attempt at the Arctic Monkeys:
1. Suck it and See
2. AM
3. Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
4. Humbug
5. Favourite Worst Nightmare
6. Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino

The first five are all classics to me, and the latest is a welcome decent return, even if well behind 5th for now.

One of those bands where if someone picked any of these as their favourite, or ranked them in reverse, I'd be fine with that, it's all good.

Too early to rate TBH+C for mine.

However,

For me,

1. Humbug
2. Favourite worst nightmare
3. Whatever people say I am, That's what I'm not
4. AM
5. Suck it and see

I think TBH+C will fit between 2 and 4 for me. Not sure yet.

I won't ever love one of their albums like I loved Whatever People say I am, but it's not something that I ever want to listen to now. I think TBH+C will probably finish in #2 for me.

Time will tell, TBH+C is such an absorbing listen, easy to get lost in, but the other five are so dearly etched and therefore hard to match.

Humbug and WPSIA, TWIN are the ones that I seem to return to most often in recent years. Always have a copy of them in the car somewhere.

Interesting then that neither of them are in your top 2, instead, replaced by newer albums, that you have seemingly tired of.

I'll add in some Wings.

1. Band On The Run
2. Venus & Mars
3. Red Rose Speedway
4. London Town
5. Back To The Egg
6. Wings At The Speed of Sound
7. Wings Wild Life

And some Fountains of Wayne.

1. Welcome Interstate Managers
2. Fountains of Wayne
3. Utopia Parkway
4. Traffic & Weather
5. Out-Of-State Plates*
6. Sky Full Of Holes

*A b-sides and rarities compilation which was big enough to comprise a 2CD set, so it's worth including.

And some Sherbet.

1. The Skill
2. Sherbet
3. Defying Gravity
4. Howzat
5. Life....Is For Living
6. Slipstream
7. On With The Show
8. Shaping Up
9. Photoplay
10. Time Change....A Natural Progression

And some Nik Kershaw.

1. 15 Minutes
2. Human Racing
3. The Riddle
4. Ei8ht
5. To Be Frank
6. The Works
7. You've Got To Laugh
8. Radio Musicola

As you say with WPSIA, I just haven't felt the itch as much for those ones yet. A several years hiatus served that album well for me, put it into perspective, and probably will the other three. Humbug was the sole grower, didn't come to love it until early 2011, whereas all the others were instant hits with me and basically played out, so Humbug always returned as something with more to unpack.

Humbug is one of those albums which is just a really great album. Always ready to be thrown on and receive high replay value, but I think they've hit greater heights on some later albums. Suck it and See was one of the most memorable releases of the decade for me.

Who knows, maybe we'll all have this worked out in 15-20 years after a couple phases with each.

Yes, as time goes by, the more clear it is that Kevin Moore was responsible for the ambience of Dream Theater. He was keeping it real and maintaining the balance. He also added a certain classical restraint to their music. Sherinian was interesting. Jordan Rudess is too much like Petrucci - they egg each other on, it's like a pissing contest. Metropolis PTII was already half written with Sherinian before Rudess joined - that explains why that album sounds the way it does. Much as I admire Rudess for his incredible talent, he's a bit too much for DT.

Exactly. That's why it blows me away when people claim that DT is evolving its sound to go with the times. If anything, to me that sound they have now is quite hackneyed. There's nothing fresh about it. I'm so sick of that triple-tracked/oversaturated/EMG/dual-rectifier concrete cutting guitar sound. And Musicman guitars suck. Bring back the Ibanez! The sound on Awake is raw and perfect. And there are so many great clean/melodic/serene moments on there. That's what made DT great, the contrasts. They've lost their contrast. Now they do ball breaking, and faux angst ridden calm (you always know there's another explosion coming). It's almost like the whole band needs to be checked in with a psychologist and asked why they living inauthentic lives. They've lost the poetry, the magic. I honestly think they should retire because every album they put out diminished their legacy.

Spot on.

Sound, tone, melody, ambiance has gone missing. First listen of the new album is just more soulless w***ery and very forgettable

The thing is, their new album is easily their best since ADTOE which I absolutely loved. It’s solid all the way through. It definitely deserves to be above everything else.

SC is an album I used to think was criminally underrated but then I realised I hate Forsaken, Prophets of War is boring and Ministry for lost souls is a sick four minute instrumental breakdown surrounded by ten minutes of rubbish. Splitting In the Oresence of enemies also detracts from it - who they think they are? Pink Floyd?

That leaves The dark eternal night constant motion and repentance to hold it up. Decent songs but not enough to save it from falling lower.

BC&SL can eat every dick in existence.
A rite of passage is excellent. Everything else is average or s**t.

I disagree. I think the keyboard itself is quite good on the most recent album. The guitar work is great as always and the bass work is up there with the best. Mangini still doesn’t quite sound anything but stale but he does have some great moments like the intro to paralyzed and Pale Blue Dot. I don’t understand this constant criticism of them being commercial and over produced. Everything is these days and they’re still miles better than anything else currently being released.

I will agree the ambience has gone missing. I highly doubt we’ll ever hear that back. That left with Moore if you ask me.

"The Elder" sits inbetween a time when Hardcore fans were disillusioned by the direction the band had taken since "Love Gun", and the return to Heavier material on "Creatures of the Night". "The Elder" was released after a "Rock" album - "Dynasty" and an almost Pop Album "Unmasked". "The Elder" was a concept album, almost an attempt by KISS to emulate the success of Pink Floyd's "The Wall". Fans hated it. I love the album because the material and the musicianship is far removed from "Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll". Bob Ezrin produced the album, and had worked his magic on "Destroyer".

As for anything KISS has released since "Psycho Circus" - "Sonic Boom" and "Monster" are horrible. Easily their two worst albums.

I think he has added significantly to the bands direction and sound. I loved Kevin Moore's songwiting on "Awake". "Space Dye Vest" is a masterpiece. Derek Sherinian is more of a guitarist that happens to play Keyboards (Sons of Apollo debut). I think Rudess filled the role really well, but it was only after Mike Portnoy left that his songwriting cam to the fore. He went from no credited songwriting, to co-writing almost all the songs on "A Dramatic Turn of Events". I would like to thing that Rudess is in the very top bracket of keyboard players worldwide. He might not the original Keyboard player, but he has contributed significantly since joining.

DT can't write vocal melodies anymore. It's very monotonous now - that alone has taken the Dream out of Dream Theater. It used to be full of light and shade. James LaBrie doesn't have much left in his voice now - DT's endless touring and long sets has ruined him. Portnoy had a point when he asked them if they could take a break. They were spent and devoid of inspiration. The music hasn't improved since he left, it's got worse. The whole band would have been better off having a break and coming back with renewed energy. DT's relentless cycle of album>touring>album>touring is not because they are creatively energetic. They are energetic in terms of band activity, but they haven't been creative for a long time. I think they showed themselves to be a bunch of assholes by telling Portnoy he's out of the band if they take a year off. He was a founding member. They could have given him that much. Mangini adds nothing to the band - even if he is a technically better drummer. They still should take a year or two off - and get Portnoy back.

I dont think Ignition has aged well, the production was pretty meh at the time even though a few songs still kicked ass regardless like Dirty Magic and Session. I can respect people having it higher who grew up with it but i went back to most of the stuff Pre-Smash once Ipods started to become a thing and i was able to check whole discography much easier.

I bought Ignition shortly after Smash came out. Loved it then, listened to it quite recently and still love it. Sessions and Dirty Magic are great, but so too is Burn It Up, Kick Him When He's Down. It's definitely less slick than their later albums.
