Great write up IMS. Only one error I can see. The Bombers have been in the last four grand finals, not three. :p

2006 - Riddell Vs Diggers Rest (Riddell)
2005 - Riddell Vs Romsey (Riddell)
2004 - Riddell Vs Lancefield (Lancefield)
2003 - Romsey Vs Lancefield (Romsey) I believe

Last 3 grand finals.

Harry's Happenings - THE GRAND FINAL EDITION

Well, guys and girls it's that time of the year, the grass is green, the birds are singing and the lines are being painted on the ground. The spud lovers from Lancefield are busy tidying up their oval getting it into pristine condition to host the biggest day on the RDFL calendar.

Riddell are there again and Lancefield Park is starting to become a home ground for the Bombers. The Hawks will also be in attendance, but who will walk away with the coveted silverware?

Here's my run down:

Riddell

By far the best performed side in the RDFL. They are well coached, highly skilled and very committed to each other. This is in fact the most basic recipe for success in our game. If you are one of the three things I just mentioned without either of the other two, success will elude you. It has been the base of what has delivered the boys from Bomber land the last 2 flags and will nring them another if they can hold their nerve.

The key players, Belleville, J. Allen, Wadden, Burnett and Blade. These five blokes would walk into nearly any side in most other leagues and all have the ability to have a massive impact on the game.

We've all seen Belleville rack up 30 plus possessions and tear the opposition apart with his use of the footy. Blade does the same thing with out being noticed as much due to the dreadlocks, however if the sun is out you will see a distinctive shine coming off his noggan. My tip to Giddings is try your best to nulify these two out of the middle. This will in turn slow up the scoring ability of the Riddell forward line. The upforward the Bombers have an abundance of talent just queing up to kick the goals, if it's not M. Allen, it's Petran, if it's not Petran is Wadden or Bomber or Nathan Allen. The Bombers are very solid in defence as well, being led by their skipper Jason Allen. He leads the way with massive rive from off half back and sends the Bomber into attack very quickly. This is where they hurt you. While your mid-fielders are busy pushing the ball into your foward line the Riddell mid-fielders back their team mates to wint he contested footy. The defence then runs the ball on the counter attack and your mid-fielders are left behind the ball with their prongs in their hands.

Riddell are beatable, the only thing is, you need to beat them across every line to do it. Some sides can be beaten by just shuting down their mid-field or exploiting their defence, not Riddell, they have genuine talent across the ground and rarely get beaten everywhere.

Woodend

Sipthorpe. Johnstone. Cunick. Those three names will have the biggest jobs ahead of them this Sunday. Sipthorpe will be made accountable, Johnstone will need to tag Belleville and Cunick will be relied upon to create something across the half forward line. While the Hawks have the talent when on song, it will their very best all over the ground. Salpietro has been fantastic this final series, however up the other end is the bloke who makes crumming, roving and kicking goals out of his sherrif's badge look like it's just another day. Wadden. If the Hawks are going to win, Salpietro needs to have another huge game. He will need to get to the drop of everything that is sent towards Darko and Barker. Teamed up with Dowling 8 times out of 10 these guys will get the job done. I hope Sunday isn't one of the other 2 times.

Ninga plays the same role as Jason Allen, massive amounts of drive off of half back. He will need trust his team mates to beat their opponents so he can crumb and rove, thus allowing him to run and carry the ball. When he runs and carries, the Hawks score quickly. The lack of a 1st rate ruckman will hurt the Hawks. While Stevens is serviceable, he isn't a Matt Stacey or Ryan Connellan or Mick Burnett. Podbury, Hannet, Sipthorpe, do yourselves a favour and rove to your opposition ruckman. Do that and back your slelves to beat your direct opponent. This is the only way you will win the ball from the guts. Sam Bowen will also need to step right up, he has all of the ability in the world yet doesn't hurt opposition sides any where near enough. Not bagging him in anyway, I just think he has more ability than what I've seen him display (then again he does normally play on me:D). If Bowen can get himself into the game early, he has the polish to put the score on the board and give the Hawks every chance.

