where do people think hartlett will be playing this year? has he been training with the forward group? im a west adelaide supporter so saw him as a junior playin up forward and i think that is where he should be playing although a bit disappointed jarrad wont be up there. Also how long till austin is ready? he looks like he has great smarts and will be a great defender??

I'd play Kreuzer at CHB. He has the height and athleticism to play on the lead-up types in Riewoldt etc. Would give him an excellent grounding in the AFL, especially playing in one of the easier positions on the ground, and resisting throwing him to the wolves in the ruck. Koschitzke won the rising star from CHB, he's really a ruckman/forward.

Agree I would like to see him play CHB as well as forward this year.

Im not a Carlton supporter but im pretty excited to watch Carlton this yr. If you can get your backline settled in the first few rounds, who knows what you guys can achieve this yr.

A little disappointing that we've only got 15,000 members signed up at this stage. I'm hoping that there have been a few sign in late December/ early January, and that these haven't been processed yet.

Everything else though is very positive. Cloke could play CHF, but I would have my doubts as to whether his body could stand up in that position. His shoulder problems would be a concern.

we will bypass CHF as such and push fev and fisher up through that position and the resting ruckman - hampson, kruez, cloke, ackland whoever will position themselves in the square and try and utilise their height advantage - remember fev is a great kick outside 50 for goal so he can start his leads further up the ground away from goal.

As was suggested i think we will use smaller leading flankers - wiggins, russell etc to be lead up targets across the F50 too.

Waite will have stints up forward ala hunter from the eagles if a spark is needed.

thats how i read the situation anyway - from training reports and reading between the lines of interviews etc

That is actually a very good idea. Fisher, Gibbs and Hoops al playing as HFF getting 5-8 marks a week each (Fisher maybe more). Would be very exciting to watch and as you said revolutionary.
I started a similar thread about Gibbs being used in that role last year because he has the smarts and the size to make a fist of it. Russell is another player who will be used as a mobile HFF who pushes up the ground and contributes about five to eight marks a game. Russell has the size and leg speed to push off most defenders when he comes off the bench.

Whilst I agree with BlueYoss that Waite needs to be settled in one position and develop some consistency, his best position is up forward when he have a huge hole at CHF. Saddington has snuck forward in the past in games against Essendon and Collingwood to kick some long goals, but we should be giving game time to Austin, Hartlett and Edwards as forwards ahead of Jason.

i was just thinking the same. with fev being a monster of a kick from outside the arc, is CHF a position these days, with the speed of the game quckening up to a point where CHF needs to be mobile and able to play not only in a genuine CHF Spot but able to roam about the wings.

eg. when i went and watched st.kilda play with my dad (i was bored and they were a sure thing to beat the tigers) riewoldt took most of his marks on or near the wing or the centre of the ground when on a strong lead. his next kick would then be into the forward 50 to the G-train. could this be a way we play with say a fisher/waite leading up the ground then plonking it on fevs chest?

yep !

theres no such thing as a front 6 a mid 6 and a back 6 in modern footy anymore.

its more like 3 forwards - two bigs and a crumber

3 defenders - two bigs and a small defender

and 12 midfielders

so its fev/fish/hartlett/waite/resting ruckman - betts/houlihan/gibbs

thornton/waite/saddington/jamison/ohailpin - armifield/browne/anderson

mids

forget old lingo like CHF and CHB etc

they are gone

Kicking goals from the 50 meter arc is where its at, 5 meters outside 10 in.

This means that gathering the ball on the run from inside the square carry 10 or twenty meters and bang. So when we see players like Judd, Stevens, Murphy banging one in from the 50, we are happy.

The running backs in scotland, waite, hadley, and the wings in simmo and walker can deliver into fev leads to the 50, and fish/gibbs/cloke half forward line set up both of which can be dished off, crumbed to running mids.

Basically last year we were looking to deliver into a forward running out from the goal, the momentum carry the ball away from the goals square aiding the opposition in rebound should the delivery not be effective.

This year we direct our attention to scoring from 40-60 meters out, carry momentum forward at all costs;- aiding running players heading to goal.

Should be highly agile, highly attacking.

The idea of a leading marking forward is a defensive attack, its negative and slow.

HBF - Hopefully some supporters like me are just waiting till mid Jan 08 when our bank accounts recover from the festive season.

BTW - Does anyone know when the Membership Meter will be re-introduced on the CFC website.

Thanks

That's because you're a pessimist and you think players can't improve after three years.
No, that's because I know they're no good and can't carry the club forward. Simple really. No need to get your back up, just stating a fact.

Entertain me if you will, where is Wiggins' improvement going to come from??

While that is technically true, Selwood missed an entire year of footy, so in development terms they would be at a similar level, assuming Selwood's knees hold up.

Hmm, not sure. For 18 year old midfielders there does seem to be a little correlation between physical rdyness. 1 year older means 1 more year in the gym. That is incredibly important when you are going up against hard mature bodies of players who fall into the age bracket 22+. Looking at Selwood's physique, he looked the most primed so long as his knees held up. Not sure he will be number one in 3 years time. Not doubting him at all either (Geelong fans), he could still be the pick of the draft.

Ratten also said

*Hartlett, Cloke or maybe Edwards CHF
*Jamo's put on about 5kg and could play FB along with O'hAlipin and Thorton.
*Murph to play some new roles

That's the interesting one for me.

Did he elaborate on new roles at all?

Wasn't Murph used as a tagger a little bit late in the year under Ratts. Surely that's not how Ratts is planning to use him this year.

You wouldn't think he'd be used as a run with, given he got chopped up in that role. Not sure if it was lack of application due the club having a crap year and/or Murphy not having the endurance.

I'd say maybe he might play a bit on the HFF but I don't think that's anything new. Couldn't see him playing down back with his height.
