That was the big fella's fourth goal...

Your supporters would drown your board if Hooker had kept Franklin to two goals like Bower.

Hampson and Carrazzo are defenders?

No one bagged Hampson and Thornton.

Bower was playing injured out of necessity in that final.

Thornton is a third tall, so he had to play on Brown because we had no one else available for selection.

Austin, Jamison, Browne, Grigg, Armfield, Joseph and Bower stood up against the Saints.

Jamison is better than Duffield and Broughton.

Hampson and Carrazzo are defenders?

This from footywire:

Andrew Carrazzo
#44 Carlton Blues
Age: 26yr Games: 99 Born: December 15, 1983
Height: 187cm Weight: 85kg Position: Defender
Last Drafted: Round 1, Pick #2 2003 Rookie Draft

I'll think you'll find there's an article there about his 20+ disposals on the night.

If it wasn't Hampson going into defence to help close down Brisbane's talls in Brown, Bradshaw and Brennan, then who did? With o'Hailpin, Austin and Jamieson out it's not like you had much else to draw on. As I posted it was "iirc", quite happy to be corrected if I'm wrong.

No one bagged Hampson and Thornton.

There was plenty of criticism of your defence (e.g., http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=628075, or this "Our back line is in need of serious help. I have been watching these boards now for quite some time and there is always a lot of talk about how we need to acquire a CHF, FF etc." from Kouta70).

You'll also see that there's criticism of Thornton being too slow to match Brown on the lead which begs the question - if he's too small to stand the big forwards, and not fast enough for the bigs, let alone the smalls, what really is he good for? This "third tall" line assumes that the opposition has a slow, shortish third forward that needs closing down .

Can't locate the posts criticising Hampson, would swear they were quite a number of them immediately after the loss, but I'll say I'm wrong and apologize.

You say Jamison is better but give no evidence.

Finally, (and not related to my initial post) Bower was as you say injured, but as you see from the link he too has many blues detractors.

Probably an annoying position to be in for the Dockers. They're ordinary midfield is young but definitely on the up where as the backline is the exact opposite: quality but will decline fast unless replacements are found in the next few compromised drafts.

On the bright side midfielders often develop pretty quickly, and most of our young mids have a season or two into them now, so hopefully they can really hit their straps while our backline is still at it's peak.

It is backline week after all..

B: Hayden McPharlin Grover
HB: Broughton Tarrant Duffield

Possibly Freo's strongest zone assuming McPharlin plays back. Bring on the critics!

Looks great on paper. However,

Hayden is injury prone and played just 8 games last year following on from 14 in 2008.

McPharlin is coming off a terrible year. Granted, he was thrown about the place but he really needs to lift.

Grover is another coming off a terrible year, also inexplicably thrown around in positions - again, need to lift.

Broughton, Tarrant and Duffield are highlights though.

Broughton and Tarrant are amongst the best in their resoective positions.

Duffield is a very handy rebounding defender who is probably expected to push into the middle.

As I said, on paper it looks great but there are some very big question marks over it.

well said.
i agree
Hayden is a fave, but your summary is spot on.
However we have as a group neglected Johnson, Suban & Mundy.
all 3 may play elsewhere on the field, but are also capable defenders.
i think Grover is past his best & may struggle for a game & i am ecstatic that Dodd has not been mentioned. he played nearly every game last year, but IMO he is not in the top 30 at the club.
but maybe Johnson will be CHF & Pav FF?

Not a fan of Grover, but i really do like the look of Broughton and especially Duffield. YOu have a couple of excellent, young, rebounding defenders there. Its the KPP backline spots that are your achillies heel, and i don't know if you can afford to play both Tarrant and/or McPharlin exclusively in defence.

Can you expand on your reasoning?

I think he meant one of them may be required forward in 2010.

Tarrant spent 95% of his time in the backline last year. McPharlin will be directly replaced by Pavlich. Mayne, Ballantyne,Headland and Johnson should return from injury with Bradley/Sandilands/Clarke all capable of playing forward, providing a multitude of options compared to 2009. McPharlin and Tarrant forward is not a good move.

Cool :thumbsu:

Playing Taz up front takes us back to 2008, Elvis to 2009.

Either move will be strongly resisted unless Pav, MJ and/or Mayne get injured, and even then it will be under sufferance.

to interpret for others, the dorks at onlydorksallowed.com aka dockerland call McPharlin Elvis & Michael Johnson MJ
i got banned from there years ago when i suggested that chris cuddly was not a head coach. at the time i was shouted down & eventually banned, only 2 have my thoughts later echoed by most Freo supporters.
freo fanatics is a better website for any real Freo fans

Might have picked it up from there, but haven't visited for aaggeeessssss since I found this site.

Harsh call on the Cuddles prediction, but banishment/derision is often the fate of prophets.

Fremantle's backline is about as good as their position on the ladder at the end of the 2009 season.

And they still finished near the bottom of the ladder. I will stick with the backline we had at Carlton. Although if we had Mcpharlin in our backline it would be great. But the rest of the Fremantle backline are simply WAFL class players.

nothing to add as usual... and it suggests that Carlton is filled with sub WAFL players. ;)

Jamison is better than Duffield and Broughton.

Wow.... big lulz. You can keep your better Jamison. You simply cannot watch any footy outside of your own side.
