Why is it that every name that comes up seems to be better than the names we already have.
It's almost as though there is a 50% quality loading on any player that doesn't currently wear the Navy Blue.

My wish list:

1 * Tall key back. (Ruck capable)
1 * Quality mid.

We may already have these amongst our group, but they may just not be ready yet.

Judd, Murphy, Gibbs, Simmo, Robbo, Scotland + more are all capable of playing midfield well. How much more quality do we need? :p

Would prefer a ready made KPF, although they are hard to come by. We need to look for one in the lesser leagues that are AFL capable me thinks.

Our midfield is good but we'd be silly not to pick up a gun mid if the opportunity presented itself. As long as it didn't come at the cost of a gun KPP.

Nail down the back-line and find more feed into the forward 50 and the rest will take care of itself.

Henderson, Waite, and Walker will take care of our marking power, along with Betts, Garlett and the mids will take care of our scoring power.

+1 on that Harks.
Our forward line is fine, when you consider we can always throw Carlos into that mix as well. What we need to is get another quality tall down there. Again, we have a heap of options.

Once Bower is fit, he's as good as anyone on our list.
Do we move Henderson back with Jamo, and our forward line consists of Waite, O'Hailpin and Walker?
Does Austin have a massive preseason, and show something early in 2012.
Simon White........

As good as we have been this year, we have done it on the back of having injuries to most of our talls on our list. If we can have a bit more luck in this department next year, we could really push hard into the top 2.

In trade week, only go after quality. If we can't get it, go to the draft with the selections that we have.

l do not agree that this forward structure will take us to a premiership, right now the Pies are a 5 goal better side than us at their best, we need a quality tall forward, Waite is getting to the back half of his career and Henderson right now looks at best a 2nd or 3rd tall option certainly not the key forward we can built our team around.

If we look at the last month, we are getting the inside 50's we just do not have any tall players up forward to make a contest and give the small players the opportunity to do their best work.

Seriously Mark Austin has been in the system for many years, he is going to battling to stay on the list at year end, the other point about options, yes they may be options but are they going to be good enough to take us all the way to a flag, you also mentioned O'Alphin how many games per year can we rely on him being fit over the course of the year and playing in good form, probably 4 at best, neither of these two are going to take us all the way, we are still some way off the Magpies who have a list that will be up for quite some time, we need to look at some external options to bridge this gap that exists.

Sure, we just go and pick up a loose Cloke and there you have it.

Don't get drawn into the Collingwood model as being the be all and end all.
It's just a phase as per any other previous premier and as for us we can't follow, but lead.
A mobile forward line has been largely developed and we just need to put a couple of missing pieces in place for the whole mechanism to work.
You'll see.

agreed 100 % austin is NOT A AFL player. i know a few big blokes playing in the efl that would be more deserving than he is.

l hope you are right, but l suspect we do not have the current forward structure to take us to a flag, right now l compare our team against the Pies structure and their defence is significantly better than ours, we have scope for improvement in our defence with Watson over the next 1-2 years and possibly McCarthy, but l see our list limited with scope for improvement in our front half, our structure is reliance on Waite who is in the back half of his career, naturally Mitchell was recruited to be a key forward, but there has to be a fair degree of doubt on him in relation to his body, so for us to challenge seriously next year we will need to identify someone to provide us with a more rounded forward half.

Mac....for the sake of discussion and assuming we had a full list to choose from which player running around in the afl would ou slot into our front half next week and at the expense of who?

Of course I'm not sure, but even through these recent lean weeks, I like what I see.
We have a huge point of difference with our forward line that is very hard for sides to match up against.

We've been our own worst enemies in recent weeks, but the sense prevails through the fog.
We don't need, nor do we want a Fev, Hall, Hawkins or even a Riewoldt as silly as that may sound on face value as it would only upset the mix and again take us down a different path.

We lacked Waite and Henderson up forward on the weekend and it showed.
Had have we had the feed we did with those two guys up there on Saturday, we may just be talking a different language here right now.

