"But the competition is growing by 15-20 per cent and that playing group won't play together probably ever again because we need change to go forward and succeed and we spoke to the players about that."

Thats a GWS comment right there.

Whos going?

Something is cooking.

Im positive we are up to something.

Something big.

Player to GWS, picks to Carlton, picks ontraded to another club for a 'blue chip' forward.

Sounds like its basically a done deal.

I wonder what player we have in mind?

I think you're reading too much into it Mal.
I agree with Mal... I think that we are losing a couple of players this year to other sides. One to GWS and one possibly to the Shockers and we will be using our picks to get another KPF to fill in the years while Casboult and Mitchell finish off their education.

We might also be working on a trade to the Saints for another quality mid.

I think that we might also be looking at another KPD just to fill in as required.

We have Dylan Buckley coming into the side so the club might be thinking that losing Lucas isnt going to hurt so badly... but I would love to see us retain Lucas as our replacement for Scotland.

This years trade week is going to be very interesting based on Ratts comments.

Yeah, watched it and those comments were pretty clear.

No one that played today is retiring... someone is getting moved on/ leaving.

And he was clearly refering to one of the two new clubs. And talking like whatever it was was already a done deal.

Something is going on behind the scenes methinks.

Isn't it obvious that Gibbs, Kruezer and Waite are obvious ins for our best 22? That means three players from last night have to come out.

Russell has had injury problems but finished 2nd(?) in the 2010 B&F - there's another, fully fit in.

A brave effort last night, but far from our best 22 for 2011 and going forwards to premiership glory in 2012!

exactly.

BTW - what is the state of Levi Casboult? Is he any good? - sorry but I don't follow Bullants games. He could be your KPF?
And don't forget Watson will have another preseason under his belt

Apparently Bolt hurt himself pretty bad yesterday?

I think Ratten was frustrated, angry, disappointed, but the intent of what he's saying is.... this is not the best 22 we will go forward with. We will improve on this team. He'd be desperately unlucky to NOT have any of Gibbs, Waite, Kreuzer to pick in any future game.

As much as Ratten wouldn't say it, every single footy follower out there knows Setanta-Thornton isn't a twin towers forward setup to take a team into the top 4. Ideally NEITHER would get a game, behind Waite, Kreuzer, plus either one of our younger KPP prospects OR a trade target. Much kudos to Irish and T-Bird for competing, trying and delivering as best they can. Cannot and will no question their commitment or love of playing in the Navy Blue. They're not all that good, though, really.

PS - Lloydy called it after the game, Jamison-Henderson are pushing towards "elite" KPDs. True, and how tingly does that make you feel? :)

and any credit coming from a known and publically admitted carlton hater, is probably worthy praise.

Bower would have **** all trade value. Get a full pre-season into him, strengthen those quads and calf muscles up and let him go wild.

He was fantastic player for us circa 2008-2010. If he can get on the park he could give us that extra tall we need down back. That would enable Henderson to play forward when necessary.

Keep Bower unless an offer too good to be true is offered.
Agree with the first part of this but Bower was never fantastic. At best he was a serviceable player with an ability to make spectacular but infrequent runs out of the backline. Injuries have (as in many cases) elevated him to legendary status on this board.

Can't see him fitting anywhere into a backline of Jammo, Hendo/Watson, Duigan, Laidler, Yarran and Touhey. The thought of these last 2 (with their disposal skills and run) coming out of a well structured, disciplined backline is salivating.

If Watson comes on then Hendo goes forward which results in Waite, Hendo,Thornton, and in a pinch, Setanta as our tall options. And this does not take Mitchell and McCarthy or resting ruckmen into consideration. Both are very tall and if only one develops we have increased depth.

Our luck with talls this year (add the crucial loss of Gibbs) has been lamentable. **** we had 4 talls against W/C's 8 for half that game last night and still were desperately unlucky to lose on their own dunghill.

Despite last nights heartache we are very close to the pace and only need to continue to tweak.

