Who do you think is the best coach in the game at the moment? I'd have to say Blight for #1. I know he's always had a good list, but his record with Geelong and Adelaide is outstanding. Here's my list....

1. Blight
2. Wallace
3. Daniher
4. Malthouse
5. Pagan
6. Matthews
7. Eade
8. Thompson
9. Frawley
10. Sheedy
11. Britain
12. Judge
13. Ayres
14. Schwab
15. Drum
16. Williams

BBP, wasn't this topic done a couple of weeks ago?.

As far as the best coach, How can you rate Blight as number 1. He hasn't coach for over 12 months and in his last year in Adelaide he lost the plot. The best coach at the moment is the coach of the last premiership team and thats Kevin Sheedy.

BPP I really think your dreaming on this one!

The two best coaches in the league by far are sheeds and pagan.

NOBODY else is even close.

malthouse is past it.
Blight was just damn lucky. TWICE
Mathews is good, but not great.
Wallace is very good but has now missed the boat with the doggies.

As for the rest, well... they just make up the numbers.

This has been done already. I can't agree with Sheedy at number 10. He would be in my Top 3.

He lost the plot when he had Wallace at 2 and Daniher at 3.

Wallace is the most overrated coach.
Daniher has had 1 and a half good years at most.

Sheedy and Pagan have to be 1 and 2 but don't know which is better.
Possibly Pagan because he's got North to 7 Prelim finals in a row.

There are elite coaches, in no particular order. Sheedy, Wallace, Pagan, Daniher are the only ones with a realistic chance at success(I.E. premiership). Malthouse is the most over-rated coach in the league. Alves is the best not currently coaching.

Blind Freddy would have at least three flags from that West Coast Era... Malthouse proves that good players make some coaches... and Pagan proves some coaches can make average footballers into champions...

Blight was not damn lucky, but rather it was his coaching moves that were a key factor in deservedly winning the Adelaide Crows two Premierships. He also lost three GF so maybe he was unlucky then. While he might not be No. 1, Blight is a coach that produces results and should be in the top three.

I'm dreaming? I think you people are dreaming!

First off, this is a list of who I'd prefer to have as coach now, not who was better 5 or 10 years ago. I did take into consideration past records because you'd have to to sum up which coach you'd want.

Now, Blight has gotta be number 1. He's taken Geelong into the 89', 92' and 94' Grand Finals and getting them into finals and prelims in all the years in between. He took the out of sorts Crows to 2, yes 2 premierships in a row when noone rated them a chance. Some of the moves he made in those Grand Finals changed the game. The Ellen move to full forward was genius and unexpected in 98'. I was there for both of the crows premierships and you could sense that Blight was the mastermind behind it all. Just wait and see what he does with StKilda this year.

Now, as for people thinking Sheedy is #1. What a load of bullshit! Was it just over a year ago when Bombers fans were whinging about him, wishing he'd leave? In my opinion he's always had a VERY good list to deal with and didnt do enough with it.

Terry Wallace in my opinion is easily #2.
He took over the Bulldogs after Joyce, changed their image and turned a dieing and untalented team into a tough hardworking group to 4 finals series in a row. He never had an overly talented list to work with and was very unlucky to not make the Grand Final in 97' and 98'. Wallace is revolutionary, always thinking of new things. I'd kill to have him at Melbourne.

Daniher, much the same as Wallace. He's been there for 3 years and taken Melbourne to a Prelim (against the eventual premiers) and a Grand Final. If you've ever heard him speak you'd know he's a great coach.

And, Pagan is good, just behind the ones I already mentioned.

I think my list is perfect, anyone with half a brain would agree.

hey big poppa, sheeds has won 4 flags in about 17 years which is one every 4 years roughly, any club would be happy with that in a competition of that many teams plus he nearly always makes the finals with his team, he has done very well, do you know what ? I reckon youre just still bitter about the grand final when we thrashed you

By this list, youve just proved how little you know about football...go follow soccer or something.
For a start...how can you rate Williams last, with Drum above him?? What has Drum done that Williams hasnt?? Williams got Port into the finals in his first year...Drum has done sweet FA. How you canr ate Thompson above Sheedy astounds me!! Sheedy is one of the greatest coaches of all time, has come off the most succesful year in the history of the game, and you rate him 10th!!!
You obviously hate Port and Essendon

<snip crap>

you are a fool poppa pump. Blight took crows to two very good falgs, but as soon as they started losing he sooked off like the lying loser he is. He cant handle himself being with a losing team. You watch...if saints dont make the finals this year or next, he will quit, because he doesnt like begin associated with a losing team.

Wallace...uses dirty tactics to win matches. Has had very good lists the last few years and didnt make a grand final when he probably should of...twice!
Daniher is an alright coach, has done some great things with melbourne.

This would be my list:

1. Sheedy
2. Pagan
3. Matthews
4. Daniher
5. Eade
6. Wallace
7. Blight
8. Malthouse
9. Frawley
10. Williams

You're right Big Poppa, a lot of Essendon supporters were wishing he'd leave at the end of 1998, myself included. The Essendon game plan, especially the short chipping in defence frustrated all Bomber supporters. But Sheedy's coaching in 1998 was completely different to that of 1999 and 2000. That is one reason why he is so good, and has been for so long. The game plan he introduced in these years is second to none (well with the possible exception of Pagen and Wallace)

Also, the fact that Essendon do have such a good list only supports Sheedy's ability as a coach. He has a brilliant eye for talent and plays a big role in recruiting.

Some of those coaches hve not had long enough to be rated alongside the others.

Schwab for example deserves longer before being rated - and most of you put him towards the bottom, Yet Thompson near the top

Hello - Hawthorn beat Geelong twice in the only tow times the coaches have gone head to head. Thompson ran up the white flag before the final and played some has been who shouldn't have been selected. Schwab was dissapointed to lose against North. Both need more time but the Indications are that Schwab is better

Jub Jub, Ok so maybe Malthouse has coached two premierships-I can remember the damage that he did and the state he left the doggies in '89. So far at Collingwood he has managed to lose another forward(he has a problem with forwards ie Beasley, Sumich)and take them to 2nd last place. I reckon I could've coached wce to premierships with the players they had.

Yeah, Sumich was a REAL problem, oh and Cummings too! (bloody coleman medallists). The Eagles were a rabble before Malthouse arrived and he didn't sign big interstate names, he did it with mostly WA players. The guy is a true legend.
