Roos face D-day
NINO BUCCI
Bendigo Advertiser
9/09/2008

BROADFORD Football-Netball Club members will later this month vote on their Bendigo Bank Heathcote District Football League future. A move to the Riddell District Football League is afoot, with the Kangaroos unable to field an under-17 side this year. Local juniors prefer to play in the neighbouring RDFL under-18sfr1/2 competition, and some Broadford members are certain their third team woes will continue unabated while playing in the HDFL.

“We won’t get a side up with under 17s, and that would be two years in a row and that’s what’s killing the club,’’ Broadford president Wayne Fisher said yesterday.

“We’ve already spoken about it, under 18s is what we need and the league just can’t do it.

“But it’s not just that, there are other things involved, supporters are dropping off because of the travel with petrol the way it is and things like that, there’s lots of things involved and we’ll put that all across to the members when they vote on September 24.

“The juniors is just one of the items that will come forward at the AGM.

“We’re still talking about whether life members can vote, it’s stated in the constitution that it’s financial members only, but we’re still working through that.’’HDFL secretary Trevor Arnel was not so dismissive of a revamped junior competition, but said the move would have to be suggested and then backed by the other clubs in the league.

“All we know is that there is a faction that wants to move and there’s one that doesn’t,’’ Arnel said.

“In terms of changing the age group, it’s a big project and it’s mostly the clubs that will make that decision.

“We’ve got a meeting in October, and after that if a submission comes in to change that, clubs will go away and look at that . . . and if they decide to change it then we’d need to go to the Victorian Country Football League.’’Huntly Football-Netball Club president Gavin Rule called for the VCFL to regulate the three junior competitions presently operating in central Victoria, not merely to ensure Broadford’s future in the HDFL but to address worrying retention rates for junior football from under 16s onwards. “I think junior football in Bendigo needs a complete change around and there’s no easy solution.

“They need to agree on something, then make some alterations over a two or three year period to make sure it’s the right way to go, and the focus has to be on retention levels from 16 onwards.

“I’ll stick my neck out and say that if kids want to play A-division football then the club needs to have a senior side.’’North Bendigo president Adam Kinder said his club would also support an overhaul of junior competition, if that’s what was needed to keep Broadford in the league.

“Our point of view is that we think we need Broadford in the competition, and whatever steps the league needs to take to make that happen, we’re behind it,’’ he said.

Other HDFL club presidents were unavailable for comment.

Vote set to decide league change.

North Central Review
Septwmber 9th, 2008

A VOTE at the upcoming Annual General Meeting is set to decide Broadford Football/Netball Club’s future in the HDFL.

In a meeting held at the Harley Hammond Reserve on Thursday evening, the pros and cons of a move back to the RDFL were debated amongst a passionate crowd of around 50 people.

Amongst those present was RDFL General Manager Scott McCartney as well as four other RDFL representatives. Surprisingly, there was no representative from the HDFL after the club decided to decline their attendance at the meeting.

The gathering provoked discussion about an array of issues currently hampering the club, with the primary focus being laid on travel issues, lack of sponsorship and the recent folding of the Under 17’s.

With the RDFL hosting an Under 18 competition it would be hoped that a transfer would solve the problem of the lack of Broadford players in the Under 17 competition.

Currently the club is losing players to other local clubs as player’s graduate from the Broadford Under 16’s in the Seymour District Junior Football/Netball League.

Indications are that the HDFL have no intention of changing their thirds competition from Under 17’s to Under 18’s unless the majority of clubs are in support. However, a league meeting on October 15, where the issue will be discussed, will prove too late for the Roos who will decide which path they take at the AGM on September 24.

Other points that were raised in favour of a move included the fact that it would be $3000-4000 less expensive for the club to compete in the Riddell District Football League in regards to affiliation fees and insurance.

At the very latest the RDFL would need a decision by the club by the end of November, with RDFL General Manager Scott McCartney guaranteeing that the move could go ahead if wanted, despite current RDFL clubs needing to vote.

“I’ve spoken to our clubs and they are in support of it (Broadford Football Club transferring to the RDFL),” said McCartney.

At Thursday’s meeting it was heavily debated as to whom would be able to vote with the contentious issue of whether or not Life Members of the club were entitled to a vote.

Broadford Football Club President Wayne Fisher indicated that life members were not able to vote, however would be given the chance.

“According to the constitution, life members don’t get to vote only financial members do, but if on the night life members turn up then were likely to give them a vote,” he said.

If the move were successful it would be the first time the Broadford Football Club has participated in the RDFL since 1983.

Very interesting to read about the life member thing at Broadford, I would have thought that once a member is given a Life membership that means that no monies would need to change hands and that clubs would in theory cover the costs of memberships for the life of that person.
What are others thoughts on that?

Also Doona, the members would be voting on the change. What would the feeling be around the club if they needed to change colours or jumpers?

Exactly, biggest load of $hit I've ever heard

I doubt they'd be changing colours if this actually gets thru, alternate strip will come into play I'd suggest

I see Scott McCartney was quoted as saying he'd spoken to all of the RDFL clubs and they support it (Broadford going in to the RDFL). Did those clubs go to their members for their view or was it just an opinion of the presidents? Do they need to go to their members?

* Flash News *

In the 5000m at the Paralympics on Monday night there was a shocking pile up / Collision involving 6 competitors (as pictured in todays Herald Sun on page 85). The wash up from the horrible incident will mean the unfortunate 6 will now be confined to Wheelchairs for the rest of their lives !

When we were in the RDFL the last time we coped the same sh-t of the same umpires, whether we are first to the ball or keep our mouths shut.

