Without looking it up, I am pretty sure you can run through the protected area (5m zone, not across the mark) if you are following your opponent. The one against Staker was there and blatant. I didn't see the other.

My understanding is that if you are already in the zone then you are given time to clear out, but if you run into the zone from outside the zone then you are in trouble. I have seen a fair few in recent weeks (non Lions games) where a defender has been penalised while following an opponent.

Which would make more sense if there was a penalty to your *own* player entering into the zone otherwise you have things like Gablett running behind to pickup a handball leaving his tagger stuck 5m away helpless to stop you (which of course would never happen) - maybe changing it from a you kick to a ball up would suffice?

If you follow a player directly you're (generally) ok. If you run through to match up on a player you're (generally) ****ed.

16.1.2 Protected Area

The Protected Area is a corridor which extends from 5 metres

either side of the mark to 5 metres either side of, and a 5-metre

radius behind, the Player with the football, as illustrated in

Diagram 2. No Player shall enter and remain in the Protected

Area unless the field Umpire calls “Play On” or the Player is

accompanying or following within 5 metres of their opponent.

Will they appeal decision ?
Guessing we'll have to take the week - looks like it's those bloody footy gods driving the karma bus when they are over .05 again - sure we'll let you get Hanley back after only a week out [was to be 2 to 3] - but the other week will have to be given to..... wheel spins... and lands on #41

Oi! Whose taken my medicine?

Hard to tell what part of Golby's body struck Curren. Was it elbow? Fraser was conspicously vague on this detail.

Looked like one big pushing action to me. Was some push and shove with his order opponent, other bloke comes over and Golby goes to push him but catches him high. He went to ground because he was pushed, wasn't a strike. Just stupid.

Just watching the replay its hard not to think Leigh Fisher was a bit biased.

As much as I don't agree with the MRP's decision, taking the week was the smart thing. Wouldn't want to risk losing him for 2.

Would be like Usman reviewing his nick if we went to an appeal.

I know I am a bit late to this discussion and that Skoob has quoted the rule saying a playing must be following within 5m of his opponent while going into the protected area - however:

- I am pretty sure that one of the little known rule changes at the start of the year was that the 5m gap was reduced to 1m. That is, if you follow your opponent into the protected area you must now be within 1m of the opponent you are following, otherwise it is a 50m penalty.

Now obviously this is ridiculou as umpires could call literally 10-20 50m penalties a match. Instead what you see is an arbitrary approach where suddenly one or two get picked out and the rest are ignored.

Anyway, surely the rule will be reversed at the end of the year.
