Cheers BRIB, all sounds goods, just wondering if there's any move on managing Judd during the year, will be 28 next year and want him peaking at finals time

Given that "one or two" trades is about all we're ever involved in, do you think "minimal" means none? Or do we think Ratts is just foxing?

Pretty candid interview with Ratts. Not much left to the imagination. Can't see the club proactively seeking trades themselves but will have their ears (big ones at that) open.

Interesting that he mentioned they were initially looking to be more aggressive post-semi loss, but have now reassessed that. Sounds like they've made a few enquiries, were rebuffed and now happy to keep their powder dry.

I think the club clearly values the contribution Curnow made early this year, with the amount of BnF votes he polled in the initial rounds. I'm hoping to see both Curnow and Russell among the midfield rotations next year, both have big, solid bodies.

Just listened to a replay of the interview, and it's pretty obvious we won't be trading Hampson, as we will "training him up as a forward".

Whilst our midfield is quality, he seems pretty intent of improving the depth of our midfield, by that I think means we def need a big bodied inside midfielder.

Really happy we're going to train Hampson up as a forward, I think he could do very well in our forward line. It also gives us three tall options up forward, specifically Kreuzer, Waite and Hampson, which is plenty to work with. No need to give up something significant to get a forward this year. Work with what we have, and if we still need improvement, limited free agency is in next year :thumbsu:

Hampson will be made our big forward for 2012 as he is a tall man mountain and very athletic, needs to keep working on his marking which he improved on this year before he got injured and will be very similar to Tom Hawkins at the Cats (wait and see !) Anything he does not mark will be crumbed up by the road-runners (Betts / Garlett / Walker). We will have a very fast and flexible forward line (Hampson/Waite/Walker as the marking power and the Road Runners as the speed and classy crumbers) that will cause headaches due to unpredictability.

Waite slots back into CHF, and Kruezer with Warnock as the joint ruck duo that will challenge Cox/NicNat as the most flexible combo. Kruezer to go forward when resting from ruck duties or even have both at the square since Kruezer can play like a very tall ruck rover.

I have been waiting for a few years for this moment to arrive, and I can now say we are finally ready to challenge for a flag….

WE ARE READY, WE ARE CARLTON !

Must admit don't know what to make of this Hampson eye surgeon stuff

if the guy hasn't been seeing the proper trajectory of the ball before and now can, 2012 is going to make for one very interesting year :thumbsu:

I'd suggest Hammer would need hand surgery, to implant some glue on the surface of his hands. Should get triggered evertime something like the ball hits it.

Man I should be a surgeon.

What happened too

CARLTON will chase another key forward in this year's trade period after falling agonisingly short in a final for the third-straight season.
The Blues said they would be aggressive in the annual exchange in a bid to add the missing piece of their premiership puzzle after their three-point loss to West Coast.

I know what you mean. He needs it! Thornton's a 100x's a better prospect forward and even he's just a short term fix until the likes of Mitchell develop. But at least he can take a contested mark, very strong one's at that, play the position and kick straight, everything Hammer can't do playing forward. Hampson is a ruckman, a very good ruckman, but that's it. Can't catch a cold up forward. If he could produce a 1/4 of the performance up forward that Thornton did up forward in the EF I'd be surprised.

Why do you doubt Ratten?

People would have said the same thing about Walker last year. They even said it after round one. Stop being such a pessimist that Hampson can't develop as a tall target who can mark, apply defensive pressure, compete and bring the ball to ground. Hampson has the work ethic and physical tools to make it there if he trains hard enough. You don't switch from being a soccer striker at 16 to being drafted as a ruckman at 18 without working hard.

If a 23 year old had kicked six goals four and four in a quarter in a VFL final, we'd want him on our list. Especially after seeing the highlights on Youtube. Yet if Hampson has done that, it's ignored and talked down because it's somehow related to Thornton. A player who used to be a backman. What an argument.

Ratten is doing a great job but everyone is allowed to question and put their own view forward.

If you think about Thornton who has been mentioned, and Walker. Ratten was fine moving them on to another club. Only blind luck saw them stay with the Blues in 2011 and show the form they did.

If Ratten had it his way, we would have been in a lot worse state missing both Walker and Thornton. That just shows you Ratten doesnt know everything, and can be wrong about players sometimes.

Hence people questioning the great galloping giraffe as a key forward. And don't mind me, I think Hampson will get there eventually and give us 1-2 years of what we expected for 8-10.

All i can envision with Hampson is that when the pressure is on, and the game is on the line, the ball will come forward into the square and Hampson all alone will panic as players run at him, letting the ball smack fairly in his face. He just seems to have that element about him when he is not in form.

Ratts had laser eye surgery while playing himself.

I recall an interview in the 90's when he stated he couldnt see more than 20 metres up field when playing!

Walker and THornton have both credited ratten for their new found form this season, so credit where it's due. Ratten's focused more on the man management aspect of footy this year, which has helped bring out the best in our players, and several other players have brought this up in the media.

I'm not saying Ratten's perfect, but this time last year Walker and Thornton were offering us very very little, least of all expecting Walker to finally reach his potential. SOme were even claiming Thornton was past it and couldn't adapt to our new style of play - but how times change in a year. If ratten can bring out even half the improvement Walker and Thornton have shown during the past season, we may very well be there on that one day in october :D
