Agree that he is a probably a much better player because he was pushed back to Peel to learn his craft.

You can listen to the guys who said Hughes "looked disinterested" before getting a recall to the AFL if you want.

Personally, I'm going to base my views on the fact that he was travelling emergency 2 weeks ago, and in Peel's best votes in the 2 weeks preceeding that, rather than on wrongologists who fancy themselves body language experts because they happen to live within easy driving distance of Rushton Park.

I watched Hughes twice during Peel preseason. While his defensive game was fine his kicking out the backline was putrid. He was well off his best.

If you campaigners only want to hear rainbow stories about our players that's fine but I remember last year when posters were complaining about the watchers being too positive.

Just take it for what it is, an opinion and stop having a hissy fit about things you don't agree with.

That's great you watched him 15 weeks ago, but like I said, he was traveling emergency for the Carlton game after being BOG for Peel the week before that. The only reason he wasn't emergency again for our last game is that he'd already missed 2 weeks of footy from being emergency and then the bye. Now he's straight back into the team.

So the people saying he was struggling are just wrong, no matter what justification they want to use.

He will be a very well paid player if he stays his career at freo. Havent been this excited about a new player since Fyfes debut.

His last two games for Peel have been good you are right. But I cant see how he has disappointed with his progress overall this year. Really, really want him to make it and definitely havent given up hope, but to say he hasnt met the expectations that most would have had for him this year is a massive understatement by any definition.

As I said there isn't much he can do about not getting picked except keep playing well for Peel, which is what he has been doing. He was very unlucky to be the scapegoat and get dropped after a single game from the Richmond game. Part of that is just our inflexibility of being unwilling to play him in any other positions.

If he keeps playing in the league side and is shit then it's a fair cop, but you can't really blame a guy for not being picked when it's largely outside of his control.

On the sane principle, let's bring Crowden, Duman, Jones, Nyhuis, Grey, Bennell, North and Strnadica in next week. I'm sure the incumbents will be happy to drop back to Peel. If not, we can ask for special dispensation to play extra players, as that's the only way they will improve.

To be fair this is probably his first decent spell this year at Peel. The games he played before his last selection for Richmond were pretty bad. Coupled with the fact that he then performed terribly in that game I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be happy with himself with his efforts this year.

There is a level of absurdity that is required to constantly make out that selection is outside a players control when in season 2018 a handful of good games at WAFL level gets you in the Freo team unless your name is Danyle Pearce. The irony is the Hughes selection proves you only have to play two good games in a row and you are in the team. Hughes hasn't been performing well at WAFL level by any stretch in 2018 so he certainly hasn't been able to 'keep playing well' as you suggest. It is good to see he has turned the corner in recent weeks and hopefully he reminds people of how promising he looked only last year on the weekend.

I actually agree that Hughes should be tried in other positions. Would love to see him spend time on a wing.
 
Pleasant changes. Would've liked Sherro gone, but hey still better then nothing.

Personally, Hughes should be given a chance on the wing/around stoppages. He's such a big body, and has the snarts about it. Feel like he ll be back up defender anyway.. don't want to change players much..

The irony is that the same rules only applies to whomever you are. Definitely didn't to Taberner last year.

Applies to everyone this year bar Danyle Pearce. Took Girro two good games, Crowden played a handful, Sheridsn, Tucker. Pretty much everyone.
 
I would have liked to have seen Bennell for this. I know he's expected to play a full game or 2 for Peel, but he's already had 6 games there. Seems a bit stifled. I know he had a few injury worries with his calves again and wrist blah blah, but poopsicles.....waiting is not my strong suit.

6 day break for the Peel game.

I thought playing Sat over in Darwin, late kick-off - he'd go alright - not rushed in too haphazardly as maybe a full forward might give us something to cheer about when all else is imploding.

Ahhh well, maybe next week....year :mad:
