Re: R.d.f.l Thread 2008

Yeah does his research about the teams and players he loves!! I dont argue that he does his research! I thought Matt is the roving reporter of the RDFL? Not the roving reporter for Riddell or Kilmore. I want to hear about the other teams in the RDFL. Macedon, Diggers, Lancefield, Melton, Rockbank... Or are these teams too boring to hear about?

These stories were in last week's paper, but most eyes missed them because of the Cornish story.

Bakers are best

BOOM recruit Adrian Baker excited the Romsey crowd on Saturday, as the livewire forward showed plenty of spark in the Redbacks’ practice match against Jacana.
It was the Baker show, with half-back-flanker Luke Baker also dominating for the home side.
In what was an impressive all-round performance, rumours that Romsey were to be the biggest sliders of 2008 in the Riddell District Football League have since been quashed.
At this stage only two players are confirmed departures from the Redbacks – Brydan Morgan and Paul Brady – and although the pair was instrumental in Romsey’s performances last year, they have been aptly replaced.
Up forward, the experienced Adrian Baker (formerly of Broadford) has the capacity to kick 80 goals in a season, with support likely to come from fellow recruit Clint Wheatley (Wakool).
Wheatley, a brother of AFL star Paul (Demons), played on the wing on Saturday, but is expected to share the key forward duties with Steve Burlak.
Other recruits to the Redbacks include Warren Carton (Tullamarine), Daniel Mitchell (Avenel), Adam Kearney (Wakool), and Bronson Wheatley (Lalor).
Coach Mark Dipietro was playing down his side’s chances after the match.
“We’re just aiming to make finals. We’ve had a few hitouts now to dust off the cobwebs and we’re looking forward to round one,” he said.
Dipietro said that most clubs appear to have recruited well over the summer, and said the competition is likely to be very even once again.
“We don’t know who everyone else has picked up, so it is going to be hard to gauge where we are at. We think we’ll be thereabouts.”

Tigers look solid
LANCEFIELD footballers kicked off their 2008 campaign in style last Saturday, winning their practice match against Newlyn with ease.
In excellent conditions at Lancefield Park, the relatively new-look Tigers were full of running, aided by the ruckwork of new recruit Tom Waters, who dominated the hitouts.
The lanky 21-year-old from Bulleen Templestowe in the VAFA was simply too good for his Newlyn counterparts, and was instrumental in Lancefield kicking six unanswered goals in the opening quarter.
His ability to dominate and ruck all game allows the Tigers to play club stalwart Phil Conway on a wing or in a key position, which effectively means two new recruits for the club.
Midfielders Chris Collins, Simon Choate and Jay Shewan showed their class through the centre, while up forward, Scott Smithwick and recruit John Baker (Romsey) both looked potent in front of goal.
Rick Dowling (Woodend-Hesket) enjoyed his first hit out since the Hawks dropped him on the eve of the finals last year, but appeared rusty.
The small forward kicked 42 goals last season, but was controversially axed from the side for the finals series, with Woodend-Hesket coach Mick Giddings favouring youngster Daniel Salpietro for the pocket role.
In what was a brilliant day for the Lancefield club, all three sides were victorious.
The reserves held off Newlyn in the senior curtain raiser, while the Tigers’ Under 18 side defeated Woodend-Hesket in the morning.
With a handful of senior players still to come into the side, Lancefield’s season appears to be promising.
Although Newlyn, (Central Highlands Football League), are probably not as strong as most of the RDFL sides, it was a great opportunity for the Tigers to dust off the cobwebs and gain some much needed confidence before round one.
They will play Romsey in the season opener, at Romsey on Sunday, April 13.
For a full season preview, see next week’s Free Press.

Obviously living way out in the wild west, you can't get my paper, but you can get on www.centralsport.org on Fridays and see most of my footy articles. I'll be doing some brief previews in the RDFL record each week, and will also be doing an RDFL summary for the Midland Express newspaper, based out of Kyneton. All for the love of it!

