As i have said earlier, i am a new comer back to RDFL, i never saw or experienced this type of thing when i was involved with RDFL many years ago, it is such ashame that such senior players in a so called disciplined team, (one being the coach of the reserves) behaved in this manner. There is NO excuse for violence, they are both adult, supposedly mature males??? let's not forget that. Both men, I would suggest are setting very poor examples to the young riddell side. What a pitty that the final series for 2008 will be remember as the year the "two player's jumped the fence to play biffo".

Spot on . He's also a life member at Diggers but I don't think that will have any bearing on the outcome.
 
if the supposed security were doing their job then those blokes who were instigating the biffo would not have been drunk! if they checked the cars properly then they wouldn't have been able to bring in the grog. Romsey would not have served alcohol to drunken louts. So it begs the question... if these players are suspended could they argue that the league did not provide enough security to prevent the situation!? Remembering that the welfare of players and spectators should be the foremost priority of the league and the club running the day!!! I wasn't there but it sounds like it was a situation that could of been prevented. if it was my dad getting belted (as suggested) then i would have done the same and been filthy that he wasn't protected by blokes who are getting $30 or more an hour to do so! I'd be suing the security mob for this one!!! Then again I wasn't there.

ok so if your parents or members of your family were getting punched up by a group of drunken clowns from the oppsition supporters you would just stand there and watch would you? I THINK DON'T. and if you did then you are a d@ckhead. while having this kind of stuff in the rdfl is not good , the league should look upon these 2 cases as 2 blokes sticking up for their family ,which at the end of the day is WAY MORE IMPORTANT THAN PLAYING PADDOCK FOOTBALL.

How about I give you another slant on it ?
Perhaps a more accurate one !

That this year will be remembered for when 2 Stars, One a Bowen Medalist & 3 time century goal kicker decided that it was of more importance to them to stop playing footy, stop winning a Preliminary Final, stop doing what they have trained all year for & rush to the aid of one of their Family members that had been set upon by a mob of drunken violent animals that after beating him to the ground were kicking into him as he lay prostrate there !

These guys are Heroes for what they did and should be commended for it !

It also sounds like one of the senior Riddell boys took the fighting from the ground to the pub that night. My sources tell me that the fight was between a senior goal kicking forward and an under 18s player from the same club!
The club went to some great lengths the next day to smooth things over, sending the senior coach over to the young lads home.
I hope the club can settle down in time for the GF. Big week for the Riddell boys!!

This sort of ill informed crap is exactly why I signed on to this site. You admit that didn't see the incident but then you lay the entire blame the Woodend Hesket FC.
Any impartial observer would tell you that those Woodend supporters were in that position of the ground all day. The other group came later a proceeded to engage in taunts and abuse which stupidly were given back. How is it that it is the fault of the Woodend Hesket FC that the large and seemingly organised group that took up their position right next to the Woodend supporters with the obvious intention of heckling and abuses. Any reasonable person could assume that it was planned and any reasonable person would have forseen the potential for trouble. Add to this, as I've stated before, the obvious level of extreme intoxication by many in that group and probably in the Woodend camp and trouble was inevitable. BUT don't blame the Woodend Hesket FC for this one. Clearly that's not where the trouble started and don't go back to Kilmore. That makes it even more damning because it shows these holligans definitely planned things and even after a full week couldn't cool down and what's Sunbury got to do with Riddell !!!
Let's hope this wasn't planned but that's the way it looks so I find it hard to see how on earth that's the Woodend Hesket FC's fault or even the fault of some of its fans.

