For those that missed my summary from tonight's VFL match.

Preliminary VFL stats are in, final stats won't be pushed until Monday so expect some changes. A full player table is included below.

Solid match from Footscray tonight with a second-half demolition of 12 goals to 3. Young did not play, but the 3 other emergencies did and played in each of the quarters.

Garcia was easily BOG for mine with 27 disposals (80% efficiency), 8 clearances, 6 score launches and 11 score involvements. His AFL debut can’t be too far away.

Butler was also excellent with 26 disposals, 8 intercepts, 6 marks, 8 score involvement and 1 goal.

West had an up and down game getting 26 disposals, 5 marks inside 50 and kicking 3.3 but his kicking was average at just 40% and gave away 2 sloppy free kicks.

Schache was solid kicking 3.2 (2 goals directly from free kicks) and played a bit in the ruck but I can’t seem him playing seniors again.

Cavarra didn’t score but still had an impact with 13 contested possessions, 7 inside 50s and 8 tackles.

Bedendo has some serious talent and has now kicked 9.2 from 5 VFL games and once he adds a bit of weight I have no doubt he will be playing in the seniors.

Gardner in his first game back was pretty good considering it only went down their 34 times. He finished with 10 disposals (70% effiectny), 10 spoils, 2 hitouts and 2 tackles.

Wallis was pretty quiet only getting 16 touches, 2 clearances and 1 goal.

McComb and Vanderhuevel aren’t listed but showed a lot and I have no doubt will be on an AFL list in the next year.

McComb finished with 24 disposals, 7 clearances, 6 tackles and 2 goals

Vanderhuevel took 3 massive contest marks, 10 hitouts and 1 goal.

I have to say our VFL program is just about the best out of the AFL teams. Consistency in the top 8, 2 premierships and plenty of players going on to play AFL.

Happen to know Butler's disposal efficiency?

Steve is the owner of the best shirt front ever seen!!!!

On Heady I assume.

I saw Bruce Duperouzel, when he was playing for us, I think it was a hit on Darren Morgan from Geelong. Morgan vibrated like a gong in a cartoon when Duper split him right up the middle before he went down.

There’s 3 possibilities here:

1. Young as a late change for Roarke (or someone unknown who didn’t get up after the bruising trip last week). This would work well with the matchups, Mckernan in was probably unexpected and leaves us a little short.

2. However, not sure if this has been said previously somewhere but there’s a big possibility Lipinski will be sub. I think he’s been ‘soft dropped’ and maybe a little sore so they wrote injured instead of omitted. But realistically it’s probably the hope of reduced minutes in case someone gets hurt.

We did this already this year with someone, McNeil I think was managed vs GWS but ended up playing most of the game for Jong.

In this case Young to be held over as a precaution.

3) Young is sub. Surely a 2m tall player wouldn’t be the sub, but it’s Bevo so let’s see!

I quite like the Young in, Lipinski sub theory.

Our backline matches up better with an extra tall down there

I’m not sure of the AFL rules in terms of say ‘Roarke smith late out’, would he not be allowed to be the sub then?

If it’s not Lipinski then I guess Bev likes the flexibility of all players and Young coming on as sub would just need a reshuffle of some other roles. I don’t hate it, we are slightly undersized anyway.

I think we did this early in the season and someone “asked the question”. Brisbane maybe.

The sub needs to come from the 4 emergencies, unless someone drops out altogether. He’s injured, I think it was his thigh that had ice on it after last weeks game.

Young as the sub would be odd as a pure tall, but I could see him coming into the 22 and Rmith being sub

ah yep, just noticed Lipinski wasn’t an emergency. Stupid by me. What’s the severity of his injury then?

The Sub doesn't have to play the position of the injured player though. Young could go back and Dale or Williams could move around for example
Yep, the versatility of players is Bevs favourite thing so it shouldn’t be a problem for us to play a KPP as sub.

Only sounds like a one game injury:

The Bulldogs have lost Easton Wood for 4-6 weeks with a hamstring injury, while Pat Lipinski will miss this week due to a corked thigh.

Rourke sub and Lewy Young in would be a good change, could use the flexibility of one more tall. Him or Cordy could chop out in the ruck or I even think Cordy could be utilised in a defensive/sacrificial forward role to try and create some space for Naughty/Bruce.

The positive of the English and Martin injuries is the ongoing opportunity for Sweet. The club sees Martin as a multi year proposition but there’s nothing to say Sweet can’t edge ahead of him ahead of schedule.

He’s still got work to do but I can see him and English as a very effective duo.

We probably need to make another developing ruckman an off-season priority for support.

Sam Darcy should fill that gap nicely.
