I have been asked by ODN to track our whipping boy Mitch McGovern. Here are my observations:

In the first half he seemed to be under instructions to keep clear of McKay and/or Casboult and whether it was instructions or not but as the ball was coming into the forward line he seemed to retreat back to the goal square a lot (e.g Josh Jenkins) which effectively meant he was running away from the ball.

When he did lead or try and make the play he was no doubt a victim of our poor delivery into the forward.

For example his first quarter read like this

• Lead to the pocket and ball delivered over head and outbodied and outmarked by Melican
• Cunningham fast break under pressure. MCG lead to Cunningham’s left – Cunningham ignored Gov and kicked to CHF to pack of Swans players.
• Fast break through centre from Murphy who kicked to CHF. I think McGovern may have lead initially but then retreated back and ball went to straight to Swans. MCG needed to lead harder and commit to the lead but tried to wait for the ball to come over the back.
• Lead to the pocket to Caz but ball kicked to his feet , Mcg fumble and cleared by Melican.

In the 2nd half the instructions seemed to change and he was playing up the ground more and at least we presenting but ball delivery was still poor and the ball was slippery.

Summary –

In fairness it was a terrible night to be a forward – particularly a third tall given the slippery conditions, the Swans flood and our terrible ball delivery and strategies going into the forward line. This really needs sorting out – it’s poor.

Having Harry, Caz and MCG basically trying to play the same role isn’t working. Harry or Caz are more demanding of the ball and I think McGov is just second guessing himself and trying to not get in the way. He’s a player who needs to get a good run at the ball but at the moment he is just stopping and starting and not sure where to run. Doesn’t help when our ball movement is slow and Swans could flood back. Regularly looked like 10-12 players at the fall of the ball in the hot spot so bigger bodied Harry or Caz more likely to hold ground and mark or it just gets spoiled.

Whilst he didn’t set the world on fire he looked much more dangerous running more freely up the ground in the second half.

Some more negative points – he didn’t hold his ground well against Melican and was outbodied several times. He has very little second efforts but seemed to openly try to do better at this in the second half. Personally, I think he would do well playing up high half forward/wing and being a target for us down the line or when coming of the half back line. He has the creativity to do this.

Playing his type of role you are going to get nights like that where you basically don’t get a look at the ball but in that case he needs to get some more strings to his bow, get fitter and work harder to tackle and create more pressure – in the words of John Kennedy “at least do something !!”.

Thanks for this AndyL. Much appreciated. I think this insight is amazing given I currently only get to see what the TV camera chooses. I have been thinking poorly of Mitch McG but I will have to reconsider now as I think you have outlined a situation that he's playing a role and is perhaps being unfairly judged.

Gov had more sooks for free kicks than direct impacts on the game. At least do effort things, Gov

Papley spent a fair bit if time on ball around the ground, didn't reallt impact there either. Plow made him look worse the second time around

H impacted the contest up the ground in a fashion that hasn't been seen since Charlie was up and about. Has so much more to offer than just a bang up target

Simmo ruled the backline

Newnes did a whole lot of 1%ers to keep the contest alive

Ed Curnow monstered Parker and thrives in a dogfight.

Had sammo 2nd best behind Walsh. Was a very good game but makes me even more frustrated with him. Where has this type of attitude and willingness to play like that been the last 2 months? The gap between his best and worst is way to big for a guy in his 4th season

Funny typically Carlton game, we played well for most of it but couldn't score early. We're always going to be a danger to opposition for coming back for the same reason we are always at risk of giving up a lead, because we are a one paced side, always attacking, always going forward never slowing it up. Liked our ball movement and pressure. Thought we played well without scoring a lot.

Walsh - Was excellent, was everywhere, spent time on the ball but IMO has become a very good wingman.

SPS - One of his best games and while he found space and the Swans failed to physically intimidate him, he played without worrying about and avoiding contact which was the secret to his success. The week before I was cursing him for once again being unable to win or halve a contest. This week he was great. Even won a free by putting his head over the ball and taking contact. Well done SPS. Lets see this continue.

Docherty - Better game from him, has been out of form but the defence was very solid.

Simpson - Truly an amazing player. If everyone played with the intensity and ferocity at the contest we would win the premiership. He's amazing.

Cripps - Better game from Cripps, moved well but playing on an old worn out star of the past may have helped.

Newnes - Found a bit up forward. Not the cleanest player but he's a hard worker and tough.

Curnow - Got in the thick of it as always.

Fisher - Loved his game, great intensity and his attack on the ball and contested stuff is much improved.

Murphy - He's playing well, just missing his shots on goal.

Setterfield - Was involved in a lot and tackled and chased which I love but his ball handling was terrible. Came good later but gee did he fumble badly. It's not his strength and something he needs to keep on top of. Love his effort though.

Weitering - Reliable back there, Not much more to say he's playing well.

Casboult - Found a bit of form after a long run of bad form. He was good.

Williamson - Liked his game, dash, daring and mostly good kicking with some bloopers.

DeKoning - Is close to our number one ruckman. Not sure he is there yet but he's a young man playing some good footy.

Cuningham - Liked seeing him get involved physically and applying some pressure. He did ok.

Martin - Was sensational going into the midfield late in the game.

Plowman - An old fashion defender who did a good old fashion defensive job.

Cottrell - Kicked a good goal but his game was full of mistakes. None of his disposals hit targets apart from his goal and I feel that is why we don't use him. Gets into positions to use but we don't and I feel it's a conscious thing as we know his disposal is poor.

Jones - Was terrific, Center Half Back is his spot.

McKay - He was good. Can tend to lower his efforts when things get too tough but not this game. Just kept at it and kicked his goals.

McGovern - Mostly unsighted. Playing a decoy perhaps? I'm adamant he can't read the play as a forward if this is not the case. Is missing in a lot of his games there. You'd think he'd be able to lead up hard and get on the end of a few up the ground at times. His leading patterns and timing just don't happen.

Owies - First game, was involved a little but he didn't do a great deal. Thought he Showed a bit at times though. Needs game time. Kicks goals in the VFL but probably not in a way which will get him goals at AFL level.

Full credit to Cottrell for seizing an opportunity to help the team like that, but he had 3 disposals at 3/4 time and was running laps of the centre square. He's not alone in names on the chopping block, but I'd like to see us make a professional decision at the selection table.

TDK looked really good at the centre bounce and around the ground and I'm really excited about his performance, but I still want MK on the list next year. It's Pittonet who we should be looking to move on.

Pitt was a timely in for us, and at 24y/o, still has plenty of upside.

But even more exciting, TDK has smashed through the barriers.

Fortunately for us, we hit the ruck jackpot!

And healthy competition is good.

A far cry from Ackland and Chambers (shudder....).

As much as I love Kreuz, his body was beyond cooked. I was really concerned for him last season with the elevated heart rate issue. In such a strenuous game, a problem with the ticker can be fatal. See the unfortunate instances in European football with players essentially dying on the pitch.

That was two years ago, and Marchbank had similar issues.

Then our high performance manager was moved on.
