After a tough end to 2016 personally, 2017 has not exactly been great either so far.

My Dad had sudden bowel surgery yesterday, and during surgery found other complications that likely would have mean death in near future if not picked up as it by chance was.

Dad is in ICU and sure the recovery will be much longer due to the extensive surgery, but Dad and us have been very lucky in the circumstances.

The ICU staff and Dr who performed the work at Calvary have been outstanding. They deserve a massive thank you for their fantastic work.
Thoughts with you and yours, Saintly. Hopefully some better things are coming your way soon.

Sorry to hear Saintly. Health throws some very crazy curveballs at us during life.

No doubt the old man is as tough as wood pecker lips! I'm he'll pull through and come out the other side tougher than ever.
Thanks mate. Yeah certainly does, as Dad went to hospital in pain Sunday, supposed to be out in a couple of days after antibiotics but turns out much worse than expected......found "peritonitis" during bowel surgery. Scary stuff, never heard of it before.

As a Longford boy he certainly is bred tough. I'm very hopeful you are right, thanks again.

Massive prayers go out to the families of those affected by the Bourke St car tragedy today, both the deceased and those in critical condition.

Just so upsetting, and to think this kind of behavior happens in society.

Why wasn't he stopped in the middle of the Flinders St intersection when he was doing the donuts?
My understanding is he took off when police attempted to stop him at Flinders.

Don't think it's really fair to point fingers at police in this case (not saying you are Gaso, but have read some pretty shit comments already)

Police arrive quickly, idiot takes off.

Yeh nar...despite having pretty good Internet access it is sketchy. We have a relative that works very close to where it ended so being so far away its unsettling and Mrs Gaso is a bit panicky. Thankfully Grandma Gaso had done the chasing about and relative is fine.

Angry, unnerving and distressing.

Thoughts with those families.

Until the next nightclub shooting, mosque bombing, isis chemical gassing.

Am convinced we live in a sad world. Glass half empty for me. What makes people do these things ? No answer.

Be glad when the next meteorite / comet strikes. Sitting here with a gin & tonic and
open arms.

Sorry to all affected ( basically all 7.5 billion of us ) but we blew it. Let the insects and wildlife takeover and see if they can do a bit better.

Now isn't the time to be pointing fingers at police, corrective services, politicians etc. Innocent people went into the city today to go about their normal business/recreation and three will never come home and dozens are in hospitals and even more will have seen things they could have only imagined in their nightmares. The time for the blame game will come and might need to come. But not now.

Well said.

I am not into blame but serious constructive community discussion about how all key departments deal with mental health illness...that includes the education...health and Medical in addition to the Police and Judicial systems to prevent these types of tragic events.

Ur damned if u do ur damned if u don't.

So alot of journos and the public have all become experts on how best to deal with a nut with a drug and violent history behind the wheel doing dohnuts in the heart of the city with thousands of people watching after he already stabbed someone and took another hostage that later jumped out of the moving car.

The police i'm sure did the best they could with the training and experience they have.

What happened was horrific for the families of the dead the injured and those that witnessed it.
My thoughts are with them and all the public that helped the injured, including the two men that risked their life trying to stop the car.

Yeah that's the question I've been grappling with all afternoon since watching that video. Especially when there is a police "station" right at Flinders St Station.

Seems they made the call to lay back off him and try to bring it to a head in a less congested area. These things are rarely a black and white consideration.

Yeah, it's easy to offer "advice" in hindsight, knowing you'll never actually be required to make that split second decision, nor face the potential outcomes.

This is on the magistrate that let him back out, not the cops on the day.

For once in my life, I won't blame the pigs, they got this one right as they requested he remained behind bars/remand/in custody or whatever it is they do.

I will never understand what makes people go from a recreational user of drugs to habitual users which can result in carnage like yesterday.

The government should label ice a "clear and present danger" of Australia and force everyone to be tested, if you test positive, no benefits until you are clean, if you weren't born here and test positive, off you go.

Peoples rights go out of the window in times like this.
