Unfortunately its a little late. But Mike has been a busy boy.

Mike’s mid year report

Woodend/Hesket:
The Hawks were the big movers when recruiting over the off season signing Daniel Sipthorp, Daniel Salpietro from Gisborne along with several other players from amateur clubs. With a side that had already made the Preliminary final last year and were only just beaten. Sam Bowen returned from a stint with the Bendigo Bombers and players such as Nick Hannett were looking forward to an injury free season. The loss of Michael Lacy hurt but the Hawks had Jimmy Forrest and Darko Dabrovsak step up in place of these key forwards, the recent return of Luke Barker will also add to the Hawks firepower. Livewire forward Paul Podbury has had an outstanding start to the season and along with Rick Dowling and Salpietro have created headaches for opposition backlines. The Hawks come into the halfway mark with only 1 loss to its name and with Kar Weng Ng finally returning from overseas and Sipthorp finally getting on the ground. The Hawks are just about the best-balanced side in the competition and are well led by Coach Mick Giddings and skipper Adam Johnstone.
Predicted finish: 1st
Predicted B&F: Paul Podbury

Riddell:
The reigning premiers from the last 2 seasons have had a superb 1st half of the season, continuing on from last years success after losing spearhead Lee James. The Bombers recruited very well in the off season with Michael Allen returning to join the Bombers and become the league’s leading goal kicker after 9 rounds. With Heath Wadden and youngsters James Climas and James Petran also getting plenty of the ball up forward. Nathan Allen has also joined the Bombers this year and has become another crucial cog to the Bomber midfield. When joined with Aaron Blade, Tim McDonald, Justin Bellville and another recruit in Leigh Coles, the Bomber midfield is a formidable force. Skipper Jason Allen, has again led from the front marshalling his troops to be sitting at 8-1 at the half way mark. The Bombers are still the side to beat.
Predicted Finish: 2nd
Predicted B&F: Justin Bellville

Sunbury Kangaroos:
The Roos have recruited well over the off season to be 8-1 after 9 rounds. After being knocked out of the finals in the 2nd week last year the Roos identified the need for another midfield type player. They found young Daniel Bonnici. The 24-year-old has been one of the outstanding players in the competition so far this year and has proved a bonus for the Roos. Overall the Roos are a well-balanced side with other recruits Steve James, Steve Boyd, Nathan Hole, Danny Miskin and Jordan Handicott also adding another dimension to the Roos line up. While players from last year’s side such as Garth and Joeb Ploog, Leigh Sporle, Ash Powell and youngsters Matt Welsh, Daniel Ellery and Jackson Baddeley have stepped up another level. A disappointing result in Round 9 should test this side’s mettle, the next 3 weeks will determine if the Roos are a genuine threat this year.
Predicted Finish: 3rd
Predicted B&F: Daniel Bonnici

Romsey:
The Redbacks lost several key players over the off season and were predicted in wider circles to be drifters this season. Alastair Meldrum, Luke Carroll and Mark Strack all Bowen Medallists departed to new clubs and signs looked glum for new coaches Darren Lingard and Mark Dipietro. The Redbacks were able to lure back ruckman Ryan Connellan and midfielder Luke Edwards as well as recruit the Keenan brothers from Rupertswood and inject some youth into the squad that last year finished 5th. Young Cam Dawson up forward has been a spark and a fit Brydon Morgan has been exceptional, at the halfway mark the Redbacks are sitting 6-3. Midfielder Matthew McClellan is fast becoming one of the premier midfielders in the competition whilst Rock of Gibraltar full back Warren Kairns has been superb. Recruit Justin Binney has also played some great football for the Redbacks as they continue to move up the RDFL ladder. At the moment the Redbacks are still struggling a little up forward but will continue to improve and be a contender come finals time.
Predicted Finish: 4th
Predicted B&F: Matt McClellan

Kilmore:
The Blues have been the big improvers of season 2007 so far. With recruits Dave Cornish and Linton Kemp playing superb football at Full Forward and Half Back respectively and captain Matt Robertson one of the leagues leading players. Currently the Blues hold down 5th spot on the ladder heading into the half way mark. With youngsters such as Kale Ramsdale playing some fantastic football and wise heads such as Adam Goudge, the Blues are well and truly on the right track and Coach Terry Ahern may have the right mix to take the next step. The Blues need to hold on to some of their younger guys and continue to work hard and they will be a threat come the business end of the season.
Predicted Finish: 5th
Predicted B&F: Matt Robertson

