RAY Wilson could well be Victoria’s oldest footballer.
Born the year the Olympics came to Melbourne, Wilson celebrates his 61st birthday today.
But on Saturday he was just one of the boys on-field as the Boolarra Demons clashed with Trafalgar in the Mid Gippsland Football League.
Playing against some opponents young enough to be his grandchildren, the footy lover settled into his regular spot on the wing where his teammates reckon he still runs opponents ragged.
The modest veteran works in a bank during the week but lives for the weekend because he loves footy.
His reasoning for putting his body on the line at an age when some are considering retirement is simple.
“It’s good fun and I like to keep fit,” he said.
“I’m not taking speccies or anything but I usually find a way to get a few kicks.”
