Hartnett from Woodend in the 1's and Brenton Sutherland from the Kangaroos in the 2's. Both had excellent games. Brenton especially, U/18 coming to play reserves and getting belted in every ruck contest yet gave his team first use of the ball on every bounce in the 2nd half. Would have set up all the goals except for the fact that he kicked one himself.
Well done to the woodend guys in the seniors as well!!! Terrific season, however a rather diappointing end to the match in relation to Riddell!!!

bit disappointing they didnt wait around to watch woodend get their medals...i know it must be tough as hell, but its pretty much the custom for the losing side to pay their respect for that 10 mins or so...

Hey Blues12,
Your head wouldn"t be as sore as the Woodend player who was out cold in the last qtr.
Hope all is ok.I believe the woodend players gave him the cup when he took his ride in the ambo.Great gesture. Also heard that Riddell didnt stick around 4 presentation.I know how hard it was 4 us to sit & watch last year ,but a bit of respect 4 the winners would not hurt.
Well done 2 Kangas ,How the hell they pulled that one out of the bag had me bluffed .Under 18s Premiers & Champions, thats the 4 side to do that in about 6 years Diggers 01, Riddell 05,06,Woodend 07.

hmmmmmm seems the om man28 has been vindicated...again! "powerhouse" and "quietly confident" just a few words i used to describe woodend this year, and was great to see the hawks beat a PATHETIC riddell outfit!

Chokers chokers chokers!

Woodend-Hesket was simply awesome on the day, I don't think it's fair to call Riddell chokers. They played the Hawks twice in the home and away season for one win and a loss.

absolute pleasure taking pickles' hard earned. i knew the hawks were going to win something this year.

Hate to say i told you so but i have spruiked WH all year to anyone who would listen and what make things even sweeter is the nice little earner coming my way from M Nicholls. It could have been so much worse for him if hawks 2's didnt fall over.

pickles was still devasted riddell lost (not for money purposes) but he had a bit of a soft spot for em...chin up mate...always 08 (for the dockers too ;))

wats the word on robbo is he hanging round kilmore ???????????????????????????

Future29, rumours every year that Robbo is leaving. Don't believe it until you see a clearance is lodged. It may depend on who gets the gig at Kilmore. Also, congrats on winning the WRFL Under 19 best and fairest mate. Can you give me a tingle on 0424 784 130?

FH18, well done on your bets, you nearly doubled your money. Well done to everyone else that had a wager too. It was good fun.

Catters, I must say that although I thought and probably wanted Riddell to win yesterday, seeing Woodend-Hesket win was also pleasing. The Bombers had their run and while were probably the best team overall this season, just didn't have things go their way in the final. If Wadden hadn't of been stupid for three seconds they might have won. But Woodend-Hesket also had injuries, although picking Stacey was going to be a risk.

Read my next post boys, especially all you Woodend-Hesket people, I'm sure you'll love it!

Fantastic effort by Woodend, they needed to break a 17 game winning streak and they did, I didn't think they could do it but they showed me up, well done!!

Riddell coach at 3/4 time had this to say:

"Good sides win premierships, great sides win back to back and champion sides win three in a row".

I guess they're not the champion side they thought they were.

Tool of the Week goes to Heath Wadden. Before his first indiscretion in the 2nd quarter he was probably leading the way for the BOG medal. Special mention to number 36 for Woodend, to his credit he got under Wadden's skin and pestered him until he snapped. A great job for his team.

Wadden and Leigh coles should hang their heads in shame as Riddell weren't truely beaten until they decided to start throwing punches. After that Riddell were never going to be a chance.

Great job by Sipthorpe, Digger and Cuinik, all had a big impact on the game throughout the day.

Congratulations also go to Sunbury in the 2nds, to be down by 8 goals and to kick the next 10 to win the game was seriously awesome to watch. Hold your heads high boys, you never stopped beliveing you could do it and to the victor go the spoils. Winners are grinners and the losers can please themselves.

Could'nt agree more Harry, spot on summation !

My whole hearted Congratulations go out to the Woodend boys on a great Victory, well done !