Diggers Rest:
The Burra have had a horror start to 2007 with injuries having an impact on at least 5 of their best 8 players. At the halfway mark, the Burra are 1 game out of the five. Ruckman Jeremy Jose and Captain Shaun Sims are just 2 of the players that have been affected by injury. The Burra have recruited ruckman Craig Thompson who has been able to lighten the load in the Ruck, and the Burra will be hoping that the injury curse disappears soon. A fully fit Sims, Jose, Laurie, Heritage and so on makes an extremely dangerous side sitting just outside the five. The positive for the Burra is that they have been able to blood younger players such as Stuart Clarke, John Ryan and Peter Crimmins. The Burra will need more from experienced players such as Chris Payne and Bevan Green as the season wears on, but expect the Burra to bounce back and be a danger side if they can sneak into finals. Especially with players like Dan Reilly, Andrew Page and Andrew Klooster who are doing the job at the moment, being able to fire along side some of the players mentioned above.
Predicted Finish: 6th
Predicted B&F: Andrew Klooster

Lancefield:
The Tigers have a new coach and a new attitude. 21 year old, Chris Collins, returned to the club this year after a couple of season’s at the Bendigo Bombers and has taken the reigns of a club that at one stage looked as though it was heading the wrong way. To Collins credit, he has put the Lancefield FC back on track on field, while the committee has worked hard off field to ensure that the Tigers are once again a force in the RDFL. Club legend Simon Choate is still working away on field and is one of the best leaders going around, his ability to have his teammates follow his lead is exceptional. Add to his experience the talents of Collins, Jay Shewan and youngsters Sam Graham and Nathan Milner and you can clearly see that the Tigers are going places. While they may just fall short of a finals birth this year, you can bet your bottom dollar that the Lancefield Football Club will be pushing all of the top sides right to the brink for the remainder of the year.
Predicted Finish: 7th
Predicted B&F: Sam Graham

Melton Central:
Centrals have had an interesting season so far. New coach Mark Greenshields has a system in place and is standing by his philosophy’s and it is nothing but positive news out of Melton. Again Brian Wheelahan has led from the front with his ball winning ability and general leadership, recruit Kane Bullen has given them drive and Greenshields himself has considerable talent.
The Centrals style of attack at the ball always sees them with a chance of winning the game, so an upset win over one of the top sides is always possible. Ala Lancefield, Centrals are heading in the right direction and will cause headaches as the season goes on.
Predicted Finish: 9th
Predicted B&F: Brian Wheelahan

Macedon FC:
The Cats have had an interesting first half of 2007. With just about the youngest list in the RDFL the Cats have had a great win against Lancefield and then followed up with a disappointing loss to Rockbank. But the Cats can never be written off. They have youthful exuberance and young guns James Wright, Ryan Toholka and Alastair Collins have been fantastic so far. Aaron Christianson has again led the team well with his ability to read the football. Scott Knight was impressive before being injured. The Cats have the right players and the right message, but need to be patient, the kids will take time.
Predicted Finish: 8th
Predicted B&F: Aaron Christianson.

Rockbank:
The Rams have improved this year adding exciting talent such as Luke Walker to the list; Walker is an extremely talented young player and with Matt Krul returning in recent weeks the Rams are beginning to build a base to build a team on. Michael Taylor is a gem in the midfield and with young under 18 players from previous years and this year hanging around the club, the Rams will be able to build a team from the ground up. The key for the Rams is to have some younger players that have left in previous year’s return. The Rams are really not that far away. Look for some of the guys that have played for several years to step up in the second half of the year. Tom Mainey, Rob Shirley and Saxon Woodroffe are just a couple of guys that could be a cornerstone for this proud club. Keep an eye on Nealle Oliver.
Predicted Finish: 10th
Predicted B&F: Michael Taylor

Premiers: Woodend/Hesket
Runners Up: Riddell
League B&F: Matt Robertson
Roughie: Brian Wheelahan

Good stuff Harry... But hold onto this glory.. You will soon be brushed aside for the "Newcomer"... All your hard work will come to nothing... :D

if by necomer you mean Mike Lyon i have to agree IMS very good analysis by Mike and from reading his review he is pretty much spot on which begs the questions who is this Mike Lyon

Great mid-season report Mike, everyone can get mine at the gate of any RDFL clash tomorrow.

I'll post it on centralsport.org on Sunday, want to give RDFL supporters the exclusive at the game.

EDIT: Don't think Luke Carroll won a Bowen though.

Nope I didnt, but good mid year report nonetheless...

But Mike, Matt is correct, Luke Carroll never won a Bowen....

Pickles, just wanting to know who gathered all of the info for the mid year record. I was having a llok at it last night and noticed that the Romsey coach was listed as being Kevin Fitzgerald. Also no mention of Ryan Connellan or Luke Edwards in the team lists, and everyone's numbers were all over the place. I would have thought a glance over some team sheets may have been the best idea to get the info correct.

As a whole, it's a great record. Well done to those involved.:thumbsu:

And by the way, great post Mike. Very accurate. :thumbsu::thumbsu:

I'm not sure exactly but it could be that Romsey committee didn't send in the information, so it had probably had to done by the league. If that is true, poor form from Romsey really.

