A lot of people think he's a gun, but I'm still to be convinced. Can provide the team with run through the lines, but skills are questionable. A good preseason and an injury free 2006 will help me make up my mind.

He had a very good season this year, even though it was ended short with injury. We still need to see if he can produce the same work rate and effictivness next season.......He has proven he has a bright future at hawthorn if he can keep healthy he will be a leader of the club.

his skills are pretty good IMO... definately one of the better users of the ball on our team. We missed him alot when he went down.

Rose coloured classes? There are two players in our team who can hit a target more often than not, Hodge and Crawf, and the rest, Bateman included, are questionable. He does have skill, but he is inconsistent in his use of it.

What you think of Chance Bateman?
SILK.

Don't forget the domino effect folks (whatever you play, the next one will look at least a little bit the same; or knock one over, others go down...). The Hawthorn team of the 80's made some fringe players look very good because the opposition had no-one left to put on them, and because the core of the team was doing everything right. At the moment, we suffer from patterns of poor decision making and poor skill, which reinforce each other. When two blokes are running to the wrong places, it's very hard to deliver effectively; when your only real way to get the ball is to run all day as hard as you can, it's more difficult to finish effectively.

Chance is an outstanding player whose every season to date has been dashed by forces beyond his control. A leader.

I like his crumbing attributes. Must admit though Chance needs to sharpen his skills and be cleaner at the ball collecting the pill close to the turf. He is working on that aspect .... and when he gets it right with consistency he will arrive at the dynamo status his potential suggests.

He loves the club, is popular amongst the other players and is great mates with Buddy, Willo and Harry.

Agree with this. Bateman's skills are among the better at the club but he does turn the ball over more often than he should. A reason for this, I believe, is that he often kicks the ball while running at full pace. When he has time he uses the ball very well.

As it is, I reckon he's one of our most important players. He's one of the only midfielders we have with genuine pace who is capable of breaking the lines and carrying the ball. While his role is predominately one of an outside midfielder, he's a tough little bugger who's tackling is as good as any at the club. Very well respected by his peers. Important player.

Someone mentioned questionable skills? What are you on, his skills are pretty good i thought?
Night Wolf you just questioned his skills... "pretty good i think???". Chance Bateman is not as good as you think he is. He is pretty consistant when he is fit and healthy but consistancy and questionable skills means you are going to have a player who consistantly misses a target.. so i think overrated.

I reckon he's very much an improved player, one whould go on and play 150 plus games. Very tragic what happned to his sister a couple of years ago.

Chance Bateman will be crucial to the Hawks midfield set up this year. He is fearless, quick, has some of that typical Aboriginal magic, and is due to have a decent crack at a full season. He can get his own footy, but will be even more use as a run past outside mid with Sam, Jordan and Hodgey feeding him. We really missed him in the second half of 2005!

Having met and spoke to him at a function last year, he will also be a great role model for guys like Buddy, Willo and Harry, because he was articulate and very polite in his dealings with the supporters. And that was after a bad loss to the Pies!

Spot on GoHawks :)

The only thing I wish I could change with Chance is his height. Just a bit small, but he has a ton of courage and sets an example that others, bigger & stronger can follow.. for if the little guy can do it, so can I.

He was a massive loss this year (2005), I think we missed him more than just about anyone. We just didn't have anyone else with his sort of pace in the midfield. Hodge, Mitchell and Lewis can get the ball better than just about any other combination around but because they lack the pace to run the ball forward, they end up having to kick or handball when an option might not be there.

So based on my theory that pace is the vital missing ingredient in our midfield, Chance is one of the most important players we have.

On the plus side, we'd have to have some of the quickest KP players around! (Croad, Buddy etc)

I agree R.M.

With Chance on one wing and maybe Clinton Young on the other, that pace and carry might even help Willo win the Coleman this year!!!