I was hoping that the said umpires were retired, but unfortunately they are still umpiring with the same bias.

All we can do is out live them]
What seems to be the problem, from were i was standing i couldn't see much through the haze of smoke and the three bald guys with the sun glaring off their heads. But what i could hear was a Wallan side arguing with each other and having a crack at the umps and i was there to watch our U18s. Simo might be getting old but will you take his place and umpire? No you wont because teams like WALLAN,CASTLEMAINE,DARLEY,PORT ADELAIDE and COLLINGWOOD wear black and white and always blame someone else for your lack of discipline.

I don't think Broadford are in position to say what they can and can't wear the swan's would be a great idea we already have kanga's strip so why don't you go with the red and white ?You guys left this league and now you want back in.Maybe a change of colors might be what you need aswell as under 18s a fresh look and a new but old league goodluck:thumbsu:

I think you will find they have spoken to clubs but it has not gone to a vote yet.
also you would find that the league only needs the votes from the clubs. How the clubs get to their decision is up to the individual club. In my opinion, you would float the idea to the members, the committee would take in all reactions, then the committee would have the vote and the Pres would take that to the league.
Or some club Presidents might just make the decision on his/her own.

Under 18 - Buffalo Cup, Kilmore Vs Macedon FC. 9.30am @ Romsey

In the rematch to the Qualifying Final Kilmore take on Macedon FC. The first final was an outstanding advertisment for the RDFL, 2 fantastically talented young sides going goal for goal for 4 quarters.

Kilmore came away with a 4 point win with some questionable umpiring in the 2nd half, but the Blues were simply better on the day, giving them a shot at the 2nd Semi and a Grand Final, but last week they were outplayed by a rampant Riddell side that has left them to face the Cats again this week. The blues will need to get more out of League B&F Dylan Walker as well as Ben Pronk, Rory Tighe and Neil Swann if they are going to be able to get over the Cats.

The Cats had an easy win over Lancefield last week and played some of their best footy for the season. Paul Conversano was outstanding, totally dominated the game and along with Kris Preston changed the game for the Cats. This week both will need a similar performance to get the Cats over the line. They will need plenty of support from Matthew Johnstone and Matthew Goodwin through the middle of the ground and Pete Markworth and Justin and Tom McGregor up forward.

Certain to be a fantastic way to kick off Preliminary Final day and a perfect way to start a day of outstanding football.

RDFL Reserves Preliminary Final - Wallan Vs Riddell, 12PM, Romsey

Wallan were disappointing last week, they had several players that lacked commitment and were quite content being 2nd to the ball all day.. Woodend/Hesket completely exposed the Magpies and they will have to do a tremendous amount of improving if they are to be competitive this week against the Bombers. They have targets capable of affecting a game but last week lost their way attempting to find them.. The Magpies beat Riddell only 3 weeks ago, they will find it very tough to surprise them again.

Riddell are a powerful unit.. It took them a while to get going last week while the week before they were completely outplayed by the Hawks. But when they did get going they were unstoppable. With several players capable of playing senior football at any other club they will be way too strong for Wallan tomorrow. With Leigh Harrison returning it will be even tougher for the Magpies.

Key Matchups - Doesn't matter, this will be a thrashing...

Harrison Hyundai Cup - Riddell Vs Woodend/Hesket, 2.30PM, Romsey

Last years Grand Finalists in the match everyone thought we would see next week, thank you to Diggers Rest who made this Preliminary Final possible.. I have heard the saying "2 GF's in 2 weeks" because whoever wins this will win the flag... Rubbish, unless the winner of this match is Riddell...

The Bombers were totally outpointed last week up at the mud patch that was the Woodend/Hesket football ground.. The Bombers have every right to be upset about the ground dished up to them.. Who am I kidding, they finished on top, were the best side by a long long way and were terrible last week.. More determined to look pretty and link up and run just like any good side would.. Unless that side was playing in a mud pit. Well I am sure everyone under the bridge will be extremely pleased with the 23 degrees and sun that will be dished up tomorrow, ready for the Bombers to hit back with a vengence.. If Riddell cant get up for tomorrow's game they have something very very wrong with them.. Scooter shouldn't even need to prepare, let em rock up and play, they lost to WH last year and made a shambles of themselves last Saturday.. They will coach themselves to a win this week.

The Hawks were impressive last week, when they got on a roll the Kangas just couldn't go with them. Mick Lacy was outstanding and Paul Podbury was everywhere, they are unlucky that this is the Prelim, because I think they could have been a chance if this was a Grand Final... NOT... While the Hawks are an outstanding "team" they just dont have enough fire power to knock off the Bombers.. To do so they need to play one on one all over the ground.. No excuses.. Barker MUST play forward, he and Cross are the only players capable of kicking a bag full. The Riddell backline will pay no respect to the Hawks forwards so they must take every opportunity to score and make the most of it. No tags, just accountable should be the motto of the Hawks. Make it a pressure game, everyone saw how Riddell reacted to pressure last week.

Key Matchups:
Lee James Vs Warren Else - James will kick 8
Sam Young Vs Guy Donovan - Banger Donovan is a goer and will be with Sam all day if that is what the Hawks want, just dont know if he is good enough to stop him. After last week I know he is the best in the comp.
Mark Palmer Vs Sam Bowen - If the Hawks want to carve up the Bombers get the ball to Bowen, could be the only matchup they win all day.
Mick Lacy Vs Jason Allen - Lacy will find plenty of the ball up the field, but the Bombers will let him because they wont have Lacy to kick to up forward. I would start him deep and lets see if the Bombers can stop him inside forward 50.

While Woodend will throw everything at Riddell early, this game will be over before half time.