In all gents, ladies, and kids, this year has been an absolute ball tearer. The 2 best sides are in the Grand Final, albeit one of them had to work for it. But then again, nothing is worth having if don't have to work hard for it, especially premierships.

May the best side win and I think they will, Harry's Tip: Riddell by 33 points.

Congrats to all on a fantastic season and I look forward to meeting a few boys from this thread on Sunday.

Good luck to all those pulling them on for the final time this year, especially the Romsey u18's. They have fought really hard to get back to where they knew they could be. Best of luck boys.

ill tip the Hawks in an upset - it is after all, a Grand Final. Riddell were best side in it in 04 when the Tigers finally got the flag that eluded them the previous two years....on Grand Final day the past means nothing - here to a big one and good luck to all sides on Sunday

but more importantly - Go Storm!!

Thanks Omni, You can bet when 2008 comes around, right about end of Feb, is when all and sundry will be back on line to start turning the rumor mill. I for one will be a lot more involved in all areas of footy next year and hope to possibly bring some more opinions and heresay to the metaphorical table next year. It's been a great buzz reading the too-ing and fro-ing over this thread this year and although I joined up late, I have had a blast. There is still a another week or two of posting before this thread is laid to rest.

I'll round up Pickles on Sunday and get him to point me in your direction so we can share an ale. I know you'll have your eyes firmly fixed upon the wide open spaces of Lancefield Park, but I'm sure we may be able to sneak one in. :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Interesting stat! ... over double interest this season by all you media junkies! double up again for 2008 :):thumbsu:

I believe that there were 3 reports from todays game. Heath Wadden was one in the first quarter, and I believe Leigh Coles was one. I'm not sure of the third.

Well done to Woodend-Hesket in the 1's and 18's, and Sunbury in the 2's on their premierships.

wadden would have been reported twice.

well done to woodend, 10 mins into the last quarter of the semi final they were gone against romsey, to come back and beat romsey, sunbury and riddell to claim the flag is a massive effort, hats off to giddings and co.

great season in the RDFL 07!! :thumbsu:

Fantastic effort by Woodend, they needed to break a 17 game winning streak and they did, I didn't think they could do it but they showed me up, well done!!

Riddell coach at 3/4 time had this to say:

"Good sides win premierships, great sides win back to back and champion sides win three in a row".

I guess they're not the champion side they thought they were.

Tool of the Week goes to Heath Wadden. Before his first indiscretion in the 2nd quarter he was probably leading the way for the BOG medal. Special mention to number 36 for Woodend, to his credit he got under Wadden's skin and pestered him until he snapped. A great job for his team.

Wadden and Leigh coles should hang their heads in shame as Riddell weren't truely beaten until they decided to start throwing punches. After that Riddell were never going to be a chance.

Great job by Sipthorpe, Digger and Cuinik, all had a big impact on the game throughout the day.

Congratulations also go to Sunbury in the 2nds, to be down by 8 goals and to kick the next 10 to win the game was seriously awesome to watch. Hold your heads high boys, you never stopped beliveing you could do it and to the victor go the spoils. Winners are grinners and the losers can please themselves.

Commiserations go to the Romsey 18's and B grade netballers. Both had a big job ahead of them and gave a good account of themselves.

who was awarded the 3 medals for BOG on the ground in all 3 grades

Hartnett from Woodend in the 1's and Brenton Sutherland from the Kangaroos in the 2's. Both had excellent games. Brenton especially, U/18 coming to play reserves and getting belted in every ruck contest yet gave his team first use of the ball on every bounce in the 2nd half. Would have set up all the goals except for the fact that he kicked one himself.
Well done to the woodend guys in the seniors as well!!! Terrific season, however a rather diappointing end to the match in relation to Riddell!!!