Can't see why every other club can supply netball and footy team lists. If it is to be a regular thing next year (every round) then all clubs have to support it and supply the correct information.

I agree Matt, however, I don't know the process behind how this gets put together. If the club was to supply the info, then yes, poor form. However, it doesn't take a "Mike Lyon" (genius) to know who the coaches are, surely some form of poetic licence is accepted to change some of the info prior to going to print:confused:

I think it would be great for the footy record to be put out every week and I'm sure all clubs would fully support it. Do you think it would be the same publication across the board and just have the middle pages i.e. team lists specific to the location of where you purchased it, much like the AFL? Whatare your thoughts, anyone?

I like the idea of having an across the board publication each week, only issue for clubs would be cost I suppose.. The question is, is our league big enough to handle its own weekly record yet??
My answer would be that I would hope so....

As a newspaper person, the league could easily run a publication each week.

Now I don't know exact costs, but I'm guessing once the set up is complete, and a template is created, it would cost around $1500 per week to print.

With 5 home games each week, that is just $300 per fortnight for a club. If each club sold 150 at $2, they would make there money back. If clubs could get sponsorship in the record, the price they would pay for the records would be dropped (a guess).

If it isn't there every week, then people won't know to buy it. It would soon become a must read. The RDFL would obviously get its own sponsors to cover the costs of a media officer or such to write for it and run it, so it would not be making a profit from the clubs.

Harry, perhaps not changing some of the player details and coaching staff could be used as a wakeup call to make sure they get the info into the league on time.

That is a very well rounded thought process Pickles, I truley like your style. And yes it could be used as a wake up call, a point well made.

P.S - You still owe me a pot and parma.

Just a heads up on the meaning of next week...

We have several players represented Damien Niki, Danny Miskin, Leigh and Mark McInerney, Stuart and Donald Davis and James House...

NAIDOC WEEK NAIDOC Weekcelebrations are being held around Australia from 8 to 15 July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC, the national theme for 2007 is 50 years: Looking Forward, Looking Blak.

How bout we have a parma and pot at the pub after the Romsey v Kilmore clash?

Also, for those interested, I'm thinking of expanding my horizons in summer, taking a step back from cricket and writing a history book on the RDFL since 1945 (post war). Not set in stone yet, but the last league book is now out of date and I think the Riddell League history should be published before it goes on too longer and we lose key pieces of information.

Footballers recognise
indigenous heritage

by Matt Nicholls

FOOTBALLERS in the Sunbury Kangaroos v Romsey clash this Saturday will form a guard of honour and recognise the history of Australia’s indigenous people.
In a ceremony organised by the Riddell District Football League as part of Naidoc Week, there will be a dancing performance between the reserves and senior match, as well as a blessing of the ground.
Players, coaches and umpires will form a guard of honour to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Naidoc originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’.
This committee was once responsible for organising national activities during Naidoc Week, and its acronym has become the name of the week itself.
The week is celebrated not just in the indigenous community, but also in increasing numbers of government agencies, schools, sports groups, local councils and workplaces.
Sunbury Kangaroos Football Club has a number of indigenous footballers and members, including gun senior players Mark and Leigh McInerney, Damien Niki and Danny Minskin.
A long time Kangaroos player, Niki said he was proud to take part in a ceremony celebrating his culture.
A large crowd is expected to gather at Boardman Reserve in Sunbury on Saturday for the event, which is expected to take part at around 1.50pm.

Proud culture: Sunbury Kangaroos members (from left) Samantha McInerney, Stuart Davis, Donald Davis, Damien Niki, Danny Minskin and Leigh McInerney will celebrate Naidoc Week this Saturday against Romsey. Absent: James House and Mark McInerney.

good idea - as long as it doesn't mean sitting around the house more annoying housemates :thumbsu:

Sounds like a fine plan to me Pickles. By the way, the book sounds like a great idea. It warms my heart to now fully understand that you truley are "the man of league and for the league". Perhaps we could arrange a "Pickles for all seasons" calendar as a fund raising opportunity to fund this fine publication? :D

Estimating printing costs at $500 for printing, and selling two calendars at $10 a piece (my granparents will buy one each), you're looking at losing $480.

Don't sell yourself short Pickles:D I've seen some of the images of the lovely young ladies that have frequented the Pickles Pad in the past, and they are well above par.:thumbsu:

Maybe get a calendar of league personalities? Eric Garwood the boundary ump, Simmo bros. Little Daniel the central ump etc.. could be a good chance for the league to have a laugh at itself.:D

Wish I could pull the ladies like that now. They just aren't the same over in Kilmore. But don't worry Harry, Pickles still has plenty of cards up his sleeve :p
