I think there is a middle ground though...people using 'free speech' as an excuse to be racist etc. is pathetic.
What is a racist, ive got friends from all religions and different countries, but if I don't like some things happening now in Australia, I will speak my mind. If I don't like what that rat in Aly says it doesn't make me a racist.

Of course.

IMO it's not your opinion of him nor your willingness to communicate that dislike of him which would be deemed inappropriate. It's the phrasing, terminology and wording you use which can be seen to have been rooted in a racial profile (i.e. discriminatory). So using terms such as "terrorist lover" and "refugee do gooder" makes it seem as though race/ethnicity/religion may very well have been motivating factors for using such terms (i.e. you may not have used that terminology if it was a white middle class person instead IMO).

FWIW I'm sure you don't mean it to be racially motivated either. For some reason or another you just don't like the guy (& it's not just because you deem him to be different) which is fair enough.

I think it highlights an issue we have today in the more subtle/subconscious forms of discrimination based on race/religion/ethnicity/gender etc. Not deliberate. Not planned. Not aware/conscious of how it could be construed. But none-the-less, based on a profile of difference which we find unsettling for some unknown (ingrained?) reason.

I find myself thinking back to things I've said & thought and ask myself how that could have been based in discrimination or vilification.

E.g. Assuming the receptionist is the well dressed woman & not the well dressed man standing at the front desk.

Or using terms like "disabled people" instead of people living with disabilities.

Or using generalizations like "they're so good at that aren't they?" (Bruce talking about aboriginal players)

There are so many instances where discrimination can occur without it being deliberate or you even conscious to the fact. But you are still discriminating based on some feature or the other. That is one area which I think as a society we need to ensure we don't ignore on our way to smashing negative old habits and old ways of thinking and move toward the more inclusive, interconnected society of the future.

Anyone ever lost a big toe nail? After a long bowling spell couple games back my toe nail was bleeding quite bad. The nail died but stayed on the toe. Attached in 1 corner. Last night it totally peeled away from the nail bed. Everything ive read seems to contradict things. Will it grow if bandaged or does it need air. Got a game tomorrow so plan on padding and bandaging. Anyone experience the same?

Apologies mate I wasn't trying to imply you were racist, it was just a comment in general.

I've had the same from bowling and from memory it's a bit of both...obviously have it bandaged when you need to wear socks but if you have a chance to give it some air then do that periodically too.

That's the thing, I'm pretty sure that all of us have done that at one time or another. Of course we should treat everyone with respect, but it doesn't mean we have to keep apologising every time we say something that might offend people.

I'm going to have to disagree with this.
Personally, I don't buy the argument that comments people make create division. If that were the case we must have had a very fragile society to begin with, and I don't believe that is the case. In fact I would argue the contrary, allowing people to speak their mind is a good thing. Free speech includes the freedom to offend. Yes, it means people might say things that we don't like occasionally, but it's far better than the alternative IMO.

You have made an assumption about what I wrote that is incorrect.
I am all for people saying whatever they like.
The same people that scream 'free speech' are the loudest to complain when 'free speech' is used against them.
No problems calling Waleed Aly a terrorist lover (that's free speech)...but....someone calls them XXXXX then how dare they (apparently that's not free speech).

Really? You don't believe comments create divisions? You are either being disingenuous or you are completely naive.
Society is already divided.
It is not always a bad thing to create divisions, especially when the purpose is to have a sensible discussion.
If the sole purpose is to put shit on the other side, as is often the case...that is where we create issues for ourselves.

Kind of defeated your own point there.

Yeah, you won't find any argument from me on that point.
