Dusty is such a strange player to try and rate. Objectively his H&A performances are that of a gun player but not close to the greatest of all time. For example he's had the same number of All Australians and Brownlows as Shane Crawford and he's never brought up in these discussions.

But then Dusty is almost certainly the best finals player of all time. He's probably played 50 less dominant games but ~5 more dominant finals than any of the others on this list.

Does that make him number 1? Maybe it does.

Suggest you have a closer look at the finals performances of the other players.

The gap in finals performances will be much closer than you think...

All the other 5 have had good finals performances as well. One difference is Martin has never lost a Grand Final while all others have tasted defeat at least once. Still he definitely should be rated as the best finals performer out of the six.

His home and away performances however are underrated imo because he has mainly played a Attacking Mid-Forward and many point out that he has only 4 AA.

Yet, as I pointed out in one of the Dusty threads he has been very consistent in this role and has the second highest number of seasons with 20+ Possesions and 1 goal per game out of players who played in the 21st century behind only Boomer Harvey.

So he has been consistent, but just played a more Fwd-Mid role.

Still no logical reason to rate him above GAJ who has had 5 seasons of 30+1 albeit one being the famous injury shortened 2014 season, and he has done it both at Geelong and GC.

This is it.

If you had to pick 1 out of the list to play in a grand final, you can’t pick any of his peers if you are being serious.

he will also move into 6th in total brownlow votes all time, not bad for a bloke who “ coasted ” Through home and away.

That 14 season was ridiculous though 32 and 1.6

Judd had 57 disposals, 34 contested possessions, 19 clearances and 13 inside 50s across his two grand finals in the good old fashioned rover role. And this was when his burst of pace out of and through congestion was blistering. Without him that West Coast side lose by 5 goals in the first grand final and don't win the second.

Voss turned the game in the second half of the 2001 grand final against a mighty opponent with several defining moments, then was BOG (sorry Bucks) in the nail biting grand final a year later, willing them over the line off his own back.

These two and GAJ are your starting midfield in any hypothetical grand final. Dusty would be on a forward flank and would probably kick 5 goals with that midfield ahead of him. But it's ludicrous to ignore the talents of the 3 that are clearly ahead of him - as shown by the posts in this thread.

One may argue that GC's midfield was shit and he had to all by himself.

IMO, Even more impressive are his 2009 & 10 seasons, even take in to account Geelong's high possesion style , when he did it in a dominant team surrounded by players like Bartel, Selwood, Corey, Kelly, Stevie J & Chappy. 33.8 & 1.2 in 2009. 31.5 & 1.8 in 2010

Someone had to do the tally. 52 lists so far.

6 points for #1....1 point for #6 for those who posted lists. Here's where we stand:

1. Gary Ablett Jr (285 points)
2. Chris Judd (219 points)
3. Michael Voss (187 points)
4. Dustin Martin (153 points)
5. Nathan Buckley (125 points)
6. James Hird (125 points)

A very clear number 1 for Ablett (biggest distance between places is from him to 2nd), Judd with a comfortable lead over Voss who has a comfortable lead over Martin. Dusty the best of the rest after the big 3. A dead heat between Hird and Buckley.

I'd say a pretty fair reflection of where each player stands, although I find it hard to split Hird and Martin.

Buckley the only one who could have 46 possessions as a midfielder, kick 6 goals as a forward and tear Carey apart as a defender.

I find that hard to believe. Others have won in a losing side.
Votes were cast halfway through the last quarter -3 of the 5 judges later admitted they would have changed their vote to Voss at the end of the game if they could. The decision was so bad that the AFL changed the rule to votes being cast after the came from 2003 onwards.

Interesting take. from my memory of that game wasn't much at all between Bucks and Voss. Just checked stats and Bucks had 32 disposals, 28 kicks, Voss 26 disposals, 22 kicks. both kicked a goal, both instrumental in their teams performances.

if Bucks was the best field kick you've ever seen you would think he would have done something with his 28 kicks?
This is why looking up stats and not watching games causes problems. Buckley played a very good game, BOG may have been close between the two early in the last quarter, and at that stage and Collingwood were in the lead.
In the last Quarter Voss physically dominated the Collingwood team, they folded under his wrecking ball style and he won the Lions the game.

It was such a terrible decision that the rule was changed after that game - votes must now be given at the end of the game. That pretty much tells you everything you need to know.

This is true

Buckley didn’t touch it in the last quarter , Voss willed his team over the line .

Buckley tore Voss apart that day when they were one on one in the third to the stage Matthews screamed 'For f#$#$ sake will soneone get Voss off Buckley'. Voss was running around with a midfield supported by Black, Lappin, Power, Aker etc. Buckley almost dragged a very poor Collingwood team over the line on his own shoulders. It was a herculean performance by Buckley. Voss played a loose man behind play in the last quarter. Imagine the criticism if Nick Daicos did that. Go back and watch the game properly. Buckley was clearly best on ground.

Well that certainly explains why the judges said they got it wrong and the rule was changed after that debacle...........

Maybe take off the black and white glasses.

3 of the 5 judges had not awarded Voss 1 vote halfway through the last quarter. He wasn't even in their best 3 players then suddenly in 10 minutes he is best on ground. You might want to have a look at how many Brisbane players named Buckley as Best on Ground. You have no idea. I trust the opinion of the opponents who played not someone like you who wasn't even at the game.
