a few big calls to make in the next decade: In many ways we are part of asia, in many ways we are not. Defence is the biggest positive that is associated with being close to the US and europe. China arent asking us to chose YET. What will we do when china take over Taiwan? Will we allow the south china sea to become a chinese military zone. Huge ramifications.

Without going down a huge rabbit hole here, of course there will be strings attached to any investment, do we think there are no strings attached to say a Chinese company being given the port of Darwin for 99 years, or The Chinese companies buying up large water rights in the Murray, power plants across the country, or the fact a Hong Kong/Chinese company that owns 3 out of the 4 electrical distribution companies in Victoria?

They buy these things and invest in these areas to make a profit and influence policy, that results in more favourable deals.

The anti China sentiment regarding the belt and road deal, is purely political point scoring, to undermine a leader/party.

I struggle to see how this is different to what is already happening across the country in nearly every industry, with the support of our government, also noting we have a free trade agreement with China. Can you shed any light on this?

If any agreement, even somewhat puts our countries national security at risk, the federal government will step in, if they don’t, I’ll assume they are just throwing mud.

I think, at first instance, even before establishing whether or not there is anything sinister, the very notion that we should be swayed from pursuing such understanding is offensive to our underlying values. How do you do it? Just refuse to be induced by prospect/s of immediate gain if there is a real risk that it could fracture established relations.

I agree with all the points you have made. But i also can feel the ground shifting at a National level. There is some real explaining to do on behalf of the CCP and they havent done that. A communist regime with scant regard for human rights is not the side that I want to be associated with. There have been many a blind eye turned by both labour and liberal over the years and there is no doubt that the country has benefited from it massively. But at a huge cost- not a rabbit hole to jump down on here though. I dont buy the Martin Jacques view of Chinese expansionism- which Hong Kong has proven .

What is the alternative to selling to foreign owned companies or foreign citizens? Do we lock up the country and only allowed property or businesses to be sold to Australia citizens? What if you wanted to sell your farm, business or house and no Australian person could afford to offer more than $500 at the time you wanted to sell? Does the asset become useless?

There are only so many Australian citizens/companies able to afford expensive items, why concentrate ownership even further by allowing them to buy at a discount because everyone else in the world who could pay market price is locked out of the process based on where they were born?

This pandemic is making people too inward looking, emotion has overtaken logic.

Jabba this opens a debate on our tax system which funnels the majority of AUD's into negative gearing of residential property. There are many other options as an investment class for mum and dad investors but it is ignored because of our tax system. The US dont treat residential property investment anywhere near as favorably as we do and so they dont have the same myopic approach to investment. If a courageous government undertook a thorough revamp of our tax system they could encourage investment into areas away from negatively geared property. This would open the door into investments that mainly foreigners fear to tread. We have the talent in this country to be world leaders in a lot of areas but no venture capital to develop the research. We have the money to buy and control our own water rights. If the chinese see our rural land as prized assets- why dont we? its all to do with after tax returns . Change the tax system and you will get a completely different direction of investor flow from australians

I have a client who is Chinese-Australian, who advises the wealth of Ultra-high net wealth Chinese investors. A lovely person who I always enjoy speaking with.
We had a chat recently around the Australian aggressive towards China; he gave me a very thoughtful 15 min reply to this. Which was along the lines of; China wants to be the next world power, the USA knows this, Australia is better to align with the USA now, since Australia has maximised its opportunities with China now. China is slowing, less to gain than previously.

Wasn't what I expected to hear, and he was complimentary towards our foreign policy. His clients also really love Australia, none are reading the news and considering taking $$$ back to China etc. They invest in some of my companies products, as individuals, all they care about is the return. And not losing money - same as everyone I deal with.

China play a much longer term game than australia or the west in general play. This thing called democracy continually gets in the way and puts a hand brake on any long term visions. Thats something that you have to admire about the CCP- they get a lot right when it comes to;- what is the best for their nation long term - at least in strategic infrastructure and job creation. But boy that is at a huge price for human rights etc. Its fair to say IMO that a lot of the chinese money that has exited china for our shores and many other countries are the more enlightened ones , who dont want to be part of that regime- so it is not surprising that they love our country and way of life.
Ausralians have a really complex and hard choice to make in the next few years as the US and china ramp up hostilities

Foreign buyers often overpay for junk & lose a lot of money, but no one talks about that because it doesn't fit their argument.
Sadly, I think many people think they are educated on world matters via watching a current affairs and 60 mins.

Stephen Quartermain
@Quartermain10
May 31

"Australia ain’t perfect. But compared to most, we truly are the lucky country".

Spoken by a true middle class, white, male suit.

Bingo, tell that to a significant % of the Indigenous Population, Women (and their kids) who are victims of domestic violence being forced to live on the streets due to lack of accommodation in Women Shelters, Refugees seeking a better life from war forn nations locked up like Sardines on Manus Island etc

Quarterbrain is probably one of those naive idealistic idiots who sprout the "All Lives Matter" crap when it comes to the BLM movement with regards to the George Floyd case, which has now being designated as a homicide.

I am sure it is not done intentionally, but the attitudes of Quartermain are exactly part of the ingrained problem and the reason why left wing groups are so angry with the contemptible attitude (worldwide) the straight white male has towards people of colour, Women LBGT community and other minority racial and religous groups.

And the more people in Australia who get poisoned by Trump and the dangerous far right rhetoric, the more attitudes of Quartermain seem an inappropriate and outdated response..

Some absolute rubbish in there but, some fair responses too. The “close the thread” and “consenting adults, no story here” calls are on the money.

Fair to say that much of the salacious conversation would be called on this board.

Why? Not asking for a fight, just genuinely intrigued. Its about football people? Its about clubs?

Because an awful lot of it is pretty disrespectful. Imagine if you were Danielle Hardwick or his daughters - or Damien Hardwick's new partner - and you saw some of what's said in that thread?

People are allowed to joke, but there's some off colour stuff doing the rounds. There's also the fact that it is none of our business, but I don't think I'd get anywhere near consensus there.

I haven't ventured into the thread, nor do I intend to, its really not my cup of tea. I was just curious is all mate.

A lot of people have been hurt badly over this issue, esp Mrs Hardwick and their children.

There is somehat of a 1950s attitude to some Tigers fans almost congratulating his 'latest conquest' and especially the 'he has won 3 flags; he can shag who he wants' crap.

It's a form of degrading and objectifying women, with those type of comments.