Sorry I did'nt catch up for a beer champ but was to engrossed & concerned with the contest, It'll happen 1 day I am sure of that.

OH how I was wrong.
At the start of the season, halfway through the season, and at the end of the season.
Not picking Woodend-Hesket to make the finals, telling The Free Press readers Riddell would win the premiership, and then picking the Bombers to win the flag by 45 points on the eve of the grand final.
Needless to say, I seriously didn’t rate the Hawks well at all.
Am I alone? No.
There are a few reasons why I didn’t think Woodend-Hesket would be a contender this season, and their grand final performance on Sunday certainly made me eat some humble pie.
I didn’t think they could play on large grounds, thought their midfield might lack a bit of pace, and assumed their forward line would be too inconsistent.
Against Riddell in Sunday’s RDFL grand final, they were the complete opposite.
Woodend-Hesket coach Mick Giddings opted for an open style game, told his pacy onballers to run Riddell ragged, and made plenty of room for their enigmatic forwards.
The Hawks were simply brilliant and stuck to their game plan expertly.
After criticism last week, Luke Barker fired back with four goals to lead Woodend-Hesket to victory.
Veteran midfielder Nick Hannett showed his experience in big games with a best-on-ground performance, his ball use at the stoppages was second to none.
For all Riddell’s brilliance in the home and away season, players failed to fire on Sunday.
Having played just one game in the last 22 days, the Bombers were extremely rusty.
While they kicked the first three goals, there were a number of crucial skill errors throughout the contest that were simply unlike the Riddell we have come to know.
But to Woodend-Hesket’s credit, they were sensational all game.
Bombers coach Darrin Rowsell probably summed it up best at three-quarter-time when he told his players that “good sides win premierships, great sides go back-to-back, but champion sides win three in a row”.
While certainly a great side, Riddell was probably not a champion team this season.
They lacked a tall marking forward option, a flaw which Woodend-Hesket was able to expose.
Is this the end of an era for Riddell? It certainly has the potential to be.
But write them off I shall not, as Woodend-Hesket has proved this year that it is easy to get both long and short term predictions wrong.
I’m happy to have made the mistake -- it goes to show the evenness of the Riddell District Football League and the terrific season ahead of us in 2008.

Commiserations go to the Romsey 18's and B grade netballers. Both had a big job ahead of them and gave a good account of themselves.
Well said Harry

I really feel sorry for the Riddell players who gave 100%.

Heath Wadden cost Riddell the game, to be sent off in a grand final is inexcusable and to do it in such a cowardly manner (round arming someone from behind when they have their head over the ball). It was definitely noticeable in the third quarter when Riddell went back to having 18 on the ground, they started to score quickly…. they just ran out of time with the wind.

Wadden’s stint on the pine didn’t help him, when he came back onto the ground after being sent off in the second he did exactly the same thing in the last quarter (it was the same spot on the ground too) – this time he connected properly and no 21 of Woodend was out cold before he hit the ground (another Riddell player who will remain unnamed until they investigate, kicked no 21 for Woodend in the head whilst he lay unconscious on the ground, I hope the video footage got a clear view), no 21 left the ground in an Ambulance.

Harry, the one thing the Riddell coach missed in his speech about Champion sides is that champion sides, in fact any side worth watching are gracious in defeat, Riddell left for the club rooms before the presentations had even started…….

I was very impressed with Sunbury’s win in the 2’s, to come from behind like they did was very courageous… they should be a very strong side next year if that’s an indication of the clubs moral fibre.

To the victors go the spoils… well done Woodend and Sunbury

Thanks to the posters that have given the Woodend-Hesket players and coach the recoginition they deserve. I'd like to say that we as a Woodend club appreciated the kind words from the Riddell players and supporters (OMNI), particularly Scooter who was gracious in defeat by speaking highly of the way our side performed and at the same time expressing disappointment in what occurred late in the game. Although it was disappointing that Riddell did not stay for the presentation this should not be seen as being indicative of the entire team. It was great to see one of the most popular and respected players in the RDFL, Bomber Besanko in the Hawk rooms expressing his congratulations afterwards.
If it is true that a Riddell player kicked Jimmy Hardwick whilst unconscious then I agree that further action should be taken.
Well done to the Woodend-Hesket club on winning both the U18 and senior premierships in 2007!

