Given i reckon the 09 season was the strongest this century with two great teams that pushed each other...will go Saints 09 as best.
Height of the great Geelong team with much to prove after missing in 08, Ablett still there, all at peak, against another mob full of guns that would win a flag any other yr. Well matched, tough hard footy between two dominant teams during the season.
Saints 09
Pies 11
Saints 10
Hawks 12
Geel 08

Geelong of 08 is the obvious one, but the Saints in 09 would be thereabouts as well. Such a dominant team, lost two games by single digits if I recall. They were just unlucky to encounter a Geelong team in the wet who refused to lose.

Sydney in 2014 is another.

Yet the OP put Sydney 2014 last just ahead of Fro 13 and WC 15. A bias against Hawthorn?

Perhaps why BF numbers are dropping off.

Without being biased, and it's nothing to big note about, but Cats 08 were a vastly superior team to the fading Lions 04. One loss prior to the GF, clearly on top of the ladder ALL year, >160%. Wasted season, but taking nothing away from Hawks.

The only reason you had a higher percentage is because half the comp was half as bad as it was compared to our 08 era.

I'd say if our 08 side played your 11 side 20 times over. We would've won around 18 of those.
Wouldn't have thought so.

Your 08 side couldn't even get within 14 goals of our 08 side.

As some have already stated it's easy to forget how dominant our 2011 side was throughout the season.

Agree with your point about the 08 Cats being better, but I'm not sure why everyone keeps saying the 2004 Lions were "fading". The finished the season with a comparable record to previous years and were favourites going into the GF. They went into the grand final on a run of form that read:

-45 point win over prelim finalists St Kilda in round 21
-113 point win over North in round 22
-80 point win over prelim finalists St Kilda in the QF
-9 point win over Geelong at the MCG

They also managed a 141 point win just a few weeks prior to this run. They faded on the day after holding a 1 point lead at half time, and some would argue that was partly due to their age struggling to cope with the scheduling. But there was no indication that they were a struggling or fading side throughout the year.

Good points.
I forgot how good that team was; but have always been a massive fan of the Lions from 2000-2004

The extra day cost them in the end I still believe. Which is a travesty really.

Clearly the Saints of 09.

The top team all year, won 20 in a row, won 3/4 quarters of the Grand final and lost the match... poor buggers

In our defense I don't think anyone expected them to win

We were lucky to have the season we did, West Coast in the elimination final had Judd with a groin injury playing in the goal square and cousins pulling his hammy in a tight final. We pumped North in the prelim so had some 'false hope' but in reality we were lucky to have made that GF, Geelong would have bet anyone on the day, but we just got annihilated.

I've always seen our 2002 fourth placed 13-9 team as better than our 2003 second placed 15-7 team. 2002 felt more like a team effort, and the journey was so much better throughout the season. 2003 was pretty much Nathan Buckley carrying the team through everything. 2002>2003 any day.

Collingwood 2011 carries the burden of having a team better than them, but they absolutely steamrolled their way through the home-and-away season and as such, I'd place them second behind Geelong 2008. I respect those who disagree though as I think 2011 was a weak year in comparison to other years in the same time period.

Our home and away results were as follows: 75, 87, 28, 71, 30, 48, -3, 43, 52, 57, 88, 6, 41, 117, 19, 54, 74, 138, 19, 18, 80, -96

i thought Collingwood 2011 were destined to go back to back and i used to watch them to enjoy the excellence until the last 3rd of the season when something happened and they dropped off.

It made it so hard to assess their status during the finals; based on the first half of the year i would rate them better than Geelong 2008.

I really think the game plan just became too difficult for the players to sustain, both physically and mentally. Some boredom probably crept in against the lesser sides as well (there were a few victories that were little more than glorified training runs that year).

It's hard to stay "up" at that level of intensity for 5-6 months of the H&A season, then finals, when you've already been to the top of the mountain the year prior. Even so, they were just a goal down at 3/4 time in the GF, and were one bad final quarter away from another flag.