Not time to throw the baby out with the dishwater, particularly with the age and prospective development of many players such as Davies, Joseph (another whipping boy on this board) and the talls already mentioned.

Having said all that we still may lose a couple of players, Bower, Lucas, Hampson and the rumours still abound about Russell. If any, or all, go we need to squeeze the best possible trades. Personally I'd package them all and give them to the Saints for Goddard who has looked a very unhappy camper this year. 3/8ths of 5/10ths of ****all chance of this happening but it's nice to dream.

I think the comments made by Ratts suggest that the club now concede that even with injuries this list is still just short of a flag and therefore some changes need to be made.

Collingwood needed a ruck (Jolly) and an inside mid (Ball) and they addressed that need. We must now do the same. And if we need to give up something of value to do so then so be it. Tough calls to be made soon I think...

Trading away a Bower or Davies or Setanta is not going to get the job done. We may have to part with some quality if we truly feel we are only a big KPF and quality inside mid away from ultimate success....

Think you'll find that we've been trying to make these calls for 2 years, hence the ill fated MacLean trade.

Rather than making motherhood statements perhaps you could suggest:

a) Who we should seek and;

b) Who we should offer.

I don't see a Jolly wanting to come home or an out of contract, disenchanted, Ball out there because this is how the Pies got those 2, not by being aggressive at the trade table. Remember those 2 players cost them their first round draft pick only. I don't see us being that lucky particularly with GWS and their money and picks circling.

What did Collingwood trade for those two?

Draft picks 14, 30, 46.

But yeah I agree, there is a big list management story about to come out from our end. Likely someone off to GWS, maybe another player on the move elsewhere Bower? Targetting tall forwards. We don't really need our first pick so we may end up trading it to GC or someone similiar for a young tall

I have a hell of a lot of respect for both. I dont think anyone could question the endevour of either of these two blokes. Would really feel for T-Bird in particular. His career at Carlton makes for one hell of a rollercoaster story.

However, i totally agree with you here this is where the main body of improvement needs to come from.

Just one this, he went up for a big pack mark and came down awkwardly on his foot. He was in a fair deal of pain, but was able to somewhat walk on it with the aid of crutches. I don't think it's broken, and it's probably not enough to interupt his pre-season post-Christmas.

I didnt really see his comments as anything but the truth.. With Hampson, Waite, Kreuzer, and Gibbs missing injured, its very unlikely that this 22 will play in a final together again..

If Watson comes on then Carlton would be stupid to change Hendo back tot he forward line. He has shown more as a defender in half a year than he ever did up forward. For once, Carlton could have a sustainable backline. Never thought I'd say that. Waite slots into the forward if he can ever get his body right and we trade hard for a desired KPF. Waite is capable of committing insidious indiscretions but at the end of the day, his intent and attack on the ball is unquestionable. Having his potent aggression, complimented by Robbo's, makes Carlton a better side. And finally, hats off to Robinson. He has been utterly fantastic this year and I rated him as Carlton's best last night. He will never be lauded for his fine disposal, but he has, heart, aggression, and the intent to win the ball and ultimately get it. He is a major asset!

Interesting that Ratten came out and said it the way he did, but he is probably 100% right. Our premiership 22 from last year haven't played together and will never play together again.

Possibly..but more importantly who do we let go??
Isn't it obvious? He's clearly talking about Davies who with the most selfish act in football ultimately cost his team the match. If he didn't give away that bullshit goal we would've won.

O'hAilpin could be another, he tries his heart out but at the end of the day come crunch time he just lacks the polish to finish.

He's gotta learn how to kick and puthis body on the line before he can replace Scotland. The way Heath ran with the flight of the ball in that first quarter and got crunched was extremely courageous and I don't see Lucas doing that. His kicking has been average as well. To be honest I wouldn't care if GWS get Lucas we might get a good pick in return based purely on where we got Lucas in the draft.

Lucas doesn't really remind me of Scotto at all. Heath is much more courageous and much better skilled... I think we're going to miss him more than a lot of people realise.