There is little doubt if we had a Travis Cloke or Josh Kennedy type right now we would have a much more complete side, naturally this is not reality, but based on the some of the points stated Waite is becoming injury prone in his latter years, we can only rely on O'Alphin for the odd decent game over the course of the year, injury question marks on Mitchell and Henderson although having a restricted pre-season he has been not really shown as yet he would be better than a 2nd or 3rd forward option, my belief is that we still have some work to do with our list to give us a real chance against the Pies, yes we were very competitive without several players on the weekend, but their team was hardly near their best either with Dawes,Didak,Shaw and Beams missing also.

I was asking because I don't disagree with some of the question marks you have....I still have faith one of Henderson (with 1 or 2 more pre-seasons) or Mitchell can provide that bigger target for us

The reality is that Carlton nor any other side will be blessed with a 22 AA squad, so we have to mould the best of what we have and hope to secure the odd "King" here or there to make it all work.
Collingwood struck gold with Jolly and Ball and a premiership cup ensued.

We'll ebb and flow at times but we have a very good squad at our call right now.
Given good player management and the adherence to a game plan and we're well and truly in the mix.

true Harks, but I also think it might pay to start thinking about KPF depth now.

Depth is a dual edged sword.
We all want it, yet we really can't afford it.

I can't see us having the financial resources to win over more than one or possibly two big ticket items in the off-season, yet even then some fat would need to be shed for that to happen.

Not having all the numbers at hand it's hard to work out what we'd need to do in order for us to attain any further key personnel, but at best guess it would amount to some risk in trades.

IMO, Carlton need a forward who will competently take the #1 defender, however not be a dominant figure. Hence, the out of sorts Jesse White IMO would be a good get. He was thrown around alot in the fev trade when he was in ripping form, and a change of scenery could be fantastic for him

If we had Cloke in our forward line, I have no doubt that we would win the flag this year.

Can still have a mobile forward line with a gun forward in it.

I brought up his name in another thread. Surely wouldnt cost a lot after being largely out of favour for a year.

Would only need 20-30 goals out of him for us, and it would be very useful.

IMO, will be beneficial due to a number of criteria's

1) He would take the number 1 defender due to size and 'stay at home' FF role, allowing Waite to play that true CHF/wing role, and for Walker to take 3rd tall
2) He is not a dominant presence, rather another option up forward
3) With a basketball background, he is athletic enough to work well with our 'hard running' team structure.
4) He has proven that he has talent from a few seasons back, and is only 25/26 (i think), hence capable of regaining form (it's hard for him to get a crack with a forwardline of Reid, LRT and Goodes inhibiting the F50)
5) He would be relatively cheap (as apposed to a Hawkins type)
6) Premiership teams usually have adequate FF (Q.Lynch, T.Hawkins & N.Ablett at the very least). Jesse White is good for 20/30 goals, and at the very least is depth for Setanta (our only ready made FF)
7) Would allow Watson/Casboult/Mitchell etc time to develop in the 2's.

Just ideas thrown out

If we can find a useful Duigan, Curnow and Laidler from the lower leagues, why not a useful KPP? I know they are harder but we need to look at these options because of the cost you raised trying to prise away a KPP player from another club. We cant compete with lower ranked clubs and the new clubs money-wise.

We need to pluck one! Everyone will go, who? But that is WHs job same as he found Duigan...

The thing with Carlton is..there are KPP slots open due to perennial injuries...if you find someone, they could just grow into the role because they are so needed...a bit like Duigan...we needed a bigger body down back and he improves our player balance because of it!

Not saying it is easy mind you..but this is the difference in us plucking a flag...it is just not the players firing up; it is just not Ratts doing his job, but it is also luck/skill at the draft/trade table...like you said, Pies got lucky and got a flag with Jolly/Ball! We need to get lucky to fill our weaknesses.

Would be ecstatic if we managed to get Jesse White. Has struggled for consistency, but when he's firing, he's am amazing player.

He's probably not high up on our list of priorities, however I wonder what we would offer for Brett Deledio.IMHO we need an outside midfielder with polish, who can break the lines and hit up leading forward targets.

... and he was a Carlton supporter growing up :p
