Adelaide Uni has a better culture & obviously a smarter group collectively going to the uni. But I've found that UniSA has a pretty neat set up and I rate there online resources much higher then Adelaides. Culturally its shit though.

Depends on the field, to be honest. You wouldn't really go to UniSA for law or medicine or anything like that but various tech-related fields are much better at UniSA.

Be careful saying that out loud. They get near militant about it! (Not that you wouldn't be correct ;))

More blue blood university snobbery from Jo?

Shock horror.

If you can find anyone who voluntarily did UniSA law as an undergrad who either didn't get into Adelaide or acknowledged that they wouldn't I'd be shocked. Flinders I've matured enough to be palatable, but the zeal UniSA people defend it with when in their heart of hearts they know it was their second, or more often third choice is breathtaking.

It's the same type of logic that led me to thinking I won the state election by Mick Atkinson not standing for Cabinet.

Honestly, do you really feel 'my TER is higher than yours' chest beating is of substance?

The superiority complex youve developed is fairly sickening.

Now that Carl has explained this to me i can finally use this: Strawman!

What I said has little to do with TERs and all to with hypocrisy.

And your confusing me having a superiority complex with the inferority complex of yourself and others.

I really don't give a crap about TERs. I know some phenomenally dumb people who got 98+ and now have Adelaide law degrees.

I just find the constant need to justify people doing what was originally their second or third choice with things other than that their first choice wasn't availiable a tad pathetic.

In terms of quality there in all likelihood is **** all difference between the three degrees (although this is naturally hard to assess at this point with UniSA). Adelaide's main draw card is a letterhead that will get you in all over town and for those who live north of Cross Road convenience!

Don't get me wrong, i feel superior to many, many people but not by reason of University choice. I'm just that ****ing good :p (fwiw taking piss)

From a friend who studied Law at Adelaide Uni, he says the rest of the country considers it to be more the best of a bad bunch when it comes to SA universities.

As for other courses, I did a year of Engineering at UniSA - the place is pretty much a glorified TAFE. The sole emphasis is on turning students rapidly into a workforce, the old ideals of University seem to be long gone.

As someone who has had a hand in teaching Engineering students at UniSA, I can assure you it is anything but a glorified TAFE. If anything, I'd say there's not enough focus on turning out students into particular jobs. Unless you're counting the fact that they have a tonne of industry partnerships against them.

That said, I'm not a huge fan of our current Engineering degree where every student is funneled through a uniform system regardless of which branch of Engineering they're doing for the first couple of years. It seems to pointless to have civil engineers doing exactly the same subjects as electrical engineers, who do the same as mechanical engineers. I would have preferred them to keep it diversified.

There's no doubt that Adelaide Uni has the runs on the board when it comes to reputation - I'm over at a Uni in America at the moment for a couple of months, and occasionally you find people who have heard of Adelaide Uni. Nobody has ever heard of UniSA. Adelaide Uni is the only one in SA in the Go8 group which helps it out alot.

Does this mean Adelaide Uni offers a better education, or a better environment? Of course not. It does, however, mean that if you wish to stay in academia as a career, you're going to have more luck applying for a job with a degree from Adelaide than from Flinders or UniSA.

That's a fair representation.

Mind you, that's how the rest of the world regards all the other Australian law schools.

If ST wants to hear some real, honest to god snobbery he should speak to an academic I once knew who assured me if one wanted to get a proper degree they must go to one of Harvard, Yale, Oxford or Cambridge! That I would suggest is the height of pretence!

My supertafe comment seems to have unleashed a bit of a ****storm. FWIW it was just a light-hearted pisstake with no snobbery intended.

That wasn't Crow-Mo by any chance :D

I've just been diagnosed with shingles only a day out from my last, and hardest, exam of the year. It really is pissing me off, couldn't have come at a worse time!

Uh, no.

Theres no strawman there at all. Its exactly what you were saying.

You came into the thread talking down on a degree offered by another university, then supported it by saying that those students would rather be at your uni, but failed to get in. The implication being both that your uni is superior, and that you personally are superior for getting in. Given that the criteria for entry is TER, your feelings of superiority can be directly linked to TER.

As far as inferiority complexes go.... no, this isnt the first time you've brought up the law university comparisons. Thing is... its usually only you bringing it up. Noone ive ever spoken to from any other university actually cares much.

No, their low TER is a reason for them feeling inferior, I feel superior to their feeling of inferiority.

Stabby brought it up.

And when I'm with people I rarely bring up my line of work or degree with strangers/people not involved in the industry because it's not worth the pissing contest.

They say we have to get it from somewhere, they also say somewhere over a rainbow!
