Can we become whoever we want to be, or are there certain things about us that just 'are' and can't be changed?

(I don't have the answer to that question btw, I just found it interesting)
I haven't had a chance to really consider this, because it's a pretty big question.

My early thoughts are that I can't change my age or my genes, but I can change everything else, including my gender.

There are aspects of the mind and body that are beyond my comprehension (eg is a psychopath always a psychopath?) so I can really only speak for myself.

It's a very interesting question :thumbsu:

That opens the door to a lot of things that don’t affect the majority of people

But if those things don't affect the majority, then who cares? The only time it should be of concern to us is if a minority tries to impose its preferences on others, like radical extremists (convert or die). I'm not too sure if this is the case here.

The slippery slope argument is often used when there is no other argument.

Would you give up your right to have "male" on your birth certificate?
If you did, what is the worst possible thing that could happen?

It’s not a reason to do something either

There’s a survey here on the government site with 6000 votes 98% against it, so I guess it must be something that bothers the majority so we won’t do it then

6000/23,000,000 is a majority?

Also I really really don't like the whole 'majority rules' idea.

If 49,000,000/50,000,000 people believe the sky is purple. It doesn't mean its true.

If 2 wolves and a sheep voted on what to have for dinner...

Which is sadly what happens in the real world with minorities. .

What’s the worst thing that happens by leaving it there

Just to be clear I am not arguing against transgender though I don’t get it to be honest and it’s borderline ridiculous to me sorry

But I think the greens and labour pushing it down here instead of spending time and money on important issues is irritating.

This would cost a lot to change an administrative process to appease a small minority

But I respect the views of the people in this discussion so I’ll take them on board

So let’s legalise some illegal drugs

It’s happening anyway and doesn’t affect those who don’t use,

True, but where do you draw the line, can a minority decide what is good for the majority just because it does not affect them , according to the people pushing the agenda, or because it is the right thing?

You didn't answer the question.

It can cost me $ through wasted government spend for one

Everything the government spends money is wasted $ if you're not eligible/using that government service.

I don't go to school/Tafe/University, so any money spent on education is a waste of my $.

Um... drugs most definitely affect the families of those who use them. Addictions, not just drug addictions, have a huge cost to society, both in terms of the cost of treating them as well as lost productivity.

I'm not sure if you can compare allowing a small number of people not to disclose their gender on their birth certificate to legalising illegal drugs.

(Yes, I know you just did, but I don't think it's a great comparison)

Tasmanians have more pressing problems. Like differentiating between Darryls.

We've just been talking about treating minorities with respect and you have to come in with that :p

Tasmanians aren't people.