Hawks fly high!

FASTER running, better skilled and more determined were all the attributes of a well-oiled Woodend-Hesket outfit on Sunday, as the Hawks steamrolled Riddell to take out the Riddell District Football League premiership
In front of a packed audience at Lancefield Park, Woodend-Hesket were simply too good on the day for the Bombers, winning by a comfortable 24 points.
Most expected the match to be close, but Riddell were certainly hot favourites to win. Kicking the first three goals of the match, all off Heath Wadden’s boot, the Bombers were off to a perfect start.
Woodend-Hesket’s nerves finally settled when full-forward Luke Barker read the ball expertly to mark and goal and open the Hawks’ account.
Riddell responded, but missed opportunities to really inflict damage to their rivals.
Finishing strongly, Darko Dabrovsak and Barker both snared majors before quarter time to trail by just three points at the first break.
A clever Daniel Salpietro snap saw the Hawks hit the lead early in the second term, before skipper Adam Johnstone delivered the ball brilliantly to Dale Ciunik, who converted.
Whoever was supposed to be playing on Johnstone should be extremely disappointed with their efforts, as the fleet-footed captain ran riot between the flanks.
The Bombers fought back through two Michael Allen goals, although their lead was only momentary as Barker kicked his third to give Woodend-Hesket the ascendancy.
With moments to play, Pete Manser extended the Hawks’ lead to 10 points, a due reward for his first half efforts.
Needing a hero, last year’s best on ground performer Dean Besanko proved his desire to win a second Doug McIntyre Medal by kicking the first two goals of the second half, giving the Bombers back the lead.
A fine Ciunik pass to Salpietro saw the Hawks respond, before an arm wrestle began to develop.
For ten minutes, no side could buy a goal.
Eventually Riddell forward Leigh Harrison shook off Warren Else to score a goal, giving his side a three-point lead.
The Hawks responded quickly, but missed a crucial goal in the dying minutes of the term.
A superb set play from the Bombers saw the ball go from end to end quickly to finish in youngster James Petran’s hands, who made no mistake to give Riddell a vital eight-point lead at the final break.
While Woodend-Hesket was trailing, they had the advantage of a four goal wind in the last quarter.
An inspirational speech from both coaches had their troops firing early, but once again Johnstone found space and kicked a telling captain’s goal to suggest that Riddell’s run of premierships was about to end.
There was no stopping the Woodend-Hesket bandwagon. A two-point deficit was soon a 24-point lead as Daniel Sipthorp, Salpietro, Barker and Podbury iced what was the premiership cake.
UGLY INCIDENT
In what was otherwise an enjoyable contest, there were two incidents that reflected poorly on the match, as well as the RDFL.
The second, and most serious clash, occurred on the boundary near Riddell’s half-forward line late in the game.
Woodend-Hesket had all but secured the game, when Heath Wadden collected Hawk defender James Hardwick.
It was a definite free kick and a probable report/suspension.
Hardwick was taken to hospital by ambulance, and in a terrific gesture, his teammates gave him the premiership cup as a “travel buddy”.
The first incident also involved Wadden. The small forward was reported and sent from the ground in the second quarter after striking a Woodend-Hesket opponent.
After Hardwick was stretchered from the ground, play resumed briefly before the final siren sounded to an eruption from Hawk fans.
It was Woodend-Hesket’s first premiership since 2002, and the Hawks celebrated long into the night and well into Monday.
Veteran onballer Nick Hannett was best on ground for the premiers, taking home the Doug McIntyre Medal.
He was a worthy winner and had plenty of support from his teammates, notably Pete Manser (player of the finals series in my opinion), Adam Johnstone, Luke Barker, Daniel Salpietro and Guy Donovan.
For Riddell, Aaron Blade, Jason Allen, Justin Belleville and James Climas were best.
SENIORS
Woodend-Hesket 3.1, 7.5, 8.9, 13.12 (90) d
Riddell 3.4, 5.7, 9.11, 9.12 (66).