Big news up here in Port Douglas. Lee James to play for Port second half of year that is a great pick up and we Look forward to seeing him kick a bag for us. Riddles loss our gain but thats footy.

Re: R.d.f.l Thread 2008

Surely, that is just another rumour this close to the year? Anyway any teams want to share their possible line-ups or players that will make their senior debuts, injuries of players that will miss or suspensions that are carried over from last year?

Good on coach Coxy if true, great get :thumbsu: seems he will be replacing Chippa Douglas who will return to Broadford :D

Matt, how do you work your odds out?

Riddell $1.40 v Woodend-Hesket $2.50

Regardless of who they picked up their can not be a dollar difference between the premiership winners form last year. The odds should be near even.

Wallan $1.04 v Rockbank $6

Odds on this game should be closer as Wallan is a unknown quantity, so how is their a $5 difference. Don't get me wrong they could win by 100 points but you can have that in round 1.

Diggers Rest $1.80 v Sunbury Kangaroos $1.85

A side that missed out on a grand final by 12 points is further out in odds than a side that was eliminated in the first week? Can't work it out. Regardless of pick ups which according to the RDFL website, Diggers have struggled to pick up other than Davis, Sunbury should be favourties.

Matt if your taking peoples money, make sure that the odds aren't your weekly tips, otherwise everything so far in write ups has been spot on

REPLY - Riddell were the best side last year and choked in the big dance. They've added Lee James, Sam Young, Chris Meacham and Mark Power to the side -- all class. Woodend-Hesket may field a similar side. Hawks are good value if you like them.

Wallan $1.04 v Rockbank $6

Odds on this game should be closer as Wallan is a unknown quantity, so how is their a $5 difference. Don't get me wrong they could win by 100 points but you can have that in round 1.

REPLY: Rockbank say they have recruited, but the clearances don't back them up. Wallan will win this game, so if any bookie had them at $1.30+ they would be burnt hard. The Pies have some class forwards and on-ballers and should be too strong.

REPLY: It's a 50-50 game but the home ground advantage has Diggers Rest slightly ahead. The Roos have lost their best midfielder in Bonnici and forward in Garth Ploog. The Burra may just get the points in the middle.

Matt if your taking peoples money, make sure that the odds aren't your weekly tips, otherwise everything so far in write ups has been spot on

REPLY: How do you think bookies work out their odds? They do their own form. Its only "prospective" anyway :D

Re: R.d.f.l Thread 2008

Hey Matt

since you have come up with a potential line up for Riddell for round 1, what about the teams who will compete for the premiership? You're around Kilmore, what about their potential line up? They were the talk of preseason. And Lancefields? They have recruited well. And my real interest is in Woodend? The premiers. Are hannett and darko sticking around or have they definately retired?

I'm not sure about the Hawks. I spoke to Darko a couple of weeks ago in the Gisborne sports bar and he wasn't sure if he was going to play. I'm tipping he might later in the season.

As my paper is encouraging clubs from the area to submit senior teams for the Friday paper, I don't think I'll post them on here just yet.

Re: R.d.f.l Thread 2008

Fair enough. Im sure you've written your best sides for these teams though? Looking forward to friday then...

Cant wait for round 1 back in the rdfl.
My tips for this week i think will be...
Wallan over rockbank
Kilmore by 30pts over melton central
Sunbury by 6pts over diggers rest
Riddell by 50pts over woodend hesket
Romsey by 40pts over lancefield

Are any big names out for rnd 1 for any sides or will most clubs be close to full strength?

Beat's,

Perhaps you could do a write up like Nichols has done for the under 17 squad for Sunday.... How their travelling and where they are at as a sqaud etc;

What one could expect if they went along on Sunday?

Nichols you could help out perhaps.

I've actually got no idea whatsover about what is happening. I know about the game obviously, but haven't seen a team or anything. The timing of the match is very poor in my opinion, but that can't be helped.
