Ratten issues stern warning
CARLTON coach Brett Ratten has issued a stern warning to all 22 of his players who took to the field in Saturday nights disappointing loss to Fremantle at Gold Coast Stadium, telling them to lift their game or face a lengthy stint on the sideline.

"We spoke in-depth about the game last night, and we'll do so again tomorrow. The guys have been told, you lift your game, or expect to be dropped" Ratten said. "There were too many guys out there last night, who showed no pride in the jumper they were wearing, and i can think of a few of the kids we have in the seconds who are itching to replace them" he said.

Ratten acknowledged the efforts of a few of his players, notably Judd and Murphy, at the same time, denying any injury to spearhead Brendan Fevola, who ended the night with a goal, noting that Fevola played out the game.

"To me it looked like we only had a handful out there tonight who looked interested, Juddy and Murph were sensational i thought, Armfield was great in patches" he said. "We've given the guys enough chances now, we're at round 8, and the axe will come flying down now. You have to work hard for a spot in this team, but these guys are going to need to work a lot harder than tonight"

Carlton face Collingwood at the MCG next Sunday and Ratten has labelled the game season defining. "Next week we have the Pies, probably our most important game of the year. The players will decide for us if we deserve to play finals or not. If we don't bring our A game, we face a big problem at 3 wins, 5 losses" he said.

Ratten conceded that his side could not be considered a finals contender until it won the matches it was expected to. "It doesn't matter where you play or who you play; if you want to take the next step as a team we need to win these games, and we didn't do that."

Same ****ing shit we hear every week, every year. It's all bullshit, we are pretenders, we have 14 players who shouldn't be out there. Time for the supporters to not bury their heads in the sand. The MC will continue to pick the same passengers week in week out. Sick of hearing this shit, ****ing paying us lip service.

While I like Ratts, it is typical coaches spin. He will not be putting 22 players on notice. There are a few that when on song provide the team with some vital ingredients. How long do you tolerate them being off song though?

We have won 1 from our last 5 and are in trouble, despite some close losses.

We can easily finish this year with less wins than last year and then point to about 8 games where we could've, should've, would've ... didn't.

Jamo was well beaten and slow to react when down my goal end last night, Thornton panicked the whole time, Bower was okay but not strong enough. Waite was our standout defender AND our standout forward. Whenever we took him from one spot, Freo dominated in the other.

I came on here during the game and read that Fev was injured. Some guy was ripping into him in the crowd (actually quite funny he was) and I told him that Fev was injured. He asked if that was true? I said yes. He asked if it was his heart. I couldn't really argue there.

Boy, Fev was sullen. Quiet, no energy, frequently sulkily looked into the crowd like he didn't want to be there. Thing was the guy was really just saying 'I'm waiting Brendan' ... 'Time to go Brendan' .... 'show me something Brendan' ... ' provide an option Brendan', not calling him names or anything, so I doubt he was peeved off at the attention. I really thought he was injured and out there to be a decoy such was his lack of involvement.

After I claimed he was injured, he got off the ground to take a mark and get a goal. To the tune of 'There's only one Tony Lockett', we had 'only one possession'. To hear that injury is not a factor annoys me no end.

Thanks to our Qld Supporters the reverse side of the banner read. Lucky the banner said it, because the team didn't.

Guess we'll see on Thursday. 4 changes from last week indicated that we weren't playing the same passengers but when the replacements are kids who've played 17 games between them, doesn't make life easy. It isn't like we've got AFL ready footballers wasting away in the seconds.

Browne deserves a go - AFL ready and is a tough nut. We need Grigg back in. Carrazzo too. Anyone know how far away both are? Hoops has to HTFU because his skills are integral to the side.

For the years of pain and hardship, we're still an inexperienced side. Hurts but that's the truth. Unfortunately some of our more experienced players just aren't good enough to help us take that next step and it's going to take time for the kids to come in to perform consistently at the level.

We can start by getting rid of the "They know we're coming" campaign. Let's win some games that we should be winning and then we can start mouthing off.
Think it is a bit too late for that

Horrible night. I was in a corporate box with a bunch of work colleagues. - Crap seats. Basically behind the goals on a 45 degree angle. Worst box ever! The support for Carlton was excellent. So was the crowd numbers in general. Plenty of people came early to watch the TAC Cup as well, so footy is well and good on the Gold Coast.

Now...

Why the hell can a side like Essendon win with 12 players straight out of High School, or players from overseas that don't even play the sport, and yet, our side that have been together for a few years now, with minimal injuries, can't even take it to cellar-dwellers?

The answer -> .... We have a ****ing assistant coach standard person given the position of head coach. Ratten is shit!!! I've been thinking this ever since we lost to Essendon, when we refused to play man on man, and refused to put a hard tag on Lovett. He is a joke! I ask you all, what exactly is our game-plan? Last night it looked like we were trying that same zoning shit that Essendon made a mockery of on Friday night. Zoning is nothing but an excuse to not man up and not chase.

When Ratten was given his initial contract he admitted that if he couldn't get the side into the finals within his 2 years, then he shouldn't be given a contract extension... And yet we bloody already did it!! I'll give him the rest of the year, but I don't see where this club is going under Ratten. I'm not seeing any direction, no desire, no destiny. There are some absolute gems in that list. If a coach knows what he's doing then we should be dominating.... And yet we have another year of more ****ing crap!

I would strongly suggest to Ratten and his staff to issue a warning to ALL players in regards to alcohol/nightclubs.

I know for a fact that a certain "high profile" player was still in a King St nightspot early into last Sunday morning (Saturday night) when the sun was coming up. I'm all for players having a few drinks to wind down after a match, but this is and should to totally unacceptable during the season.

Here here brother, i was there with em and it was a ****ing disgrace!!!!! so much so i'm going to post a thread about it in a second...disgraceful!!!! Disgraceful performance last night!!

Pretty lame. Ratts has stamped his foot - need more, champ. And does he have to come out with "biggest game of the year" comments every second match? This team needs deflating in terms of expectations and self assessment, not more hype. Trouble.

Coaches are pretty much in a no-win situation after a loss. If they say 'We tried our best', people complain that they are not admitting the team played crap. If they say 'We didn't do good enough, and everyone is on notice', people complain that its a cop out.

I have faith in the team, and what Ratten says to the media is irelevant. All this article tells us is that Ratten is in the same mindset as us supporters. What else do we really want him to say? 'I can't get the players to lift...I am putting myself on notice...the following is the exact game plan we are going to be working on to defeat the pies...ect. ect.'

Thy - I see your point re: 'biggest game'. As it so happens, next week is a pretty damn big game. However, I also do not mind us going into every match with Ratten pumping it up as our biggest game of the year. We should go into matches with that attitude, and we do need to learn to cope with expectations and pressure - we're a big club, it comes with the territory. Clearly our effort doesn't always appear as though we are treating it like the biggest game of the season, but I guess its a work in progress. ;)

I can think of three players that would run through a brick wall to get into the Carlton side at present - Steven Browne, Setanta O'Hailpin and Mitch Robinson. At least with these boys, you know you get an honest performance each week, and they will slog their guts our from siren to siren for you.

And to Ratts, it's great to talk the talk, but can you walk the walk - guess we'll find out on Thursday night. Look what happened to Milne and Dal Santo when they were dropped last year, their club has gone on to bigger and better things. I can think of 2 players that I would drop, so they get the message, and might serve to put a rocket up them. Number 6 and Number 24.
