Daleks been getting many call outs ?

Many is an understatement. In my seven years as a volunteer fire fighter, never have I seen it this busy. As of this morning, there were 22 notable sized wildfires around SA, plus many smaller scale ones.

I spent a 16 hour shift at Delamere on Tuesday. Since then there's been calls to the Barossa, Ceduna and Renmark. Plus, attending smaller scale calls at Sellicks and Myponga, as well as a fire which began this afternoon at Blewitt Springs.

I was looking through the photos I took while at the Delamere fire. Nothing I took turned out that great. One of my fellow crew members took this one though, and it ended up in The Advertiser.

Watching replay of Serena Williams vs Ivanovic

Actually feel a bit for Serena. She's always the villain. She's so good that the crowd are always supporting the underdog against her.

It's always been like this as well. She's bigger/stronger so it's natural to think she has an unfair advantage, and as a result to support her opponent.

She's never been a crowd favourite.

She's had a couple of unsavoury incidents over the years - threatening a linesman who foot faulted her and losing the plot at a chair umpire who took a point off her ("unattractive on the inside") but these weren't that long ago and the attitude towards her pre-dates these anyway.

Sure, she has her millions and millions of dollars to cheer her up.

Did 5 days as an urgent response strike team to the Peth Hills 2 weeks ago 55+ homes gone.

Busy here the last few days with the heat.

Truro fire looked bad

Thanks :thumbsu:

If only more young people got in involved due to brigades been short on numbers

Our brigade is quite healthy on young members. We're made up of mainly 16 to 40 year olds. With the average age for the last strike team being 25.

i've always wanted to get involved, just too time poor to make a commitment to it

How does it actually work? I've always wondered. Do people take time off work to do it?

I had to take three days off work during the heat wave due to fire fighting. Fires don't happen every day of the week, so there's not usually much of a need to take time off work. Some employers are really good and let staff take it out of sick leave, but some employers don't even let their staff sacrifice work for CFS at all.

What about weekends?

After work hours?

Well theoretically, I'm on call 24/7. Majority of the fires I attended over the heat wave were night shift. Tuesday last week, I was on the fire truck from 5pm until 10am Wednesday morning. That was two separate fires. Same on New Years Eve, I was on a fire truck from 7pm 31st December until 9am 1st of January. Fires unfortunately don't discriminate public holidays or weekends. :)

They have to let you go in WA.

And is 'being on call' an obligation that you sign up for?

Or can you (for instance) say that you are available on Sundays only?

1. If you area operational yes
2. Just rock up when you can make it to a callout

Next 6 days will test the fires that are have been burning for the last 2 weeks.

Technically, they do in SA as well. But if my guy who pays my bills says no, I'm going to listen to him.

You can dob them in if they say no

i dont think ive ever posted in this thread before but something happened to me just then and i feel i need to share.

I was taking a piss and a fly flew into my stream of piss and got absolutely smacked straight into the toilet water. Dead. Bang. Thought it was hilarious

Yep, sure will. Two of the major SA fires which have been burning for a couple of weeks, have today gotten out of control again. I hear they're sending in crews from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.

It's very concerning, our area which is currently relatively fire free is currently running on skeleton staff, with over half of our appliances up North. If there's any major fires in the area, getting appropriate number of fire trucks will be an issue.
