Would you rather be someone like Daniel Currie or say Tom Logan from Port and be on an AFL list for 8-10 years for less than 100 games with little chance of gaining any other sort of qualifications in that time only to have to re-establish yourself in the work force in your early 30s or someone who is on an AFL list for a shorter amount of time, cut in their early 20s with plenty of time to gain other education or qualifications?

In short would you rather have your dream end early allowing you to fall back to the more mundane or would you prefer to hold on to that dream as long as possible? I sometimes wonder how difficult it would be for those type of journeyman footballers who aren't on the ridiculous money of the superstars to integrate into 'normal' life at a much later age than everyone else.

Dan Currie is studying Commerce at Melb Uni (so is JMac), so it's not as if there is no opportunity for them to set up an alternative career.

I agree, but I guess I was more talking about those that aren't so academically inclined. I mean it's hard enough to get a trade when you're younger let alone when you're 30+. More the most part I was just thinking about when players talk about life after footy and how a lot of them have never had a real job before they begin their AFL career. I imagine it would be difficult for the journeyman types that don't earn the superstar wages to do so. I know that in US sport and soccer there's discussion about players struggling when they finish their professional careers because they aren't used to a non-professional sportsman lifestyle and it can lead to serious mental health issues and associated substance abuse. I just imagine it would be even harder for the players that haven't accrued substantial wealth across their playing career.

Currie isn't a rookie so you'd think he's on reasonable money. Let's average it to $110k per season over his career.

That's 9x AFL seasons @ $110k = gross $990k. During that time he's completing tertiary studies, learning about the AFL system and business and gaining some media experience that will all be invaluable should he head into any of coaching/training/sports management later.

A reasonable return I'd say.
