A great win against the (till now) best side of 2018.
We defeated the reigning premiers, we have made the Grand Final to now play WCE.
Our chance has come, take the opportunity.

And as has been in some previous threads this is for analysis and rating all our players of the prelim final win.

Player Review

Jordan De Goey a terrific game, goals, bullocking, defeating by speed Rance, making a mess of the vaunted Richmond defence. Also missed a shot or two but overall a game of our bull.
  • Strong 8.
Brodie Grundy monstered the opposition, great work further and further into the game. Dominant and his roving goal was the sealer if still any doubt after Treloar's goal. Epic game and a huge key to our success this year.
  • Monster 9.
Tyson Goldsack did his job, does the 1% plays well, beat Riewoldt at times, though Jack did fight back. Overall did more that enough against a great player. Not much you can do about bulletin passes. Unsure that he gave that free away which the Tigers scored from, taking the game to 21 points. All heart and soul. Great clubman. Anything 5 to 6 for the game with the little things pushing up his score.
  • Dependable 6
Adam Treloar gets into the game, kicked a sealer, does many terrific things, seems to be working his way into solid form with him screaming out for the GF. Adds that pace and cheek in play. Did more than enough. Very good game.
  • Solid 7
Tom Langdon we don't make prelim level without him the way he's going. Just a terrific reader of flight. Terrific game. Did so much heavy lifting defence wise. Bless him. I miss Scharenberg and this guy has stepped up as one of our twin pillars down back. Loved his game. And seems to just belong.
  • Terrific 9
Scott Pendlebury a game of a general, outstanding setting up the win in the first quarter particularly. Directs traffic if you watch carefully. The most under rated star in the game. Cut Richmond up so many ways.
  • Captain's 8
Taylor Adams as good a game as I can recall from Taylor. Gets the tough ball, leads by example, does everything required to keep churning out great play. Barely errors, one or two cute things but super game. So tough in the right way.
  • Hard 9
James Aish another game another job done well, curtailing their small forward types. Did his job, mainly solid and dependable. Be super unlucky to be stepped aside. Has skill too. Goes about his role with no fuss or fanfare.
A 5 to 6 game overall. Extra point for his obvious role play. Also earnt Dusty ire, loved that he got under his skin.
  • Capable 6
Chris Mayne did his role. Sold candy to Tigers. Hardly an error, unsure it was holding the ball. Keeps going to role. His confidence grew. Might be his best game for us. Well done to him, he earnt it the hard way.
A game worth 8 in my view, role played ideal. Does he assist the McGovern problem this week?
  • Ideal 8
Travis Varcoe used his skill well on Friday. Applies pressure and perceived pleasure. Good scoring, instructs players around him. Ran well. Loving what he brought to the table. Does the 1% things constantly. Great deal of love for him.
  • 1%ers 7
Levi Greenwood did the job, kept Martin to not much. Gets involved. Runs and runs. Pig did good. Very tough too in the right way. Did his job. Proficient game. Gets extra point for his Martin work and fair harassment.
  • Proficient 7
Tom Phillips a nice game, not great, but ran all night long which puts stress on his opponents. Was fumble here and there, that relaid turf at the MCG was an issue for players. Still his running is a weapon and if they curtail Steele (as if) this guy is also a running headache. Overall ok game. Extra points for his gut busting run. Also set up some nice play.
  • Running 6
Steele Sidebottom as close to best on ground and a magic game as you'd see. Elite level finals player. Elite runner.
Sets up play, sees the game unfold. Creates. Simply the best finals player of 2018. Yes, one or two cute mistakes but stellar game. 41 touches. Covered most ground in the game. A clinic. Destroyed Richmond. A nine and a half game though I don't give halves.
  • Brilliant 9
Josh Thomas involved in a few things, relatively quiet game. He'll be up again. Did help create a few scoring opportunities. Quiet overall.
  • Quiet 4
Jack Crisp mega first half. Help set up the whole game. Forget steal knives this guy is now in AA squad discussion. Just a clinic in first half. Continued all night and topped it off with two goals.
  • Magnificent 9
Will Hoskin-Elliott quieter but watching replay twice was just ok overall. Just didn't nail his chances. Watching live thought a 4, watching replays a 5, but his missed opportunities dropped him a point. Still gets into position. Does help set up. Missed opportunities. Lesser game.
  • Average 4
Jaidyn Stephenson in and out of play, did some smart things like running over the boundary line, created headache with his pace but overall just a game. Got a consolation goal for his at times unseen hard work. Has a buzz when getting to the ball. Just an ok pass.
  • Passing 5
Brayden Sier gets 20 possessions or thereabouts, obviously managed for time. Just continues with smart passing and vision. Fantastic slick handball to Treloar releasing him. His kicking to space and position, has depth and according to instructions. A few mistakes but watching him closely gee he is one smart dude. Doesn't get disposssed either. Good solid unobtrusive game. Watch the replay and his set ups. One or two more set ups he'd be a 7.
  • Unobtrusive 6
Brayden Maynard good solid game, did what he needed to do. Helped stifle any run from the opposition.
  • Supporting 6
Jeremy Howe did the Martin business, controlled the air, very high contributor in importance. Leg sore is a concern but will be right. Leads at the back too. Been a huge inclusion back for us.
  • Contributing 7
Brody Mihocek another solid game, rolling through forwards, takes marks, makes contests; did all that on Friday. Good solid game. Not special but does the forward play and kick goals. Been an incredible get this season.
  • Forwarding 6
Mason Cox easily his best ever game. Set the game up for us, dominated contested marking. Destroyed their vaunted defence. Dominant in the heat of battle early; steadied up in the tiger surge early fourth quarter. Was a difference maker. Only player better than Steele. Tallest player ever in the AFL, played his biggest ever game. Nine and a half and then some. Best on ground for his full contribution both at the start and then the finish.

