Reporter: "Would Brett Ratten have been sacked if Mick Malthouse wasn't available?"

Silence

Stick: "It's a close one".

Hrmm....so Sticks personal view is that Travis Cloke should stay at Collingwood.....

Cant help but notice the term "the board" littered through the press release - sometimes "the board" should let the footy department do their job... Carlton were between a rock and a hard place on this one. Malthouse would want to deliver success, and pretty quickly too!

I was hoping they'd ask that question

Of course they've approached and confirmed his interest, wouldn't have sacked ratten otherwise considering there isn't much else out there

Really wish they gave Ratten another year, will take a while before I know whether I'm happy about this

imagine how Malthouse's demeanour would be in a similar situation

Malthouse was at Collingwood for 13 years, knew he was leaving for the last three, had a chance to go out with back-to-back premierships, ended up a three time premiership coach with a 16 year drought inbetween, and he still acts like a weird cross between a petulant child and a bitter old man in the media.

he gets that look in his eye, and that snarl on his face - it's Malty against the world.

"They're still my boys, Ed".

When, do you think, should we start digging up the millions of posts by Collingwood supporters indignantly rebutting that Malthouse would ever coach again? I know I told them repeatedly he would definitely 100% coach again, and was roundly savaged for it...

Would be surprised if Ratten isn't an assistant coach somewhere next year.

Hope it's the Tigers. Just for round 1 at least. Imagine the crowd for that?!

Seriously though, really classy exit. Gave the Blues far less stick than they deserved. Mick Malthouse has a bit of blood on his hands here. Generally respect him but he was far from classy in his not-too-subtle comments over the weekend. It's obvious to all its his job now.

Massive pressure on the club next season, an ageing Malthouse in particular.

Classiest exit interview for a sacked coach ever?

Seriously, he could have ripped into them, but he has saved this board some embarrassment.

They will cop a heap, but Ratts has limited it somewhat.

Impressive.

That's what bothers me the most. Malthouse clearly knew the gig was his. And, even if he didn't, a quick private call to Sticks would have made that crystal clear. Instead, he goes on radio, knowing full well that any comment he makes will receive nation-wide attention, and tastelessly says, "If not next year, I won't coach." Very selfish, self-centred behaviour, and typically for Mick, completely opposed to what he earlier said about not putting pressure on Ratts, not dancing on his grave.

That's what mostly annoys me about Malthouse. He thinks he's as pure as driven snow, but he's vindictive, manipulative, self-centred, egotistical, and above all hypocritical. He might be a better coach than Ratts, but Ratten has proven today that he's got him well-covered in the "good bloke" category.

he also left WC in a mess - looks a good coach of a good team but not a manager and developer.

not 100% sure of the carlton list given micks game style

Jeez the new coach is gonna have the weight of the world on their shoulders.
Love Ratts.

unfair. it's not entirely Rattens fault they lost against Gold Coast, it's the people who are actually out on the field playing.

Can never understand the Caro Hate.

Her and Grant Thomas are the only people in football media with honest direct opinions.

Caro was asking direct hard hitting questions during that press conference, thoroughly enjoyed it.
Maybe people want more boy club type questions