Goals (W): L. Barker 4; D. Salpietro 2; P. Podbury, A. Johnstone, P. Manser, D. Dabrovsak, D. Sipthorp, D. Ciunik, G. Donovan.
Best: N. Hannett, Manser, K. Ng, Donovan, Johnstone, Barker.
Goals (R): H. Wadden 3; M. Allen, D. Besanko 2; L. Harrison, J. Petran.
Best: J. Allen, J. Climas, L. Coles, J. Belleville, M. Shaughnessy, M. McDougall.

Good column. Great to see you eat some of that humble pie. I believe one of the Woodend players may have given you your headline over the phone yesterday 'I was wrong'. Any truth to that?

I know we can all throw up if's buts and maybe's, but I just can't help but think that had Romsey beaten Woodend in the second semi final, and let's face it, we should have beaten them, the cup would have been ours. Let's take nothing away from Woodend though, they had to do it the hard way and what a great job they did. Had Romsey have beaten Woodend that day, we, I have no doubt, would have beaten the Roos the following week, but I think Riddell would've beaten us in the GF. Was this one that got away from a couple of sides..... Romsey, Sunbury and Diggers? All had the potential to take it, but the two best sides were there on the day and the best side on the day took home the silverware.

I guess the point I'm tyring to make here, is how even the league was this year. Games could always go either way, even though a few games in the home and away season were blow outs the competition was genuinely close.

Any reports on how young Hardwick is from Woodend? Hope is feelling better today. I rekon he would have had a head ache prior to starting the celebrations, then to get on the gas with the team mates would be a huge effort. Great job.

Jimmy's fine Harry-thanks for your concern. Was out and about having a crack last night. He obviously missed the night of the Granny which was a bit of a shame-but i dont think he'll have too many regrets, and if he does he's got a constant reminder hanging around his neck that things aren’t that bad. So far in the celebrations stakes Guy Donavan (Banga) BOG by a mile-wont publish any of his antics here, but it has been all class, Johnno wasn’t too far behind last night, but slipped up making a crucial error by inviting all the boys back to his place to continue the festivities. Anyone who has been involved in a flag would agree it’s a mistake you only make once, if at all!
I agree Harry, a number of teams had their chances throughout the year and yes your boys were terrific at Kilmore. In the end maybe, just maybe it was that last quarter that gave our blokes the shake up we needed and perhaps was one reason for where we ended up (always hard to know).
It's an exciting prospect for the league over the next few years, if the top teams maintain their form and teams like Lancefield and Kilmore push towards the top five which looks likely at the moment.

–adjective
1.almighty or infinite in power, as God.
2.having very great or unlimited authority or power.

Obviously you have great knowledge and power, given your handle.

I, therefore, find it difficult to comprehend, that one with such infinite power, would not have known or either bothered to check the reason behind the Riddell Officials decided to move the players off the ground before agreeing with comments of other particpants not connected to the Club.

It was not meant as any disrespect to the Woodend team or Club. They are to be congratulated for their success. They played the better football and had the greater desire on the day.

The Riddell players were seated on the ground waiting for the presentation when a potentially volatile incident occured between supporters next to where they were seated.

Given the incidents that occured during the game and the abuse that was also being directed at the players from individuals walking past the huddle. The decsion was made to move the players into the rooms to avoid any further unsightly incidents.

Nothing more.

I have been reading the RDFL thread all year and I have enjoyed and sometimes been bemused by the comments of the participants.
However, I think it proper to check information is correct, before automatically assuming the worse.

That is a load of rubbish Fenner!! I was not far from the incident and no one kicked Jimmy while he was on the ground. As soon as he hit the ground he was out and no one went near or touched him whilst he lay there!!:thumbsdown:
And i have no doubt that footage would show this!!

The incident happened and a few scuffles commenced but to say that someone kicked him while he lay on the ground is complete crap!!
Save these comments for another thread!!

Just wanting 2 hear how an old team mate from another comp fared this year in Steven James, think he played 4 sunbury kangas. Cheers:thumbsu:
