Ratten gone?

Spoken by someone who's team is only playing Finals due to getting the softest draw in AFL history and has had the least number of injuries of all 18 clubs..........clever champ.

It is clever because he's spot on. It's the new millennium now, your mob is still living back in 1987.

Actually, I think that's a choice example of when a coach has had to go - what has happened this year demonstrates that the Crows were somewhat squandered potential in the last few years of Craig's tenure.

Wouldnt you throw Freo and Mark Harvey into that category? Because Lyon seems to have extracted so much more out of thay group in such a short period of time to suggest the potential was always there.

I wonder though if someone like Malthouse can extract that much more out Rattens' group without making wholesale changes other than a customary change of game plan as Lyon has done.

Personally, I believe Ratts was hamstrung in a number of areas - namely the clubs suspect recruiting, and their focus on development. Oh and that cultural perception that numbers 3, 4, 5 were THE answer to success; leaving the resultant lack of depth to eventually come back and bite Ratts on the bum.

Carlton have underperformed for the last few years. They have a decent list, good facilities etc, and to lose like they did last weekend was very poor.

Its been approx a decade since Carlton bottomed-out and started a rebuild. They have had a swag of early draft picks in the last 12 years. National draft selections 4, 2, 9, 1, 4, 1, 1, 3, 6, & 9. That alone is comparable to the draft picks for the expansion teams. If we consider that they have had a decade to complement their top draft picks with later draft picks and trades they should be an on-field powerhouse.

Ratten has been coaching Carlton for 6 years with limited success. I can't see enough reasons as to why he deserves more time.

One thing to any new coach - get rid of Judd as your Captain. Poor onfield performances also indicate poor leadership amongst the players. Judds Captaincy has been a complete failure and he seems like he is a poor leader of men.

Have you thought about applying for the top job yourself with that stunning insight?

If the criticism and comments by Robert Walls and Mark Maclure are at all accurate then maybe others at Carlton should be a little worried about their positions:).

Reckon you just might be a little generous with that comment.

Up to a point; I don't think there's any argument that Lyon is a far superior coach, but I think that when an injury list reaches Biblical proportions as Harvey's did last year it's a little less easy to judge.

As for potential, while I rate Freo's list very highly I think one of Lyon's best assets is that he gets maximum value from good ordinary footballers, as Roos did, if not better.

5 seasons.

Ratten's list has had an injury-riddled season as have Essendon's, and theyre not looking at replacing their coaches.

Essendon's is self-inflicted. And if it were happening in the 4th or 5th season of Hird's tenure, yes, yes we would be.

SEN are reporting that the deed is possibly being done at the minute.

Carlton have just rung SEN and denied that there is a Board meeting and Ratts is being sacked. Humphrey and another Borad Member were there but it was on an unrelated matter.

Gavin Brown set to coach the side this week, Ratten furious and has vowed to never return to the club.

If true, a disgraceful act by the Carlton Football Club not to keep their word and wait until the seasons finished.

If I was Ratten, I wouldn't want to coach just to be sacked a few days later.

I feel sorry for Rats cos he seems like a decent bloke. I guess if he has been told he is going to be sacked then I agree maybe he would find his position too untenable to remain. But then again, with one game left for the season maybe it would be an honourable thing for him to have a farewell game since he has coached for 5 years and played over 200 games at the club.

The expectations on this Carlton side is absurd.

They have no All Australian calibre key position players, yet people expected them to be in the top four? Even without the horrid run of injuries, they wouldn't be in over the current four.

Even if they land both MM and Cloke, i don't see why they should be auto top four locks.

I hate Carlton, but i like Ratten.

The treatment he has received from his own club, one in which he is a damn legend at is disgraceful.
