How much do we read into our midfield playing its best without Black? Will we start to see Black resting forward a lot more?

Quite a bit I think. It's a hard one because of how much I love and respect Blacky but it shows that the midfield doesn't need Blacky there to carry them so much anymore (well hopefully). IMO it was one of the most pleasing aspects of yesterdays win (even though I want Blacky to play forever).

Up until the game on the weekend I thought that Blacky was [absolutely] required in the middle for this season and probably even in 2013. Without him I thought that the midfield at its current stage in development could not 'handle it'. Am happy to be proven wrong however. I like your idea of resting Blacky forward a lot more as well.

Fingers crossed the win on the weekend was a sign of things to come on a more consistent basis.

Or do we read into how our midfield performed with Huddo back in the team?

Makes so much difference having a big, bashing ruckman making space for the mids :thumbsu:

Simon Black's mentoring is one of the reasons for the weekends display. Sure he would be proud of the boys. Maybe there is life after Blackie after all.

Whether he is in the team or not it is up to the other midfielders to take control now. I feel he can no doubt still contribute but I don't think he should be the play maker anymore. If he can live with that than all good.

As good as Woey has been, how good would it be to have Blackie coaching the mids. He's clearly already a bit of a player-coach at present.

It's not the first time our midfield has played well without Black. Several times over the last few years, Black has missed the odd game, and our midfield has done well without him.

TBH, i think it's a mental thing, the boys lift because there is no superstar to do it for them.

Some random thoughts on yesterday's win before the site goes down and I forget:
- We got beaten 75 to 29 in the hit outs, but we won the clearances by 1; Hudson himself had 8 clearances and 14 contested possessions;
- Redden had 6 clearances; Rich and Rockliff 5 each. This was probably the best these three have collectively performed against a quality opposition. It is especially important given the abscence and age of Simon Black;
- Our tackling (+21) was back to its best;
- Polkinghorne didn't deserve to be in the team, but he paid the team back some of his debt with a great disply in the last quarter. He along with Green, Drummond and Brown turned the game around when it looked like we were facing a 40+ point thumping. It wasn't just the winning goal, it was multiple efforts. To be fair though, most of the team did some great things in the last quarter.
- Lester with 21 possessions, 13 contested possessions, and 4 clearances in the midfield was a huge suprise packet. I almost choked when I saw him lining up in the middle at the start.
- besides the umpiring the only other negative for the day was the crowd of just 15,500, which was less than what we got against GWS. I know Sunday games kill our crowds for some reason, but Brisbane fans have just seen a couple of good wins in a row. It would be good to see more than the die-hards come out for round 14 in a months time vs. Melbourne.
- 4 and 6 is not bad all things considered. I have looked at our fixture and I think we will probably win 4 more games.
- For two weeks time against Hawthorn I think the INs should be Black for Bewick; Retzlaff for ACorn (?); (and possibly Stiller for McKeever depending on the match-ups)

I think Cornelious should stay in to build his confidence..

..if he keeps getting dropped he could say hooroo and do his best for another club IMO..

I thought he played really well, and would actually like to see the team stay as it was yesterday..for a few weeks anyway..just to see how they play and settle together..

Yeah your first point is why I put a question mark next to it - you can't just keep dropping him all of the time. Although I would really love to reward Retzlaff's efforts in the reserves this year.

I thought ACorn tried hard yesterday, but didn't really influence the game much. 7 possessions in 3 quarters and coming off as the sub tells the tale.

It is 50/50 whether he will keep his spot or not.

Anyone giving us a chance to make it two in a row against BYE this weekend? I think Hammo would've written us off already.

Don't speak too soon.

I'm expecting to see an article from Hammo about how we've got no chance of defeating the Bye, the BYE has a better list than us and how Vossy should be replaced as coach by the BYE

Just watched the last 8 minutes again. The intensity we played at to pull the game out so deep into time-on was premiership quality.

It doesn't mean we are anywhere close to that good, but it does show the level we can get to. The trick is bringing that level of effort almost every week and for almost every quarter (rather than relying on adrenlin / emotion to get you there every now and then).

With Polk's goal at the end, one really interesting thing that someone on here has already pointed out is that Browny was free when he kicked it. I think he was only 10m free (not 20m) but he was free nonetheless. It shows you that fine line between hero and villain, pleasure and pain.

You can't blame Polks for kicking it though. The Grand Final like intensity of those last few minutes meant we were just in full gamble mode. It was high-risk instinct that took over and it paid off. I am not sure many people would have had a clear head to spot Browny on the lead at the end.

Having said that would we be so forgiving if we had lost the game? Thank God it doesn't matter - it just might be the making of Polkinghorne. I really hope so.

Given the length of the quarter, the boys would have been thoroughly convinced that the siren would go at literally any moment. I would say that the torp was an effort to goal in what he probably thought was absolutely no time at all. All very instinctual mind you, so coherent thought processes.

Just watched the replay.

Anthony Hudson gave me "And the Lions Go Back to Back to Back" in 2003, and now he has given me "And the Lions fans say blow the bloody siren!!":thumbsu:

Oh, and after that great win, we went down a position on the ladder. Stuff me if I have never been happier with a slide down the ladder!!

IMO from where he was he would have to get too far under it to get it over the Eagle player, & intercepted. Good call Polks.

He's a great caller. I'm really warming to him. The fact that his head is shaped like Stewie Griffin's hardly bother me at all now.

I also have watched the replay. was FANTASTIC.!!!!!The pleasing thing for me ,apart from our fantastic win ,was the commentary.Despite Ricciutos rather awful voice, I think he is a good and unbiased commentator.Didnt mind the others either.Sounds to me like Roo has a fair bit of respect for Vossy too.How good would it be having him in some sort of role at our club!!!.Was always one of my fave non Lions.could bring such a lot to our young players.
Just my 2 cents worth.
Not sure about this new look Big Footy yet,but will get used to it.

Riccuito will sound fine once he gets through puberty.

stirring win by the boys and hoping they back it up against Hawthorn with the same intensity.

Dunno if anyone else has mentioned this and can't be bothered reading through the past 14 pages but how good is ace's field kicking? He had a quietish game this week goals wise, but his leadup work to the flanks, chase and esp his field kicking has really stuck in my mind. Think there was a few instances against the roos too where he'd mark in wing and switch in-board with a precision 40m pass which ended in goals. Lovin his new attitude and play!

Why did this one have to be the game I couldn't get to? :( I remember the emotions of the 09 EF, but think this would have been even more emotional.

Loved display of sheer guts and determination by the guys for four quarters. The desperation shown during the last few minutes when they all thought the siren would go at any second was fabulous. I agree, that is prob why Polks went for the torp when he did.

Thought the commentary was the best I've heard in a long time too. Loved the siren comment too, especially as I know I would have been calling for it myself :)

09 was still bettter, but this was pretty sweet, better than the win over the Pies in 2010 IMO.

Can we put in a toast for Redden for being a tough nut. Basically because he isn't a pussy, Waters only got 1 week.

Had he been a skirt and stayed down and played up the hit, the MRP would have done Waters for 3 or 4.

Paul Duffield on the other hand.....

That is a solid point. We are all very proud of Reddo for acts of courage and toughness like that every week.