That is why I gave him a vote, does the unspectacular things was very important in our win.

Scott Pendlebury a game of a general, outstanding setting up the win in the first quarter particularly. Directs traffic if you watch carefully. The most under rated star in the game. Cut Richmond up so many ways.

That’s why you’re such a great poster.*

Scott was close to my votes, very.
Watching him live you see him directing as a general.

* and a favourite of mine

Good writeup Saintly, but I reckon you’re a harsh judge! :)

If we say 5 is the pass mark and below that players should be dropped, I don’t think any of our players would fall into that category.

Lowest mark I’d give would be ...

6: WHE (average game for him), JT (Did OK), Stephenson (Still learning)

7: Mihocek (Solid without dominating. Played a great team game), Sier (Coming among well - could have done more of the team thing on occasions by tapping the ball to advantage rather than trying to take possession), Philips (Solid game, ran and ran and ran ... his performance isn’t that far behind our other wingman), Mayne (best game for the club by the length of the Nullabour), Varcoe (brings a maturity. Great bursts), Goldsack (coming back well)

8: Pendlebury (did a bit of shape shifting, good captian’s knock, up on his previous few weeks and needed to be, but down on his best), DeGoey (Solid, but missed a few he could have kicked), Howe (Gee I hope he’s fine, would have rated higher if he played a complete game), Grundy (Solid), Treloar (Makes a huge difference to our team)

9: Greenwood (epic, I think his best game for CFC), Langdon (greater interceptor) and Maynard (fast becoming elite), Crisp (ditto), Adams (Hard at it)

10: Sidebottom, Cox (Couldn’t expect much more from either. Both were short of perfect at times but footy games don’t get much better)

Very good OP Saintly. Except for your grading of 'unobtrusive' for the Bear.

Unobtrusive? UNOBTRUSIVE? UNOBTRUSIVE?

Please go outside and self-flagellate with one of these until you come to your senses:

In ways you have made fair call; but to me 4 isn't a fail as such (this is not a school test after all) it's more a quiet game. Sometimes that happens, it's not a game where you must be dropped it's just a quiet game. Eg Josh Thomas, he created some chances he did some good things but suggest was a quiet day. But not remotely a bad game.
Hyphen provably dropped a point from he for his fumble parts like some tough marking chances. Quieter game. The week before I raved about his game (in my view it was epic).

So don't take 4 as fail. Not in my book anyway.

  • Not one player on Friday played a game that said "time to be dropped. "
  • Also my markings were after watching live and now full replay twice.
  • Mainly this was done for discussion points.

Great write up thanks

Thought Mihocek was fantastic actually
On reflection I have been a tad harsh on him, he plays his role so well, so disciplined.
And he's cold and calculating when he has to be. (Gary Ayres deserves credit for Brody too, schooled him well in the VFL.)

Cox, Grundy Sidey.
All 10's.
They were the big 3 agree.

Have to admit, the idea that 10 votes is nearly never given is a bit silly. It should just mean they had a super star fantastic game.
I should have taken heed. If so I'd think Cox was close to a big 10 as was Steele with big Brodie 9.5.
