That p*ick razor, could you imagine if one of those was paid late in 2010 GF v1.0, there would have been a public hanging! We all enjoyed that GF because the umps let it go. Today we were spent once we hit the lead. Need to get games into Cordy & plan for our ruck division in 2012, Cox got away from Huddo for two match defining marks.

Just watched the rematch of the game tonight, and it was as clear as the freckles on my nose that there was no free kick against Picken.

We didn't lose the game, the umpires stole the game from us.

It would be poetic justice that the West Coast lose to Carlton in the finals, by a poor umpire decision - karma can be a bitch.

I was the same for the Selwood holding the ball that was played in front of goals. Just watching the replay Selwood didn't actually hold it in, young Dalhuis actually had the ball, so how could Selwood be pinged. Disgracefull decision.

The Selwood one you see paid at least twice in every game and I can't believe it is being compared somehow to the Picken free. It is just a case of the Eagles fans justifying the win and to be honest I'd probably do the same in their shoes out of embarrassment.

The Picken one was an absolute shocker, which swung the momentum back the Eagles way to level the scores after the Dogs were on top. I haven't seen a worse, game changing decision in my life. Disgraceful.

He got paid 2 free kicks for it and took a dive at every possible occassion. You can try and justify it all you like when the same thing was happening to Gia who got just the one free kick.

You're just bringing up anything you can to try to justify the howler that ruined and changed the game.

Well...he's just as bad in my opinion. They seem to be teamed togther a lot. Ray thinks the game is all about him. They were woeful two weeks ago also.

By the way, I thought overall the Eagles got an amazing go with the umps, but the 2 incorrect decision one at either end kind of balanced out things in terms of the goals scored from free kicks. So hard to say that it cost us the game, when we made some poor turnovers in the first half.

We had a chance to pull 2 in front in the last, but we tried to be too cute moving the ball into the forward 50. The Eagles at that point were in panic mode and we just needed to get in there to a contest and roll the dice. Young Schofield will hopfully learn a lot from the game.

Umps were once again pretty average, but some of rules are terrible as well...the holding the ball rule needs a lot of work it's pathetic rule.

Regardless of the shtness of the Picken and selwood decisions (I can't believe posters are saying the selwood one was less horrid because it happens more often.. It was still a putrid decision).

The main problem is the over umpiring, and their apparent desire to feel like they're part of the game. The best umps go unnoticed, put their whistle in their pocket and only pay the obvious free kicks. I can't think of a single afl ump that fits into this category. I dont doubt that some of them are capable of it (ray does not fall into this category), but the afl need to step in, dump gieschen (who is simply incompetent) and put someone in place who will simply allow games to flow.

I suspect people would prefer non-decisions over absolute howlers.

The other problem is that there simply aren't enough umpires running around because it's not a professional pursuit. So when you have absolute nuffers like ray making disgusting decisions and a mockery of afl supporters, there is no one to replace him with. One again, it's a task for the afl. Make 30 ump spots professional and I think there'd be an explosion in young ump candidates wanting to have a crack. This would also filter down through to junior and club footy with new umps trying to get experience.

The afl has been caught napping in this regard. Many other sports have professional umps/refs (eg cricket and rugby in Australia). It's time for the afl to catch up. It's the last part of our game to become professional, and this season it is showing

The Picken one was breathtaking in its stupidity, as he was tackled without the ball, tangled with his tackler afterward and nobody in their right minds would have said he was holding the man.

In the previous 40 minutes any decision that could be considered 50/50 was being paid one way.

I nearly fell off my chair when Darling was paid a free as I was sure by that stage the umps had cash on a Bulldogs comeback. At stages they were openly encouraging the Bulldogs players to get into the game.

For instance in the third quarter Priddis had taken a mark and after some time was called to play on. The Bulldog standing the mark just continued to stand there and the umpire called play on another 6 times. It was like the umpire was screaming "Don't just stand there, go and get him".

The problem with Razor is that when he is not in a position to clearly see what is going on he will still pay the decision based on what he thinks has happened. On both occasions IIRC he was actually positioned on the inside of the play, the players had their backs to him. Despite not actually being able to see the infringements he decided that he would pay a free kick based on what it 'looked' like.

IMO that is a bad way to umpire, pay what you actually see not what you make up in your head.

They do that every time someone just stands there... obviously thinking that he hasnt heard him, not that hard to figure out...

I cant believe WC supporters actually think they got bad umpiring, the WHOLE first 3 quarters the umpiring was horrible towards us, everything got paid you way, the 2 west coast supporters I went with were laughing agreeing with me...

Example: Why didnt hall get a free kick when 2 players jumped on his head and didnt get close to the ball 30 meters out directly in front when scores were level with about 5 minutes to go?

21 free kicks to 20. The umpires always continue to yell play on in that instance to ensure that the player standing the mark as well as the kicker hears the call, so it is as much a benefit for the kicker as it is the man on the mark. But if you want to see it as some big conspiracy, go ahead. Gives some insight as to what sought of person you are though and how you treat winning a game.

There is no consistency and often no reward for the playmakers. Yesterday was just another typical day with celebrity umpires trying to boost their personal onscreen time. This is a general comment and not one specifically re the HTB against Selwood but I must be the only fan who thinks this rule is a great one - two reasons:

1. The spirit of the game is to "keep the ball in motion" - it is documented in umpiring coaching manuals. Is diving on or dragging the ball underneath you keeping the ball in motion? I would suggest the players sole aim in doing that is to "kill" the ball, deny possession to the opposition and create a stoppage. It is not skilful diving on the ball, I could do that,and
2. If we allowed players to do that and get away with it, we would have 50 ball ups a game and a horrible spectacle.

Think about it - what is the diver trying to do?
