If you're actually going to move permanently then find a very good map of where the floods impacted last time, and avoid those areas. Brisbane is one giant floodplain.

Thank you for the suggestions, way too early to determine anything, and just trying to find someplace where I won't get stabbed / car stolen.

I've only visited once, but I reckon you'd want to avoid any areas affected by Olympic infrastructure construction or related transport closures between a potential home and your work location.