Don't know them so I'm not in a position to comment on them. All I know is that anyone involved ought to havee been able to show more restraint than what was shown. In addition to that my point is that your comments are ill informed especially as you admit that you didn't see it. When I went to get some little kids away from the ruccous what I did see was a kid who was the victim of a callous and cowardly act and his father who went to his protection both injured and covered in claret and from all accounts the young bloke was targetted unfairly - they got the wrong bloke!!! Now some of you guys rabbit on about protecting family so what would you expect that big older guy whoever he was to do. Get your facts straight.
 
i am a hawks supporter i was standing right next to this incident. The abuse from the woodend supports was only verbal and at no time turned to physical violence. its just what happens at the footy spectators yell at players over the fence all the time. It wasnt until after the three quarter time huddle that the riddell crowd decided to come around next to the group of woodend supporters. in saying this yes i agree that some of the supporters were far to drunk to be allowed to continue drinking but that didnt mean they were looking for a fight. the riddell supporters confronted the woodend supporters on thier own accord. the riddell supporters threw the first punches and in this happening caused the woodend supporters to defend themselves and thier mates.

so in this i think people need to realise that yes woodend were yelling abuse over the fence, but it was only words wasnt punches, it had nothing to do with the club or any of the woodend players. it was riddell supporters that decided it had to turn to violence. it was riddell supporters that came towards the group of young woodend supporters and started the fight. so to people that werent there and didnt see it i say keep out and stop spreading crap about woodend football club. only because of the actions of some young supporters that yes had had enough to drink at the footy did the riddell surpporters take action and turn to violence.

ITS NOT WOODEND FOOTBALL CLUBS FAULT OR RIDDELL FOOTBALL CLUBS FAULT.
look at the supporters that turn to violence, they are the problem. look at the players that feel the need to leave the ground to be involved in a fight. they are the problem

yes the security was there. spectators heard them saying over thier radios to many involved keep clear. at no time did they intervine not even when the police arrived.
 
what's the point of having security there then?! if they intervened earlier could they have prevented the situation?

I arrived at 9.30am & was there all day, I was parked right next to your Woodend supporters... & I use the term very loosely. They arrived much later.
A number of them were Woodend reserves players. (Fact)
Most of them were drinking. (Fact)
Most of them got blind drunk as the day progressed. (Fact)
Then a number of them became abusive. (Fact)
Many supporters, Like me of a number of different teams near by. (Fact)
The Woodend Supporters actions started the incident........ IMO
They were a disgrace........ IMO
They left a shit load of Rubbish behind, ie Their BYO empties. (Fact)
Now the rest is history !
 
yes i agree, the security at no time approched the car of young supporters during the whole day. at if the rdfl are paying these people to make people feel safe and so people can enjoy the days football they should be doing a much better job.

So the abuse leveled at the players was just harmless footy banter that you get each week at the footy? At no time did the woodend supporters step over the line with what was been yelled out?

Why did these players fathers go from the Riddell supporters area to where the Woodend Supporters were gathered near the goals. I dont know why they would do such a thing ,walking into a hornets nest of drunks.These players should be professional enough not to listen to the clowns and hasbeens over the fence.If the parents had stayed put this would not of happened.
 
I wasn't there and I am very intigued by what happened, but it must be said that family members of any side should be able to watch from anywhere and enjoy the footy and not have to listen to verbal abuse. The parents involved were probably at that end because that is the end their sons were kicking goals at.

i agree yes there was at times abuse yelled out that i would find offencive if i was a player but under the circumstances there was no need to turn to violence. or in the players cases leave the feild.

the parents of the players walked behind the goals to try and stem the flow of abuse from the woodend crowd over the fence and then turned to violence as a way of stopping this. it wasnt to watch there kids play it was to start trouble.
 
its not woodends fault for starting the abuse, its not riddells fault for confronting woodend about it, its not the players fault for jumping the fence, its definately not the leagues fault, its security, security, security! fair to say that they were hired to prevent this and they didnt! safe environment for all... i went to an amatuer grand final two years ago, rocked up in a car with a bunch of blokes and they asked us to get out of the car to check for alcohol. then when we were at one end and the teams supporters started getting vocal, we had about 6 or 8 security people making sure nothing got out of hand. thats the security you want at your games!
