No, replacing a knee used to have a very limited life span (i.e. 15 years (less if you are overweight)) and you could only have 2 at most before the bone will not longer hold; so doing if before you are 55 or 60 almost always guarantees you will require a wheelchair for mobility. It also depends on bone density (I think), and what the specific issue is...

But if you're not happy with the outcome your doctor is providing, get a second opinion from a knee specialist! Just look up one convenient to you and ask for a referral.

NOTE: My information is now at least 10 years old, so is likely out of date... but I would definitely get a second opinion! :)
Sadly i don’t have any cartilage left, all bone on bone, so may not help with me. I hope Bedford gets relief with having one though

I’m leading the pub’s tipping on 56. Would be nice to win $1k. Need money for concerts.

So you don't have private ? sorry to intrude but i can share your pain .
Can you go to your local member , no doubt a LNP person
No I don’t have private. Being LNP, I’m likely to burn his office down.

I was told that the knee replacements lasted 15 years or so, but I agree, if you need one, you need one

I just had a quick squizz and it seems that knee replacements have greatly improved over the last 10 years. They are expected to last 15 - 20 years and you can have as many as you want.

That being said, I would be asking my Dr to explain why I can't have one? Sure it's an 18 month wait on the public system, but why not go on the list today, rather than in 5 years time. I would definitely be asking for a referral to a specialist, as the call should not be made by GP. And if you're not happy with the outcome, get a second opinion...

Thanks for the advice. Will mention it after I get my brain scan results back. The human body is a fascinating thing. Can do miracles but when it breaks down, can give ya grief

David Rhyse Jones just had both done at once , i messaged him and said did you have private and he said no , but then went on it for 12 Months , he reckons it's the best thing he's ever done . My clubs Physio tells me to get on an exercise bike to build muscles around the knee , but im in agony after it .

Make sure you take the recommended medications and do the rehab after... the single biggest cause of failed operations is patients failing to follow the rehab protocols. The operation by itself is not enough, you absolutely must follow the rehab protocol. Ask any sports doctor or physio...

Do NOT say:
  • I don't want to take the meds in case I get hooked, or
  • I don't feel I need them 'cause I can manage the pain, or
  • I'm feeling fine so I don't need to do the exercises, or
  • I'm not in pain, so I'm going for a walk, or carrying that box, or using stairs, etc., etc., etc.,
  • My knee is working fine now so I don't need to do anything more.
All of these things lead to failed outcomes. Follow the rehab program exactly as it's written to get the best results.

Someone (probably Medicare) is paying all these people hundreds and/or thousands of dollars for their medical expertise! Use it...

I cannot tell you how many failed operations i have dealt with because people got up when they were told to rest, didn't do the exercise they were told to, or stopped the meds because they decided they didn't need them for one reason or another!

And yes, Rhys is right... they are life changing! Being pain free and able to move freely is a really big deal!

My wife had both her hips replaced, recovering from recent one still, she is 39, 40 in October.

Waiting list would be shit so just paid for private both times, we have put extra in super and she took it out of there to fund it, maybe an option sometimes

My mother had her hip done and she woke up during surgery and heard all the docs and nursing talking and their tools. She couldn’t feel anything though. I haven’t woken up during surgery yet and I’ve had 4 on the knee and 1 on the ankle.

Are you a surgeon Kirkswan?
Lol! No, an administrator...

Just spent many years working in personal injury/disability, and dealing with the aftermath of failed surgeries...

And don't get me wrong, Drs do make mistakes, but upwards of 95% of failed surgeries are the result of failed rehab.

Fair call.

My last surgery didn’t work, it was a full knee reco. I even told the surgeon I felt the kneecap move sideways while recovering. Some surgeons are stubborn.

The last one I had for my ankle was nice on the other hand and haven’t had much issues with my ankle apart from the arthritis.

Your advice has proven useful though thank you

Have you seen our recipes thread, GB?

No I haven't, but will look into it after the game. Are there any slow cooker recipes?
