Hahahaha loving life. Might pop along to the Reds ACL game tomorrow night actually. Will be interesting to see how the new tram goes. Has anybody done that park and ride thing, from the Ent. Centre, for $2 yet?
 
I'm looking forward to seeing Webber and Vettel hopefully on the podium this weekend. Hopefully the race is more exciting then last week, F1 needs PIT STOPS!

Pit stops aren't the answer. They had pit stops prior to 2009 and the racing was still tediously dull, with 9/10 races being little more than a follow-the-leader type procession.

The problem lies with the aerodynamics of the cars themselves, which makes overtaking almost impossible unless there is a significant performance difference between the cars involved.

Right now the faster car can easily catch up to the slower car, but then they hit the disturbed air left behind by the car in front. The disturbed air makes it very difficult to reduce the gap to much less than 0.7-0.8 seconds, as the altered airflow reduces the effect of the aerodynamics on the overtaking car. Thus, the only overtaking opportunities are really on the long straights, when the overtaking car can pull out into the clean air and blast past the slower moving vehicle. That works fine when there's a big performance gap, as exists between the top cars and the tailenders - but when there's a minimal performance gap then it becomes a very tall order to make up that 0.7-0.8 sec deficit and get in front.

There really isn't any easy solution to this problem. Any object moving at 200+kph is going to leave a trail of disturbed air behind it. It's all but impossible to design an aerodynamics package which can be optimised for both clean air and disturbed air. That would require a system capable of dynamically altering the aerodynamic characteristics of the car every few microseconds. We're talking budgets in the range of billions of dollars to achieve that - not even F1 teams can come up with that sort of money.

The only other alternative is for the overtaking car to leave their braking really, really late - making up the gap while the lead car is slowing down to take the corner. The problems with this are fairly obvious. Firstly, you stand a good chance of overshooting the corner completely and screwing up your race entirely. Secondly, even if you do get it done there's a good chance that you'll lock up your tyres and put a "flat spot" on them - resulting in vibrations which make the car almost uncontrollable, or an extra pit stop to change tyres again. Thirdly, for the most part there is only one "racing line" for any corner - any other line through the turn is thus slower by definition. By braking late, you're forced to turn harder into the corner, resulting in a slower exit speed. This is why you often see positions re-gained in the very next turn (moreso in V8s than F1). Any way you care to look at it, overtaking by out-braking your opponent is a seriously risky business.

The other thing to consider is how the drivers and constructors championship points are awarded. In 2010 points are awarded as follows: 1st - 25, 2nd - 18, 3rd - 15, 4th - 12, 5th - 10, 6th - 8, 7th - 6, 8th - 4, 9th - 2, 10th - 1. This system rewards consistency - you're better off finishing 2nd twice in a row than 1st and 5th, so why bother overtaking if you're putting your points haul at risk and the reward doesn't justify it?

It is seriously frustrating watching F1 when the race turns into a procession lap after lap and the only opportunity to overtake is put down to your pit crews ability.

Keen to see what "The Bounce" is like tonight at 7:30 (Ch 7). Read an article that one of the sketches is based around Colin Banks and got a little more excited. Colin Banks is a man who's life revolves around the office footy tipping competition. This was from one sketch on Rove 99, can't believe he's back over a decade later, hopefully with a segment.

The Punk'd like skit at the end with Maxwell and Sidebottom was pretty good I thought, and I liked Matthews and Richo's analysis' of the games, but the rest with shit, even our Knighta was ordinary (not his fault of course).:thumbsdown: Colin Banks wasn't too bad either.

Summs up my view on The Bounce too. The actual football analysis was very good. The comedy was generally quite poor - Tweets of the Week was the only good comedy part. The taxi skit was poor, Are You Smarter Than A Footballer was awful (it was clear the Essendon supporter was a plant), and that final skit was average.
