Club History Random moments in Swans history

As a Perth boy some of the best memories for me came from the rivalry with West Coast. I was only in primary school, and I would wear my Swans scarf or hat to school and cop flack from all of my mates, about 90% of who were Eagles fans. And the whole week leading up to each game was so intense. Like genuine beef would break out during recess over talk about the match. It just felt like so much was riding on each game, and it was awesome for the club to be involved in such an intense rivalry with the club that just happened to be in my state. It was like the closest an interstate Swans supporter could get to seeing a Hawks vs Essendon or Crows vs Port style rivalry.

But one moment that’s always stood out to me was in the 05 grand final, Sean Dempster giving the 2005 version of the don’t-argue to Ben Cousins on the wing. Seeing one of our up and comers do that to one of the best players in the comp was great to see and my granddad who is a die-hard Eagle was watching with me and he said to me, “I think you’re gonna win this.” He obviously didn’t know **** because that bit of play did nothing to make the win any easier for us lol

But it’s been like etched into my memory for like 13 years now

I remember an odd one when Paul Kelly had been out a while and didnt we put him in v the dockers in perth at the last minute as a surprise or did i dream that?

No. It happened. And within minutes he went up on a stepladder and almost took mark of the year.

Jaw. Floor.

Paul Kelly jogging off the ground - straight off to a full knee reco.

Libba getting booed off the ground while being cartied on a stretcher

The pregame advertising blimp going out of control and crashing into the stands

The Swans chant appearing for the first time in round 22, 1996, when we smashed West Cost in a deluge in from of 30k fans to secure the minor premiership.

Swans down by 7 goals to Norf at half time, ground plays the song 'I believe in miracles' by Hot Chocolate as a joke. We then come out and run over the top of them, with Kel shrugging 3 tacklers to bash through one of the greatestest individual goals I've ever seen to put us in front at the death.

Voss taking a dive in the goal square at the SCG (2005?) to get a free. Crowd was in shock, and first time ever I booed Voss. It was the exact moment the Lions era ended, and their legacy jumped the shark. Never been sighted since.

Jon Stevens getting in the way of Willo kicking a goal in his 300th. In goal square, realises what was haporning, tried to get out of the way, slipped and the ball landed on his back. Hilarious

Saints coming to the SCG undefeated only to lose by 30-40ish points. Leo Barry managed to keep Gehrig goaless with only 3 touches?
Was that when Saint Nick took his amazingly brave mark running back with the flight into a wall of players ? I was almost sick with the sound of the impact. My respect for him went through the roof though. He carried that Saints team for so long.

Belting the piss out of Carlton in a year when they were basically unstoppable in 95 always sticks out in my mind.

.....

That was my first Swans game. I'd been a Geelong supporter but moved to Sydney. Went with my manager who was a Carlton supporter so I decided to support the underdogs. I've been supporting the Swans ever since.

I don't know why but I was bawling my eyes out as an 10 year old after watching us lose to Richmond by 6 points back in 2002.

Probably because I knew it was the beginning of the end for Eade, Kelly, Dunkley etc.

In 1998 I remember round 4 at the WACA we beat the eagles and schwass kicked 5
Goals

Thought we would win the flag until Kelly got injured later that year

That 98 side was a good team

Aww.

My heart breaks when I see the little ones upset after a game.

I remember our win v Richmond in 96 at Waverley think Dunkley or Direen to a charge on the goal line to get a free and save us
Yep. Was in Year 5. Can remember a kid a bit younger than me kicking the back of my seat crying "why do we always lose mummy". Also remember driving out the carpark (what a freaking nightmare that was!) and having footballs kicked at the car and grown men pulling garden stakes out the ground and hurling them in our direction. Absolute filth.

Not sure why, but this match has always been stuck in my mind.

Remember that, was a pretty lucky free to Cresswell...

The game where Jetta kicked his first goal in 2010 was an awesome one to be at too.

I remember at least here in tas the Saturday arvo games in mid 90s weren’t live, so it was hope we were on abc radio or watch the second half replay at 4 30 knowing usually we had lost

In 96 we were playing north in roos 300th and I was playing outside and mum yelled out the swans replay was starting why don’t I watch and I presumed she was just taking the piss cos no doubt we lost, but nah we killed them.

Was so odd to get used to us being a top team

Was right in front of me, Dunkley got illegally shepherded by richo

Turning point too iirc correctly cos won without playing that well

When we drew with Essendon Think we had won 3 games in a row prior so 3 and a half wins for the swans in a row was celebrated on club buggery that night ,

Coincidence but was at that game as well, 21st birthday present from the guys at work. Flew up and had a ball. Came from 6 goals down from memory, justin crawford should have won it for us late but missed.

Yeah that’s right

Plugger kicked like 7 or 8?

I remember thinking Crawford would be as good as his brother lol and in 96 loved watching kickett, the guy looked like he spent the week at the pub drinking and eating and then kicked it beautifully

The year that got away that one. Even with kelly out we could have still won it. Semi vs adelaide and both Creswell and micky o done by qtr time with injury

And random crow toss the match winner, Vardy or whoever?
