You can improve kicking, but you will never turn an average kick into elite

You want elite kicking, draft or trade them in

Same with speed, you can marginally improve it

It's very hard to be a good kick at Carlton. I attend most games and sit behind the goals. We are so stationary across the field, players don't make an effort to spread and present. Our only viable options are a lateral kick to the wing, a risky 20m pass forward or a long bomb down the line.

Walsh and Hollands the two exceptions.

I think our forwards need to do a much better job with their leading rather than just getting in a wrestle. This is the area I thought Kemp as the third tall would help Curnow and McKay. They can make decoy leads for each other which will lessen the defensive load on Curnow and McKay. Hopefully we see that when we get all three playing together.

I’ve never understood why our forwards don’t take their opponent up the ground to make space behind them … our forward line is always congested whilst most times the opposition forward 50 has gaps everywhere …

I agree completely. I always notice the lack of space in our forward 50. But I just think it's because Curnow and McKay don't lead enough at the ball carrier. If they are stationary it's very easy for defences to fill up those gaps around them.

You often read stuff on sports forums like, “If you think you can do better, then you coach.”. I have genuinely read more smarter suggestions than our game plan/style. So yes, I think there are plenty of people on this forum who could out-coach our coaches.

Since Rd 17 last year we had scored over 100 points ONCE. That was against Nth Melb and we have Two Coleman Medallists and a midfield that can win a lot of ball.

It's a shame that the loss was in the context of the Richmond disaster, because the pressure by both teams was off the scale, free kicks not paid, 50's not paid and ridiculous ones paid, multiple missed shots at crucial times, rub of the green...only round two

I think we're terrified of shallow one v ones inside F50 because the opposition will tear us apart on the rebound.

Numbers around the footy, repeat stoppages, use our "contest and pressure" to inch the footy forward.

I agree witht his. I think we went in with a hack-kick mentality to keep the ball moving. It was working for most of the second and third. Bad kicking and some horrible frees.... but put that aside, it felt like a plan that was working without our 2 lynchpins (fit / firing).

That being said its a loss after another loss. Cripps is trying to do too much a la 2022/2023 and our midfield spread is poor.

Can I just throw up this little glimmer of hope and believe it’s a very faint glimmer - given we got reamed on the TDK long goal decision, the Motlop goal decision and we probably should have kicked perhaps two of the three shots on goals in the third quarter and Charlie played pretty badly - we only lost by 20 points - are things really so bad?

I've been in the room with (and worked for) a Superbowl-winning coach who routinely crowdsourced ideas from "non-experts" as a means of freshening up ideas or gaining a different perspective.

We all watch footy and some of us have done so for many decades. We also have pretty much the same analytical tools at our disposal now that these clowns have. The gap is much smaller between pros and armchair experts than it used to be.

Some players get it and some dont I assume…unless it’s a strict coaching instruction

Maybe. I'm similar to you - been struggling to understand why we play the way we do for 3 years. It's the best explanation I can come up with.

Assuming that the coaches are competent and not complete morons, and assuming the gameplan is built to maximise the strengths of our list and minimise it's weaknesses, it makes some sense.

* Isolate Williams at FF. He's very good one v one in the air and on the ground. Needs a dangerous opponent to mind him, one less to fly third up against Harry/Curnow.

* Kemp up forward. He's terrible one v one, but can launch at the footy. Give him a free run and jump at the footy and he'll mark it more often than not.

* Two of the best KPFs in the game who can (generally) bring the ball or ground or mark it contested. With a fit Williams and decent 3rd talls in Kemp (or SOS), we can isolate them better than we could last season.

Combine that with poor flankers and small forwards, who outside of Motlop aren't good for much more than pressure, and one of the best contested midfields in the competition, and you can start to see the reasoning.

If the stars align, we might end up a better version of 2023. TDK has improved substantially, Cripps is in better form, Cerra looks to be building to his best. Walsh is a currently a shell of the player he was, Newman is a massive loss but we might get him back in the run home. We'll need a fit and firing Eli, and Boyd at his best to inject some skill and class. Smith a big loss.

Hugely vulnerable to injuries to key players and will again probably be our undoing, but can also see why the coaches believe this might be our best bet at impacting if all goes well.

Doesn't explain nor excuse the fumbling, rudimentary mistakes, poor communication. If we can't get the basics right, season is over before it started.


Again, not saying I agree with the approach, but it's the best explanation I've got to why we play the way we do.
