We could double team Franklin. McKeever to go shoulder-to-shoulder, Maguire plugs the hole in front. Patfull on Roughead.

If Hawthorn play David Hale up front also, they'll have 3 key forwards on occasions.

More important than having a player on Franklin is having someone between Franklin and the goals at all times.

I'd like to see Merrett head down back and play on him. Maguire can go to Roughy or Hale and Patfull can play on Breust or Gunston.

We have just beaten the ladder leaders....I consider them far more of a danger than Buddy and his mob, yet we won.....let the boys just go out there and do what they did to WC...they are good enough!..leave the team as was, play the same tackling ferocious game, and we are in it with a big chance!

Last couple of games Hale has played exclusively as a ruckman, but if he did get a run up forward, it's likely that Roughhead would be rucking, so without Gunston it's unlikely the Hawks would ever have 3 key forwards up there.

I agree with you and jackess that it's important to block up the space that Buddy and Roughy would lead into, but whoever does that shouldn't be a pure defender. Drummond or Lester would be the first-choice candidates, I think.

I think Drummo needs to be the loose in Defence again, his ball use and movement is elite. However, I think this might be the game where they bring Rog back to man up on Buddy, the only problem with this is if he has a run in the midfield, who would we put on him? Adcock? Adcock showed last week he isn't afraid to tackle the big boys and it would be a huge boost if Buddy went into the midfield and Adcock laid a massive tackle on him, just to show him that hes there and isn't going to mess around.

In regards to the West Coast game, I said to my mate that they hadn't been this competitive in the tackling pressure all year and it paid off. I got so excited in the final quarter that I think I broke the seat, kept jumping up and down and then rocking back and forth...was a fantastic feeling and well done to the boys for the win.

Probably so.

Yet our on-ball brigade arguably (very arguably!), only started to perform from the point in time when Black was subbed off in the NM game.

I' d really like to see the same midfield/on-ball set-up, start the game against the Hawks with Black either

a) on the bench : or

b) start as a HF flanker.

Let the "new generation" have their head with Black as back up.

While I agree with you, it is worth noting that Voss has been panned when he's tried this previously.

Is it time for Black to start becoming a key forward or even back tbh? Our midfield did look good without him in there for the second half of the North Melbourne game and the entirety of the WCE game. He could do some real damage to the opposition playing out of the forward line or the back line, and if our midfield continues to improve we could be in for something amazing.

Sometimes you just have to throw out the theory and go with what's working.

I would love to see Blacky play up forward, he is just so clever at reading the ball off the pack that he will either score goals or make the right desicion and set up a goal, why not, our mids are functioning...I like the idea of resting mids up forward. Zorko, Black, Rocky, Lester?, Patty K? sounds like a good rotation to me.

I think this game outlines the importance of Golby and McGrath and how important they are structurally to our side. I still get goosebumps from watching the replays :thumbsu:

As much as Vossy said he didn't want it to be all that we hang our hat on for the year, I don't think there's much doubt that as soon as the season's over, this will be seen as the season highlight. Such an enormous win for our young guys, and it's really made a massive difference in the way we're going.

Agree with that but we've had these types of wins before and they haven't necessarily been transformative. If I'm going to have genuine confidence in this side in 2013, I'd like at least one more win against a side ranked higher than us. Doesn't need to be a West Coast type win.

But if we only beat GC, Port and the Dogs on the way home, I will have a sense that there are still too many sides ahead of us developmentally for us to make finals in 2013. St Kilda was a missed opportunity. Richmond is our next big chance (although a 6 day break coming off a trip to WA is beyond ridiculous). Carlton is not unattainable. And I think we've got the home form to trouble Adelaide despite the gulf in class. Win one of those 3 and I'll be bullish about 2013. Lose all of our matches against higher ranked sides and I think that, despite the obvious gains in development this year, we'd remain a bottom 6 side in most people's eyes.

Plus it get everybody off of voss' back. Big shift from negativity to positivity on bigfooty after that win.

The Tippett cup?

IMO game of the year. You KNOW it's a good game when collingwood supporters not only barrack for us but then admit to it.

That's right. Pies supporters getting behind the Lions. Think about that.
